1: Why can't I search for servers in Sauerbraten / AssaultCube

by Adam2091 on 08/16/2008 14:18

Hey.

Since I've been on Vista, I've never installed Cube. Toady I did, and it tells me the master server isn't responding, every time.

I've turned off Windows Firewall, and I've opened the ports through my router it tells me to open in the Wiki, and still nothing.

So why can't I access the master server in Sauerbraten or AssaultCube, but for all other games (Quake, UT3), I can?

Whats wrong?
Any help appreciated - Can't wait to play again.

2: Cube 1 masterserver problems

by SleepwalkR on 05/05/2007 18:54

Hi, Aardappel has told me that a lot of people are having problems registering their servers with the Cube 1 masterserver.

Obvsiouly, some servers do register though. I don't know what the problem is, but I'd like to hear from people who are 100% positive that their firewall and router settings are correct in this thread.

So, do you have problems registering your server, and you are sure that you configured everything correctly? Let me know here.

3: Server ports...?

by pvt. Johnson on 04/14/2007 21:54

hi, i am having trouble getting online with Sauerbraten. i am connected to a router(fire wall) and i cannot connect to the masterserver. is there a port i need to open or a something? please let me know what i need to do to be able to play online.

thanks in advance

4: Trying to set up a linux dedicated server

by lusiux on 07/18/2006 12:44

hey all,

i want to set up a linux dedicated server(no LAN Server) on linux, but i have a IMHO big problem:

The masterserver always respondes:
your server was not registered because it did not respond to ping

And yes, i read the docs about server...

The ports described in the manuals are opened on my router both for udp and tcp.

Has anyone else this problem? Or has anyone a solution?

Thx, lusiux

*******************************************

Hallo Leute,

ich will einen linux dedicated Server(keinen LAN Server) auf meinem Linux Rechner aufsetzen aber leider bin ich auf ein IMHO grosses Problem gestossen.

Der Masterserver antwortet immer mit:

your server was not registered because it did not respond to ping

Und ja, ich hab die docs gelesen!!!

Die Ports die im Manual genannt wurden hab ich auf meinem Router geoeffnet.

Hat jemand von euch auch das Probelm? Oder besser eine Loesung dazu?

Thx, lusiux

5: The Newbie's Guide to Sauerbraten

by Passa on 03/22/2006 13:10

The Newbie’s Guide to Sauerbraten

Hey all, this tutorial is for all you people who are not sure how to get Sauerbraten up, running and configured for your system. Yes you could read the docs, but these can be a bit daunting for newbies. So here is your step by step guide on how to configure Sauerbraten.

Download Sauerbraten (this is pretty obvious, head over to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=102911 to get the latest release.)

Installation on Windows will normally be via a setup exe. On Linux you just extract the tar.gz file onto your hard disk, but remember this tutorial is designed for Windows.

Once it is installed, go to Start > All Programs/Program Files (this name is dependent on your operating system) > Sauerbraten, then right click the Sauerbraten file you see there. Go to properties. You should see a window like this:

http://suprfile.com/get.php?id=95jg7t

Hit the ‘Find Target…’ button. This will bring you to a window like this:

http://suprfile.com/get.php?id=95kjwg

Right click the file named ‘sauerbraten’ and go to edit. Notepad will open and you will see something like this:

bin\sauerbraten.exe -w1024 –h768 %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

Now you need to know your screen resolution. If you know it, substitute the –wXXX value for the width and –hXXX value for the height. If not, minimise all the windows onscreen, right click desktop and go to properties. Go to the ‘Settings’ tab. You should see the resolution in the area circled in the picture here:

http://suprfile.com/get.php?id=95lc8z

The first number is your width, the other is your height. Enter this into the window. For example, from mine I would write:

bin\sauerbraten.exe -w1280 –h1024 %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

If you know you have a low performance computer, add –f after the height, like this:

bin\sauerbraten.exe -w1280 –h1024 –f %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

If you still get low speeds at that width and height then try lower it, but do not go higher. For example, if in display properties it says 1024 x 768 but Sauerbraten runs slowly, then try this:

bin\sauerbraten.exe –w800 –h600 –f %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

The lower the numbers, the less amount of pixels your computer has to render.

Once that is sorted, you need to set up your router to forward ports 27865 and 27866 to play online, that is of course if you have a router in the first place. If you do not have a router, no worries! If you do, then you can either enable UPnP on your router or forward the ports. If you do not know how to do this then consult the manual for your router. In the meantime try to play online anyway, sometimes it does work without the need to configure anything.

Load up Sauerbraten through the menu. After about 10 seconds or so you should see a screen like this:

http://suprfile.com/get.php?id=95ngzc

Now press the ~ key on your keyboard. It should make this:
> /_
appear in the bottom left of the screen.

Now type:
name “your player name”
And press enter. You can do this to change your player name. Remember, it is limited to 15 characters.

Now type:
team “your team name”
And press enter. This is your team name. Best to put this as red or blue unless you are in a clan. Remember, it is limited to 4 characters.

Congratulations! You have configured Sauerbraten!

Now to get used to the controls:
W – moves you forward
A – makes you strafe left
S – moves you back
D – makes you strafe right

Mouse looks around
Left mouse – fires current weapon
Right mouse/spacebar – jumps
Scrollwheel – scrolls through weapons

Muck around for a bit to get used to it.

