Idea - A building game based on Sauerbraten?

by sin2051 on 07/16/2007 18:39, 38 messages, last message: 11/07/2008 22:05, 14055 views, last view: 05/18/2024 22:45

I've been playing Sauerbraten a lot the past few days, mainly in coop-edit, and I have to say, the engine seems quite amazing. Building things is both fun and lag-free.
What I would like to see is a building game/mode where instead of using the mouse wheel and treating the map like a single entity, players can put down pseudo-Lego-style-bricks in a similar fashion to the game Blockland (http://www.blockland.us/), but in a much faster environment, and open source.
While I have no programming ability at all, I'm just throwing this out there as a possible idea. I know many people that would love to see something like this as well, and I'm sure it would be a nice, friendly, relaxed gamemode for the creative masses.

I have both a garbage computer and connection, and the only time it ever lagged for a second was when I raised HUGE selections of cubes. Even when relighting the maps, my clients got no lag.

You've gotta have something wrong with your connection configuration then. Your ISP should list how to configure your PC/router to host online games on their website. It's different for every ISP, so you'll have to see what hoops they want you to jump through.

A lot of ISPs do some wierd firewalling things with certain port ranges used by P2P networks now too, so it's entirely possible that they changed how you have to do things. Never assume that just because the way you used to do things worked that they still work that way.

Its only a microsecond of lag when someone starts shaping the corners of a huge number of cubes. And its just you ;)

As Passa said, lag depends on how effective you build. Beginners tend to spam alot, hence the lag.

No comments on the actual idea? And with things being made brick-by-brick, you wouldn't have to worry about the spikes of lag that happen when you edit large areas...

I'm not sure if you mentioned the point/need for this kind of a project?

Instead of being based around shooting, it would be based around building, and building with many other people and not having to worry about idiots screwing things up. Sauerbraten's map edit mode is nice, but it's not suitable for public servers. Give Blockland a try if you don't know what I'm talking about...

ATIRULE: I have Sauerbraten on my

Pentium 3 (Coppermine) 800MHz

256MB ram

nVidia GeForce FX5200 (128mb)

Qwest DSL (Not as fast as your connection)

And either you are lying about the lag, just so you can get a feature, or there is something seriously wrong with your setup.
