well, i was about to write something about having an interactive shell, but then i came to re-read the post ("web server" and "i have ftp access tho"). And instead of ... anyways.

On the other hand i often run my cube server offline. Not that it's my intention ;-P

apache => probably a Linux server?
private = LAN, or 'selected crow' on the net? i'll assume this second option.

Apache has nothing to do with Cube, it's not a problem if you have both on your server provided you have enough bandwidth for both.

first, be sure that your server has a DIRECT internet connection (ie not behind a NAT router/Masquerade/proxy etc)

then it's as easy as:
# wget http://tunes.org/~eihrul/linux_server
# ./linux_server -mblah

remove the -mblah option if you want it to be displayed on the masterserver page

clients press 'T' to enter chat mode, then they type:
/connect here_they_type_your_ip

...and they frag!

Was that enough 'spoonfeeding'? ;)

when i say here_they_type_your_ip, of course i'm speaking of the public IP of your server, if they connect from the net, or the private IP of the server if they're on your LAN

ok a couple questions: what happens if you *are* behind a router? also, can you be behind a router for lan games?

Then you need to forward the port to your computer. Google for how to forward ports for your router and look up the port number in the manual.

> can you be behind a router for lan games?

No one would have it set up that way.

It seems I have a problem with port forwarding my linux server...
The manual say to forward only the 28765 port, but it doesn\'t to work for me ?

#17: Clean servers list

by seb_10081980 on 11/14/2005 22:43

Hello !

Would it be possible for the moderator to create one thread, that only him could modify, with a "up to date" (a big word, indeed) list of servers ?
People who would like to share a server could contact the moderator and give their server address.

I believe it would be much easier for people, and would avoid reading all the posts, which generally have no relation.

#18: Server Hosting - back to topic :)

by MeatROme on 11/25/2005 13:35

Well, regarding the previous posts :
To run a cube server you will require SSH access to your linux server, then ensure that the required ports (see docs) are accessible. (UDP _and_ TCP)

For Windows-Servers a RemoteDesktop-Connection should work but that's not my turf ;-)

My current reason for popping by is :
<LOG_EXCERPT>
disconnecting client (some-client.domain.net) [packet length]
linux_server: tools.h:189: T& vector<T>::operator[](int) [with T = client]: Assertion `i>=0 && i<ulen' failed.
</LOG_EXCERPT>
The above excerpt from my log seems to have killed the server.
Seems the culprit (hostname was modified to protect it's owner (even if guilty))
has created an illegal packet length ...

Last couple of days a lot of regular Cube-Servers are no longer online - is this the reason or something else?

#19: Server Hosting

Using Linux 2.6 (MEPIS 3.3 / Debian 1:3.3.5-8), i have the following problem:

---------------------------------------
user@linux[cube]$ ./bin_unix/linux_server
dedicated server started, waiting for clients...
Ctrl-C to exit

looking up wouter.fov120.com...
sending request to wouter.fov120.com...
masterserver reply:

Your server was not added because it did not respond to ping!
---------------------------------------

Everything else works fine. My system ussually responds to ping-requests. What\'s the matter with that?

Sounds like you need to allow the relevant UDP ports through your firewall or router.
How you do that depends on your particular router or whatever.

#21: Game Server

by bobgb4 on 12/02/2005 16:00

Hey,

My friends and I at school have a computer club and we wanted to build a game server so that we could all connect via about 10 computers on a LAN. Someone suggested Cube and I checked it out and I thought it was a kool game.

So...

Do you think that it would be a good idea to try this out. Would it be better to run it on FreeBSD or RedHat (i know a good deal about both).

Also, how hard is it to get something like this started? Any1 know of any good tutorials that could get me started?

Thx

Find the name of one comp (compname), start a server there, and everyone start Cube and do /connect compname.

Add the -cN (N=a number of players e.g -c8 for 8 players max) option to the startline :)

How do I access the \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"startline\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" to add variables for certain things? Like I want to make the max players more than 4 when i\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m hosting a LAN game for my computer class. I tried doing -c# in the game(using / for command or just plain t for talk) and it still didn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t work. Can someone specifically give me instructions on where to add this \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"-c#\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" for max players?