Using the menu is the next step. Press ESC. You will now see a menu. Go to multiplayer by using the arrow keys to navigate the menu. Press enter. Now go to ‘update server list from master server’ and press enter. Wait a few seconds. If you did not configure your router properly, or you have no internet access, Sauerbraten will hang and freeze. However, if all goes well you will see something like this:

http://suprfile.com/get.php?id=95p4w3

In my one, ‘different protocol’ means the servers are running a different version of Sauerbraten to me. You can connect to any of the other servers. The second column of numbers is how many players there are. Unfortunately in my screenshot there are none. But I will join a server anyway by pressing enter.

http://suprfile.com/get.php?id=95q1xn

Now Sauerbraten has joined the server. It has loaded the current server map. Press TAB to see the scoreboard.

http://suprfile.com/get.php?id=95s3jf

That is the scoreboard. (A) is how many frags you have scored by killing other players. (B) is the ping, the delay in communication between you and the server. This is largely affected by location. If the server is in Germany and you are in Australia, you are not going to get a very good ping. <100 Ping is great. 100 – 200 is average, pretty good, 200 – 300 is still ok, 300 – 400 you will start having problems. (C) is your team name, mostly useful for team games, and (D) is your player name.

Now to learn how to vote on gamemodes. Press ESC, go to ‘multiplayer’, then ‘vote on gamemode/map’. In there select the gamemode you would like to vote on then press enter. Then select the map to play that gamemode on. There must be at least 50% of votes from other players agreeing with you before your vote is passed.

Congratulations! You have mastered all the aspects of playing Sauerbraten! Have fun playing and see you on the servers!

6: Tutorial: How to host a Cube Server.

by {SSDS}Jero on 12/09/2005 19:50

Step 1:First you must figure out whether or not you are on a router. If you are not on a router then Skip to step 3. If you are on a router continue on to step 2. If you do not know whether or not you are on a router, just ask yourself these questions. Are there more than one computer on the internet? Is my computer wireless? If you said yes to one of these questions you are on a router.

Step 2: Now that you know you are on a router you must forward the following ports on your router: 28765 and 28766. They must both foward both UDP and TCP. If you are unsure how to foward ports in your router you can try going to the routers manufacturers website, and search for Port Fowarding in the support area.

Step 3: Now we must get your computer ready to host a server. Go to the Start menu and select Programs and then highlight cube. This should show you the folder where you start cube. Next place your cursor over the \"Cube\" shortcut, (the same thing you click to start cube) and right click. This will bring up a menu, on the menu click \"Copy\". Next go to you desktop and right click. Then Select \"Paste\". This should create an exact copy of your cube shortcut.

Step 4: Now that we have a new cube button on our desktop we need to change it in order to run a cube server. Right click your New cube shortcut and click on \"Properties\". A new window should appear. Look for the area labeled \"Target\". The following should already be entered in target, \"C:\\Program Files\\Cube\\cube.exe\". If it says something similar to that it is ok. Now click right after the cube.exe\" . Insert a space after the Quotation mark and type -d then press space again and type -c6 *note* this changes how many players can join your server, so you can change it whatever number you wish. But remember too many players and your server may lag alot. Next put in anther space and type -nSERVERNAME This is obviously the name that will appear on the server list. Next Click Ok on the properties window.

Step 5: Double Click on your new Cube Shortcut. This should bring up a black window simmilar to the command prompt we saw earlier. It should automattically try and start your server. If you recieve the message that your server was successfully added....Then Congratz! your server is up and running! If you unfortunatly get the message that \"your server does not respond to pings\", then you need to go back to step 2 and figure out what you did wrong on port fowarding.

Step 6: Remember that you must leave the window that came up open in order for your server to keep running. If you close the black window on your desktop your sever will shut down. Now you can start up Cube from the start menu (the way you normally do) and go to \"update server from master list\". Once you see your server on the list (it should be the very first seeing that you will have the best ping on it) double click it and FRAG AWAY!

I hope this will be helpful to someone. If you have any questions or see something that I missed please feel free to post.
Thanks. Jero.

7: Router and dedicated server

by _Fanatic on 06/18/2005 03:54

I decided to run a dedicated server on my dedicated server box, but I keep getting an error about not responding to a ping:

---------------------------------

init: sdl
init: net
dedicated server started, waiting for clients...
Ctrl-C to exit

looking up wouter.fov120.com...
sending request to wouter.fov120.com...
masterserver reply:

Server not registered: You did not respond to ping.

---------------------------------

I turned my firewall off even, no change.

I assume it's because my PC's IP is 192.168.0.2, and when it goes through the router it translates into my public IP address.

I searched the forums and checked the readme, but I can't seem to find anything on getting this to work (or I don't know what to search for to find it).

Does anyone else have a setup like this? One router and multiple PCs on it, one is a dedicated server.

by chasester on 11/25/2016 02:54 in Any way to host a cube 2 server with hamachi?

I need your specs

So Operating System, cpu model, Network interface card, Any information regarding your router or other useful info where your System may differ from a normal rig. Also inlcude any antivirus or other programs that may hender networking.

If you have a firewall or antivirus try turning it off or adding sauerbraten at the highest level of "ok programs".

If you where curious why this error is occuring. This is due to a rejection from enet. Enet is a server interface library that handels all of sauers client server comunications. The function enet_host_create() is returning null instead of giving back a ENetHost object. This is probably due to a firewall or antivirus block. Or some other block put by your router or system administrator.

There is no known errors with enet, and this function so this must be some kinda block by some outside program or other system level function.

#2: Re: master server not replying

by suicizer03 on 05/21/2016 03:32 in Bug Reports

- Check your firewall settings that Sauwrbraten isn't being blocked (more about this in the Sauerbraten Wiki FAQ).
- Check your router isn't blocking either.

#3: Re: Ping master server

by NikP on 05/04/2016 18:37 in General Thread

The problem is that you don't have got the appropiate ports to your server opened for the outside world. So YOU can connect to their server but THEY can't because your ports are blocked. You have to create some exceptions on your firewall, router or whatever is behind your local network and connects you to the outside.

#4: Cube server lister question! Error on update from master!

by zor1984qq on 12/04/2015 21:04 in General Thread

how to fix CSL working? http://cubelister.sourceforge.net/

well I tried to install these thing but it seems the master server is not replying at all (i did exception via windows firewall when it asks me for connection, what port do i need to forward on my router for CSM?) I get just "Error on update from master: sauerbraten.org".

