Router and dedicated server

by _Fanatic on 06/18/2005 03:54, 6 messages, last message: 06/22/2005 19:30, 1460 views, last view: 05/03/2024 04:55

I decided to run a dedicated server on my dedicated server box, but I keep getting an error about not responding to a ping:

---------------------------------

init: sdl
init: net
dedicated server started, waiting for clients...
Ctrl-C to exit

looking up wouter.fov120.com...
sending request to wouter.fov120.com...
masterserver reply:

Server not registered: You did not respond to ping.

---------------------------------

I turned my firewall off even, no change.

I assume it's because my PC's IP is 192.168.0.2, and when it goes through the router it translates into my public IP address.

I searched the forums and checked the readme, but I can't seem to find anything on getting this to work (or I don't know what to search for to find it).

Does anyone else have a setup like this? One router and multiple PCs on it, one is a dedicated server.

Totally forgot about that, my router is locked down tight, so yeah, the traffic was blocked.

It opened now, got it to register.

Let me know if you (or anyone) can connect, and if the bandwidth sucks or not. I have a webserver and SHOUTcast server running on the same machine, so if a lot of streaming or downloads are going on, the Cube server will definately lag a bit.

I can lessen the quality of the streaming audio if needed too.

Actually, now I can't seem to find my server in the server list within Cube. It shows on this websites server list, but the host name is a mile long, but I don't see it even after updating the list within Cube, and all the servers there say "[different cube protocol]" next to them.

I'm still able to connect, so I don't know what's wrong with the non-dedicated server, or the dedicated server...

Any ideas?

For the love of god do not use the DMZ. That's dangerous and Morgaine never should have mentioned it. Find out the exact ports each application needs and only open those. If your router supports triggers that's even better.

I'm don't know if this is an issue but if the mastersever issues a normal ping (as opposed to a cube specific ping that the server program responds to) your router may be set up not to respond to it as this is one of the ways hackers and viruses check if there is a box ata specific ip.

If you have a router and haven't played with the settings then responding to ping shouldn't be a problem. You should be able to route the ping to the router and have it respond.

I think I have it working, I've seen the console show people connecting and disconnecting. No idea on what the performance is like for them (no one's reported any issues to me so far, here or on my website (http://fanaticalproductions.net)