Any ideas on how to fix that problem, I do not find any info on where to find list of master servers or servers, their parameters like ports or path. The original CSM project has no info on extended configuration options.

Please help me figure out how to force these great CSM app to work ^_^

#5: Re: ..

Then your firewall or router probably blocks Sauerbraten from making connection to the master server (and vice versa).

#6: Re: "Server Network Error"

by eihrul on 03/28/2013 20:02 in Bug Reports

This could basically be anything from the Windows firewall, your ISP throttling UDP traffic, a bad wifi router, or any number of explanations. Not sure what to tell you, other than that something between you and the server on the network is messing up...

#7: Re: Can't Connect

by eihrul on 03/15/2013 17:49 in Bug Reports

Make sure your router or firewall is not getting in the way of UDP traffic that is necessary for your client to ping those servers, and for them to send the response back to you... An overly sensitive firewall might think you are being DDoSed. :)

#9: Unable to connect to server

by midtowng on 08/01/2012 19:52 in server lan

I've been trying to set up Sauerbraten on a LAN and I need some help. And yes, I've already read the documentation.

I have Windows 7 workstations with no internet access. I've disabled the firewall on the workstations and I've set port forwarding on the wireless router.

However, I still can't connect to the workstation that is running the server. Not even on the same workstation.
Most times I just get a "not able to connect" error, but sometimes it tells me that the server is running in "private mode" (despite me starting the server in default mode and in d1).

I've used up all sorts of time on this. Anyone have any suggestions.

#10: Re: How to play Sauerbraten through a proxy?

Get your own connection or get admin access on your university so Sauerbraten won't be blocked on the router (or anything else)...

#20: Re: A little help with servers here.

by eihrul on 01/03/2011 13:15 in General Thread

It's UDP, not TCP, and most UDP ports are blocked by default on a router. You would need to find two consecutive open UDP ports (i.e. N and N+1) for it to work, then you could make the server run on port N. But again, I doubt there are any open UDP ports by default on your router...

Also disable DMZ and that third port forwarding rule. DMZ is unnecessary and I have no clue what you're trying to do with that third rule.

I note DD-WRT reports your WAN IP is 192.168.100.100... this should only be if there is another device between your router and the Internet.

#23: Re: fixed

by eihrul on 06/23/2010 06:45 in Unable to join games

Try doing this command in the Sauer console: /maxservpings 10

Usually this is because whatever router they are using is dropping server pings, so setting it to only ping 10 at once like that sometimes fixes it.

#24: ..

by tempest on 05/10/2010 14:50 in General Thread

Read the docs, please.
http://cube.wikispaces.com/Multiplayer+Guide#Server%20Hosting and http://sauerbraten.org/docs/config.html#server_commands

Hint: You have to forward your ports if you are behind a router, and don't forget to open the required firewall ports.
If you want your server not to show up on the masterserver, add -mlocalhost to the server command line.
If you want your server to be completely locked, set a connect password.

#28: Server listing bug

by asdasd:D on 08/19/2009 14:18 in Bug Reports

Windows XP SP3
GF 8600
Trooper edition

When I click on \"Update server list...\", Sauerbraten gets ~6 tabs of IP adresses and marks them as \"Checking\". After a second, it lists their full statuses — but only for about 16 of them (that number may be, say, 14 or 20), others are still \"checked\". And that servers are pretty much the same each time, I guess it is because their adresses are listed first. For example, I have never seen TC-servers\' stats, but if I find one of their IP\'s in the list and click on it, game will connect smoothly. I have tried to /clearservers and /updatefrommaster from console, to wait for random amount of time between refreshing, to refresh list twice in a second, but the result is still the same.

When I run \"netstat -s -p UDP\", it shows that sauerbraten sends dozens of UDP packets at the same moment I refresh the list, so I guess it sends them to all of the servers but something limits most of them from reaching their destinations. Firewall is off, no other software running, DDOS protection on the router is off, too (and its logs doesn\'t list dropped packets). So, my ISP seems to be blocking the outgoing virus attacks in such a way that it conflicts with sauerbraten network protocol.

Is (or will be) there any option to add a little delay when scanning multiple servers? Let it be zero for all the ordinary people, but someone could use it to overcome such limitations.

AFAIR I noticed it when I installed Trooper edition on both of my computers, but I was too lazy to write a report and didn\'t play much to worry about it.

P.S. There still can be a bug somethere, I don\'t have explicit data that my ISP is really blocking suspicious network activity. :-)

you can't access your own WAN-IP via the LAN .. at least not with 97.424% of consumer-class routers!
You need to do something like "/connect localhost" or "/connect 192.168.23.23" (assuming that the latter is the LAN-IP of the box running the server).

by blackdot on 07/23/2009 21:05 in General Thread

I forwarded both the udp-ports, and the server.bat says that 'master server registration succeeded'. I see my server at the end of the list "waiting for response" but he stays there. If i try to join, it doesn't work.

#33: Re: Can´t start the server

by MovingTarget on 06/12/2009 03:38 in General Thread

Actually, if you just want to host a LAN server, then don't do any router configuration. Just type "/lanconnect" in the other clients.

The only reason you'd need to connect to the masterserver was if you're going to run a public server.

#34: Re: Can´t start the server

Thx for your respons!

You mean, i have to config my router?

"Servers use the ports 28785 (UDP) and 28786 (UDP)"

But why my server need a connection to a Master Server? What is a Master server? Look the server over my LAN to himself and can´t do that, because the ports are not free?
Is that right?

by MovingTarget on 06/11/2009 15:06 in General Thread

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you're behind a router, right? If you are...you have to forward the correct ports to your server machine. The ports are in docs/config.html.

#36: Connecting to Friends on Multiplayer

by ReanimatedYatzi on 05/31/2009 23:20 in General Thread

I'm currently trying to connect with a friend on multiplayer (we're sharing connection with a router at the moment). We tried to search for each other on the server list, but we cannot find each other.

Is there something we're overlooking? LAN also doesn't work. I had seen something about making a server, but I'm not "techy" enough to know how to do that.

Please excuse me if this is a noobie question as I am new to this game.

#37: Re: how?

by MovingTarget on 05/26/2009 00:36 in Server Problems

That depends on the router. I believe a couple people have recommended www.portforward.com as a good resource.

#38: ..

by MovingTarget on 05/25/2009 19:57 in Server Problems

You've made a simple mistake. If you have a router, you have to forward the correct ports to your server machine, as specified in the included docs. 28785-28786, the last time I checked.

It also helps to have a static local IP outside of the normal DHCP range, so you don't have to change the forwarding address each time the lease expires.

#39: Re: ..

by MovingTarget on 03/24/2009 13:49 in General Thread

Do you have a router? If you do, then that's probably the problem. Forward the ports Sauerbraten needs and you should be fine.

For the iTouch, unless someone has made a Cube:iPhone specific server, than it is correct that your client can't connect to servers. You'd get pwned online anyway, the iPhone controls are hardly superior to keyboard and mouse.

But lets not start that war.

***

Make sure that any form of firewall is not blocking Sauer, sorry Cube2 from accessing the net (NetBarrier/Little Snitch etc.). Since your iPod can retrieve servers, then the problem does not lie with your router's configuration, I believe.

Else, try clicking the button a few more times.

It's not sauerbraten that causes these problems, it's lack of knowledge of basic router settings/configurations. Every router on the market does this by default. Read your manuals.

I think it's pretty bad, but it should work. (Make sure you read the link on static IP addresses.

Also make sure to use the Sauerbraten ports (28785-28786, UDP), not the SMTP ports.

Do you have a router? If so, forward the aforementioned UDP ports. I have a Linksys WRT54G (one of the more popular routers, if I'm not mistaken) and I was able to get a test server to "respond to ping".
You could just set your server machine as the DMZ host, but only use that as a last resort.

#47: Re: ..

by MovingTarget on 10/23/2008 18:58 in all servers are empty

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you only have to open ports on your router when you're home-hosting a server. You need to create exceptions in your firewall (if you have one), but no opening ports.

Correct me if I'm off.

#50: Re: Serverlist

by Quin on 09/10/2008 06:32 in General Thread

This is actually quite common, especially in BitTorrent communities. Alot of the time it has to do with overloading the NAT tables, as those routers have few resources (alot like the D-Link run Linux/BusyBox). You'd probably also find that Windows XP SP2 and later systems do the same thing when they hit 128 concurrent connection attempts - there just aren't that many active servers.

#51: Re: Serverlist

by a~baby~rabbit on 09/09/2008 07:54 in General Thread

With regards to not all servers showing in the serverlist...

In my case it seems the issue was that my d-link router does something wacky to wifi connections, like throttling UDP connection rates (i.e. a rather enthusiastic interpretation of UDP being lossy). Plugging directly into the router via ethernet eliminated the problem.

Unfortunately I don't have any non-Mac wifi gear to 100% eliminate the chance that the issue is related to Mac.

-

Oh, and Homicidal: I opened udp 28785 and udp 28786, the ports it tells me in the Wiki. And no, I don't use a firewall. Windows firewall is disabled, and the only other possible thing blocking it is my Router NAT, which (I think) I opened the correct ports for.

I shouldn't even have to open ports unless I'm hosting a server though. Atleast I haven't ever had to for any other game.

by SheeEttin on 08/03/2008 05:52 in General Thread

I use Kubuntu, and I don't think I've ever gotten a server running (not that I've ever really tried).

I think starting with Hardy (maybe Gutsy), there is a firewall (or at least some iptables/ipchains) thing installed by default, though I don't know if it's enabled, or even how you configure it.

To test your server, try these commands (in Sauer) in sequence:
/connect 127.0.0.1
/connect 192.168.1.100 // (or whatever your LAN IP is)
/connect 24.3.87.215 // (or whatever your WAN IP is)
If one fails, it'll tell you where the problem is. 127.0.0.1 should work, because it shouldn't leave your host (computer). 192.168.1.100 will pass through your router and back to you. Connecting to your WAN IP will connect out through your router and the world of the Internet, then back to you.

Aside from that, I can't really help.

ulysses (aka reaper), I already answered your question. Server on Mac:

- Launch the Sauerbraten Launcher, choose the Server tab, set your values.

- make sure your router forwards ports 28785 (UDP) and 28786 (UDP) to your LAN IP.

- done

#57: Re: Mac Server

by SanHolo on 07/13/2008 20:08 in General Thread

Start the Sauerbraten Launcher. Select the "Server" Tab. Enter a name and other variables. Hit "Start". Done.

Make sure you forward (or trigger) ports 28765 and 28766 from your Router to your Mac. This is done in the Settings of the Router.

There's a guide on the Apple Airport Extreme... (For some moronic reason, there's a guide for each and every application. I chose HTTP, because Sauer is the only thing not on the list.) It's here: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Apple/AirPortExtreme/HTTP.htm

See if that applies to your router. (The ports you want to forward are 28785 and 28786, both UDP. Poke around for a UDP option.)

#64: still stuck

by MeatROme on 05/07/2008 20:02 in How do i start a server ??

Well, that was a clear & concise description of your issue, for sure.

To state another (obvious) possible error:
you need to forward both ports;
the higher one is for the info-port - if that is forwarded correctly your server will register ... the lower one is for the actual players - only if it is forwarded correctly will the server be actually able to host games to people outside your LAN.

As you described your routers options with that prefix of "NAT", I'll just assume your router is actually capable of it - because, as you might or might not be aware, there are routers out there that can't! (might want to check portforward.com though, to be sure, IIRC they have a list of commonly distributed models that fail to live up to expectancies).

Have you, by chance, ever hosted other services behind the firewall, that'd answer the Q too!?!

how about making a note of your external IP and asking people to manually connect .. that would help you if you maybe have only the game-port forwarded, not the info-port.
To manually connect they would have to type "/connect 123.123.123.123" .. with appropriately correct address of course;
or even your dynamic hostname - if you know that/have e.g. a dynamic-DNS service-provider.

Giving us more details would certainly help giving you more helpful responses :)

A sauer server uses two UDP ports: 78785 and 78786. The master server sends a server info request to your game server on port 78786, and your server is registered upon your reply. ICMP echo is not used.

I can probably offer some advice for the second half.

Some linux distributions require you to play with IPtables, if it's one of those, I'd suggest googling for a howto.

also it much more likely means a bunch of ports weren't forwarded and that UPnP isn't working, so you may also want to google for methods on 'pinholing' your router. the ports are 28785 and 28786 UDP.

Hey Pug! Even though I don't know anything about routers or port forwarding, I want you to think about how much bandwidth you have; if you want it to be a large server, your bandwidth needs double for every client. A good option would be to go to your internet provider and extremely politely ask them if they can host a server for you. I find my Comcast high-speed internet utterly insufficient for even 4 clients; with just 2 there are some lags involved. Also how fast is the machine you are going to be hosting it on?

If your router has a webinterface with a section regarding portforward ... which I kinda read between the lines ... I'm pretty sure you should be able to host your server.

Did you really forward UDP, not TCP?

Have you tried adding your LAN IP via "/addserver" - because it registers with your internet IP and this usually isn't routable - use your LAN ip to connect via sauerbraten - remote users can use the regular serverbrowser though.

For more help you need to elaborate on your problem. Give us brand and make of your router for example ... describe test-scenarios in which remote and/or LAN users have tried to access via serverbrowser and IP seperatedly.

Most routers allow you to set forwarded ports quite easily, others like alcatel you need to do it via telnet.

if you have an alcatel router, look at this guide http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/kemyst/id30.htm

it does help if you set a static network IP y'know

#86: Re: ..

by MovingTarget on 10/12/2007 04:52 in General Thread

I think that the most common router address is 192.168.1.1

Just type that in in your browser's address bar, and if it asks you for a password, you in luck. Just enter that in and you can forward ports.

#87: Re: ..

by Hirato Kirata on 10/12/2007 02:56 in General Thread

You'd think they never ever googled port forwarding/pinholing.

Most of us don't use alcatel routers so it should be easy enough to do it via your router's web interface.

to get to the web interface you just need to type in your IP (not network), or the router's network IP. To my knowledge, windows (I'm just assuming your running windows. uses DHCP so it should already be hiding the IP addresses you need to access the web configuration screen.

Linux users on the other hand can just use apt-get/emerge/yast2 to install telnet, and use that to configure the nat (remember to do a 'nat save' afterwards)

When you do that remember, server ports are currently fixed at UDP 28785 and UDP 28786

That should cover it

The appropriate ports should be 28795 and 28796, TCP/UDP.

I thought something was messed up on mine as well, but figured out the the modem must ALSO be port forwarded to work properly. It should be 192.168.254.254 or somesuch to get into it.

You've gotta have something wrong with your connection configuration then. Your ISP should list how to configure your PC/router to host online games on their website. It's different for every ISP, so you'll have to see what hoops they want you to jump through.

A lot of ISPs do some wierd firewalling things with certain port ranges used by P2P networks now too, so it's entirely possible that they changed how you have to do things. Never assume that just because the way you used to do things worked that they still work that way.

#96: LAN PLAY

by cube mapper on 07/06/2007 06:50 in General Thread

Hi all,

I have a LAN network here at home.
This computer connects directly to the cat5 blue colored cables, and my laptop connects through a wireless router.

I want to start some LAN play for both these computers.

I tried to connect localhost or lan play (forget exactly what its called but there's those 2 options) and neither (this comp or laptop) could connect for some reason.

Just hoping I could get some information on how to go about setting up a game thru LAN, there must be something i'm missing. Cheers!

"It is VERY hard to fix the router to allow you to create a server."

You mean like forwarding/triggering the necessary ports (28765 - 28786) to your server?

Yes, VERY hard!!!

by hungerburg on 06/30/2007 11:43 in Permanent Servers

if you configured the port forwarding correctly (right port number, right private address - the one of the comp where the server runs) on the router it should work: make a setup like this:

macbook ---+ router --- internet
win pc ----/

by Titanic12ship on 06/29/2007 15:19 in General Thread

Did you completely turn off your firewall, even on your internet router? Because that happened to me, and its the router's firewall that is not letting you create a server. It is VERY hard to fix the router to allow you to create a server.

#100: need help starting a server

by Cloud on 06/27/2007 03:20 in Permanent Servers

I've been trying to host a private server so that me and my friends can play, but I always get the message "your server did not respond to ping - check your firewall settings". I went to Portforward.com and figured out how to forward the ports, then I did so. I turned off my Windows firewall (I'm running the game on my MacBook, but the router is connected to a Windows PC.) After all this, I still get the same problem as before I did anything. Is there something I still have to do, or can I just never host a server?

by MeatROme on 06/25/2007 06:44 in New Release - AssaultCube v0.93

Although it pertains foremost to Sauerbraten, it's nearly accurate in regard to AssaultCube (just the ports are different) : http://cube.wikispaces.com/Multiplayer+Guide#hosting

To cut it short:
if you've been handed a cheap router by your ISP, you might not be able to forward ports as required - then you can't host a server, sorry.

What absinth said is completetly correct; just adding my 2¢ worth ;)

#102: Re: setting up a server

Umm, you need to think again - something like Passa said.

Server and client should be kept separate! What do you mean by "all this stuff"?
It's really the newbies who are asking stupid questions by *NOT* reading the manual! Manual says everything - I don't see what's the problem on reading the manual myself!

./bin_unix/linux_server -c<clients> -p<password> -n'<name>' -m<masterserver> -i<ipToBindTo>

By the way, people who are behind routers and cannot see their server as active: Basically, you are unable to connect to your external IP; You will need to add your internal IP to the server list instead - to see the server; DOn't worry - other people will see your server though!

Did you consider:
1) that this game is open, it's not really about the community (although in most cases it owns)
2) that most people in the world who use internet have dynamic IPs (they change when rebooting the router or whatever)?
3) That masterserver cannot do a thing as the people can connect directly to servers
4) There are thousands of proxies online - will you have to ban them too?

...

#112: Re: "Waiting for response" for all server

by Drakas on 01/03/2007 17:12 in General Thread

You only need to open ports if you want to host a server.

To me, sounds like somebody blocking your UDP outgoing connections. Ask whoever is in charge of the routers, firewalls and ask your ISP too, if they are blocking *outgoing* UDP connections or not, cause I think that's the issue. Though, you might wanna simply update the server list, and browse them for at least two minutes.

#113: Re: ports....

by Passa on 10/30/2006 06:12 in Permanent Servers

Nope.

Get permission. If you're the computer savvy person at your place, then YOU should be in control. Put a password on the main computer, change your internet password, lock your router's admin page with a password..

You get the picture :)

go to www.billion.com.au, check out the BI-PAC 7402G router in the wireless/adsl router in the business section, its what I've got, it works beautifully. Some routers will never let you host servers.

I use a Billion BI-PAC 7402G and it works perfectly, however Netgears are known to have problems hosting servers.

by Passa on 09/18/2006 23:33 in Considering shutting down master server...

Lets hope the master server being turned off teaches those bastards a lesson..

BTW like Aardappel said about static IPs for server operators, if you have a dynamic IP, but a cable connection (which can hold the IP for weeeks) try changing your username on the modem, resetting it (it wont connect then obviously) wait a few minutes, reset it again, put your full username back in, and then reset the router/modem again.. you should have a different IP..

For those who have a static IP, you might have to turn your servers off for a while. The cheaters will have servers.cfg in their Sauerbraten directory obviously..

For those who want to meet up to find games, install mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) then just go in the typing area bit at the bottom.. '/server uk.quakenet.org', press enter, once youre connected type /join #sauerbraten and youre done :D

The more people in #sauerbraten the better, so get on any IRC client and join the channel :P

Good point, completely forgot this aspect.

Cable internet is apparently widespread in USA (yeah they adopt all the crap technologies >_>) and cable usually has a static IP along with it. I would still ban an IP if it is a repeat offender (suggesting a static IP.)

Wish it was like Steam, where the Steam ID is just banned on the server instantly :P

Added note to the IP ban thing, its also easy to get around. My ISPs irc channel has rules against swearing. As soon as I say FUCK i am banned for 24 hours. I just go into my router and change my username to not include the ISPs domain name and I instantly get a new IP :P

by Passa on 07/12/2006 00:59 in Hosting a server

Open ports (in the docs) :)

The docs have everything, if you can't host after reading the docs, read them again. Then again. Then again.

But in the meantime (if you're a slow reader) and you've opened ports, and you've configured your computer's firewall (allowing the master server, some firewalls need that to be done, like ZoneAlarm).

It could just be your router, my old one woulden't let me host. Get a business class one.

#127: Re: Same for me on the Mac vertion

if you are behind a firewall / router you have to do some configuration (opening ports or doing port forwards)

#128: Re: masterserver

by MeatROme on 07/10/2006 18:30 in General Thread

Universal Plug&Play has nothing to do with sauerbraten.

Are you playing on the same computer as you used to post?
Since the masterserver update list is transferred just like any other webpage it will work on any computer able to surf the interwebs.

If your servers.cfg (located in the main cube or sauerbraten (cube 2) folder) is empty you could copy this to it (but I cannot guarantee for the validity of IPs over long periods of time or the uptime of any server)

addserver 85.214.56.73
addserver 85.25.52.187
addserver 217.234.74.127
addserver 62.149.14.48
addserver 82.240.106.182
addserver 68.144.13.194
addserver 70.116.9.59
addserver 219.98.38.71
addserver 203.217.70.22

I suspect what you are experiencing isn't a failing response from the master server but more likely failing to communicate with individual sauerbraten servers.
A more detailed description of your problem (e.g. what you see or don't see (if you expect to see something)) would certainly help to help you.

Sauerbraten Network Communication is not implemented via http over tcp on port 80 (like (almost) all surfing).

It is done via ENET and uses udp and tcp.
You need to enable traffic over the respective ports, if you want to host a server a DNAT (or "port forwarding") will be required.

Sauerbraten (Cube 2) uses 28785 and 28786,
Cube uses 28765 and 28766.

If you are using a router you may want to look at http://www.portforward.com.
In case your router isn't among the (as I have heard exhaustive) collection of their database you will need to either contact your vendor, ISP or read the manual that came with it.

It is also highly recommended to read the fine manual that came with Sauerbraten. It is accessible via the README.html in you base sauerbraten folder.

Max, it might just be your router. I coulden't host with my Netgear WGT624 (its not really a router, more like a $300 paperweight) then I got my Billion one, and it went fine.

If you get a new one, get a business standard router (Billion, D-Link and Netcomm are good brands). Home standard ones will not allow a server to be hosted properly (as in, not as fast as a business router).

What speed is your connection anyway? (cr0vax and Max that is)

Don't let thee elder members of your family dictate whether you can open ports or not.. if I have a problem with a family member they either wake up to find a password on their computer or all their ram sticks missing.

Nah seriously, if you know more than your father, then call your ISP, ask for the username and password. Write this down. If the router is wireless write down the name of the wireless network, its encryption protocol and the password.

Oh then go on Google and look up something like this "<insert router name and model here> default password". Then reset it, put in your settings again, and congratulations, you now have control of the router.

However if your father knows more about computer related stuff than you, just ask him to put your computer into the DMZ on your router. This will forward ALL ports to you, so you never have to ask him again.

Oh forgot to mention, its highly unlikely your dad even changed the router password, just do that Google search I mentioned before to confirm.

#142: Re: pings...

by MeatROme on 06/15/2006 12:53 in MultiPlayer

Dunno what system you are on and wether or not your PC is connected directly to the internet or goes via a hardware router or some PC router or whatever...
...in a nutshell :
Cube 1 uses these ports:
28765
28766
Cube 2 uses these ports:
28785
28786

Both TCP and UDP are required.
TCP handles the server update routines mostly (IIRC) ... but to be on the safe side enable both TCP & UDP.

You need to _forward_ these to the PC running the server so that any calls from the internet to those ports get passed directly to that machine -
this also means that you will run into trouble if you try to host a server and a client inside your LAN.
Move the server into your DMZ if this is what you wish to do.
Explaining what a DMZ is and how to move a PC there would definitely be too much for this forum - google yourself to knownledge!

#156: Constant Disconnections and Building from Source

by Canada on 12/30/2005 00:09 in General Thread

Many who have played Cube with me over the last few weeks may have noticed me grumbling about being regularly disconnected. At the moment I am lucky to get 2 minutes of uninterrupted play. I get the disconnected from server message, and then can (normally) connect again for another burst of play.

Well I finally decided Id try do something about it. The first and most obvious step (after tweaking every f'ing setting I can think of on my router) was to compile from source and see if that made any difference. I was even thinking that I might be able to do some debugging.

Unfortunately this has also been my last step. Only after compiling did I read the end of the Readme and learn about this incompatibility thing that has been built in to deter cheats.

So, my question is simply is there anything that can be done? Is it possible to build your own compatible Cube.

Thanks.

Sounds like you need to allow the relevant UDP ports through your firewall or router.

by MeatROme on 11/14/2005 12:01 in Random Lockups with linux & ATi video card...

I talked to shavvn on IRC and we both agreed that these issues seemed to occur in conjuction with missing/erronous port forwarding.

If you are behind a router you should definitely see to it that :
UDP ports 28765 and 28766 get forwarded (maybe even DNATed). I usually also do that for the same TCP ports - to be on the safe side.

For sauerbraten the ports are 28785 and 28786.

See the documentation that came with the game!

by kernowyon on 09/11/2005 16:38 in Server help

1 Try reading the docs which came with the game to familiarize yourself with the various options etc.

2 The autoconfig is indeed a cfg file. That is nothing more than a text file. I would assume you run Windows? If so - try opening the file with notepad. Its just simple text. Nothing special.

3 Although you downloaded the game today, you may have grabbed the wrong version. You want the version which starts with 2005_08 something. All older versions do not now see the masterserver , so you cannot see the available games.

4 Do you run any sort of protection for your system? You say no router, thats fine, but do you have a firewall or other means of preventing people getting into your system? If so, you need to make sure traffic to and from the game can get to you. The ports you need to open are well documented - 2 of them, both UDP - 28765 and 28766

I'm don't know if this is an issue but if the mastersever issues a normal ping (as opposed to a cube specific ping that the server program responds to) your router may be set up not to respond to it as this is one of the ways hackers and viruses check if there is a box ata specific ip.

I think I have an idea of what you're talking about but only one thing comes to my mind - the coopedit bug which prevented placement of mapmodels. Although it took me a while to figure it out it was easy because it was fixed in a later release and all I had to do was debug a little (on the most easy and amateur level) and compare the releases to see what was changed. However there are some bugs that are really nasty, I didn't mention it but when I was testing my router at some point both PCs happened to display the windows xp blue screen of death, a few seconds after exiting the game (at different times, not simultaneously). This really sux, you can't do anything except restarting. You can't debug, you can only stare for a while at the nice "windows bla bla bla to prevent damage to your computer"... My intuition says it's something to do with video and maybe networking but the only thing certain about my intuition is that I don't have any.. and I can't rely on anything else here.

I bought a router that handles lan and wireless connections. When there are more than one PCs connected wireless it takes more time to ping one of them and there may be some packet loss from time to time. When I tried Cube I believe this caused one of the clients to disconnect regularly, the problem disappeared when only one pc was connected wireless (the other lan) and there were no losses. I've played the same version of Cube on the internet a long time ago but although my connection was laggy I don't remember being disconnected so often. I'm probably misguided, as usual, but would like to ask - does Cube (or ENET) handle lan and internent clients differently, and how does it handle packet loss?

I just turn zone alarm off (disable) when playing online. Then I reboot after playing to get zone alarm working again. There is a way to tell zone alarm what programs are "allowed" thru it, but it still sometimes locks up the game, so I don't bother using a (software) firewall when playing. My wireless router (belkin) has a hardware firewall built in that never messes up games online.

Yes, if you have the admin password (default is usually just "admin").

http://192.168.1.1/ with your browser. That'll take you to a webpage hosted inside your router that can be used to reconfigure it. There should be a port forwarding page at which you can set it to forward the ports needed for Cube (don't know offhand what they are) to your machine.

#190: Re: How do I create a dedicated server??

by D.plomat on 06/02/2004 11:28 in General Thread

Looks like your port forwarding isn't working. You can safely ignore this if all ppl you want to join your server are on a local network. then you should add -mblah option in the server.bat like this:
bin\cube.exe -d -mblah %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

Of course, if you want ppl on the internet to be able to join your server, you'll have to manage to get the port forwarding/nat right. This is different for differents routers. Be sure its UDP ports 28765 and 28766, not TCP that you should forward to the internal IP of the server.

Start cube_server.bat, then:

if you're on the same network(LAN), tell them to type T then /connect the_ip_of_your_server

if you want them to join via internet, be sure that the machine running the cube_server.bat has a public IP address (or a port forwarding if you're behind a router/NAT)

then give them the public IP of this machine so they can type T then /connect the_ip

Or better, open a no-ip account http://www.no-ip.com , install the updater daemon/service and tell them to T /connect your_server.no-ip.com

Yes, the maps are damn smalls... the thing we can save space on is replacing the oggs by mods and midi.

about the 50Mb creditcard CD, i don't think we can put an XFree with all modules in the remaining of 50Mb minus Linux base system and Cube, so we'll need a 80mm CD (180Mb i think)... so probably we'll have enough space left to keep the oggs and include every map :)

> in a hw router, there's not much he can do but forward trafic.

same thing on my 5Mb mini-linux, one can eventually use read-only medias, and an enough restricted set of installed commands.

Of course, if someone uses a vanilla RedHat install or other generic oriented distro, they don't have optimal security, but many ppl even use the net-sharing option of W2K/XP to use a windows box as router, so of course for those ppl wanting a shared internet connection set-up in some minutes, it'd be better if they stick to using an hw router instead of using a desktop OS(be it Linux or Windows) as router.

Totally agree on avoiding too recent hardware/software.

#210: Re: router

by Drakker_ on 05/01/2004 23:50 in Has anyone been receiving more spam or virus threats?

Of course, you are right, but keep in mind that if someone gets in a hw router, there's not much he can do but forward trafic. If someone gets in a freebsd or linux machine... then things can get really bad. It's all a matter of what you can do once you are in. You can't install anything in a hw router, but in a software one, you can do anything.

If you are shopping for a cheap hw router, never take a new model, buy an older one who has a great track record. Asante routers come to mind.

#212: Re: router

by D.plomat on 05/01/2004 19:56 in Has anyone been receiving more spam or virus threats?

Agree with Thalion, you can do more useful things like adding traffic shaping or similar, content-based filtering, which is unlikely to be done by a cheap hw router.

Also about things you think you have on an OS, if you don't need extra features, you can use a minimalist OS like i do: with busybox and a kernel on a 486, it's system is only 5Mb (and could even be smaller if i was less lazy ;)
...It doesn't host any service so a nessus scan of it is totally blank :)

And you shouldn't assume hw routers are invulnerable... several have known holes and probably Linux/BSD kernels are much more security-tested than firmware of those routers (which are sometime modified versions of those OSes and others, but you have less control on it than a host you build from scratch)

#213: Re: router

by Thalion on 05/01/2004 17:57 in Has anyone been receiving more spam or virus threats?

My router is not just a router... runs a caching proxy as well, does proxy chaining for me (to get past the institute firewall), and then I also use it to test-run my PHP stuff on Apache under FreeBSD since it's quite often what the target platform is.

"Services to take care of hardware devices" are just drivers - and those aren't exposed to the network, so it's pretty hard to remotely exploit a driver =) And services - well, I trust FreeBSD firewall enough for that. Otherwise, it's pretty stable - haven't crashed once yet (56 days uptime, I rebooted it once). And hey, it's fun =)

#214: router

by Drakker_ on 05/01/2004 14:37 in Has anyone been receiving more spam or virus threats?

I prefer hardware router, software routers, however good the OS its running, will never be as safe as an hardware router because there's all kind of services that must run to take care of the computer devices not found in hardware router. Less is a lot more when it comes to routers.

I highly doubt "hackers" will ruin your fun MitaMAN, its "crackers" that are evil... hackers are just very good programmers like Aard. :)

And if you dont want to bother with all the virus, worms and crap, just don't run windows. Install Linux or get a Mac, simple as that.

#215: Re: ..

by Thalion on 05/01/2004 10:08 in Has anyone been receiving more spam or virus threats?

An old P100-32Mb with FreeBSD installed on it serves as a very nice router/firewall. Then you can forget about Blaster and all that =)

Oh, and concealing your IP address is "security through obscurity", which never actually works. You'd better make your system secure enough to withstand an attack.

you're probably trying to run it from behind a firewall/nat router/proxy or other (or even windows packet filtering or third party software-firewall).

What's your internet connection? network/machine config? OS? provider?

Make sure that ports 28765 and 28766 of your server machine are reachable from Internet if you want to host a public server. If you want a private server (most likely for tests), add -mblah option to the server command-line and ignore the warning in the console window.

#223: Here they are... ultimate killer cheats

by D.plomat on 06/23/2003 17:41 in Cheats

keywords: cheats "be the best" win victory aimbot "god mode" invincible "make money" "lose weight" "unsecured credit card" p0rn "stop spam ;)"

cheat in SP: maybe to visit the maps... so use ffa/default or coop.

cheat in MP: behind your router/masq/ICS/whatever, plug 4-5 PC's, open cube on the same server, you don't even need a monitor for each PC, connect your machine and voila...
they won't move/shoot and you can frag them easily for hours, and you'll get an awesome score you'll be very proud of ;)

...don't forget to take a screenshot and print-it on glossy paper to display on your living-room.

I get it working!
I'm sharing my internet connection with my 2 pc and I'm using Winroute as nat router.
The problem is the port used by Cube is not 28765 but 28766 so I had port mapping problems!
(the doc seems to be outdated)

Which port does cube use to communicate through during multiplay? My router is blocking the incoming connections, when I am trying to host a server! :(

No, not all cable and dsl modems have firewalls, that's not true. Most dsl routers do though, but modems don't.
