#3985: Is Windows compatible now?

by takua00108 on 02/07/2005 02:55

I used Cube about a year back, loved it, and now I want to know if it still works for Windows.

Please email the answer to: adam@thetyphooncorp.com or typhooncorp@hotmail.com. Thanks a bundle, Adam

Yes, looks like it's a different problem. Unfortunately i've no Fedora box so i can't try to reproduce it.

Yes, it's still compatible with Windows.
The install file is a .tar.gz so you need to have an archiver that can handle it (7-zip/winrar/powerarchiver...)

Ok, I've made a *little* progress (I think).

First, I had been using a program called imwheel to enable the use of my MS IntelliMouse Explorer. I disabled this program.

Second, I believe you meant for me to export this:

export MALLOC_CHECK_=0

(Notice the trailing underscore.)

When I do that before executing the cube_unix script, my mouse no longer freezes (and hence I don't have to restart X). Also the output is now:

[cube]$ export MALLOC_CHECK_=0
[cube]$ ./cube_unix
init: sdl
init: net
init: world
game mode is ffa/default
init: video: sdl
init: video: mode
init: video: misc
init: gl
init: basetex
init: sound
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)
[cube]$

I don't notice a core file anywhere. If I could find/coerce one, would it be helpful to you? Any other ideas? Thanks!

Mark

What has this to do with Cube? I'm not even sure what the stem of your question is... what is yeti3D?

Yeti3d = handheld-oriented clone of Cube.

Well, that reply contains precious feedback :)

About imwheel, i have a Debian machine where i have problem with the mousewheel, i'll check this.

About the trailing underscore, that'll prevent me from writing something wrong in the FAQ ;)

The SDL parachute error, it is some generic SDL error, and it's most common cause is when a program uses the sound card.

First check that all media players are stopped, not just paused.
Then check that your desktop manager hasn't started some so-called sound-daemon.
(you can check which programs are using the soundcard with fuser or lsof but most often a
# killall esd ; killall artsd
before starting Cube will clear the SDL parachute error)

#3992: Re: XBOX port please

by D.plomat on 02/08/2005 10:34, refers to #3976

Totally agree too about the mouse.

I wonder if there's some way to connect a mouse to an XBox, as it's basically a stripped-down PC? (are there USB?)

About bringing opensource games to the console worlds, i think it'd have a positive impact: many of those users don't know about most of free games, so it's more likely to make people come from the console world to the free world than have people abandon their PC to a console. Plus that would make more internet players available. Indeed, the drawback is that we'd more often require the "english to 12yr/old AOLer translator" ;)

#3993: create a server with instagib and in LAN

by Tyrouyl on 02/08/2005 10:57

Hello

I want to create a server with instagib mod and only on my network (without registration on master s3rv3r). How can I do ?

I'm under Win XP

I tried to put this in server.bat but it doesn't work :
bin\cube.exe -mlocalhost -mode 4 -d %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

Thanks :)

you can´t force the gamemode.
just vote for mode 4. Or go /insta whatevermap
when you´re alone on the server and when ppl join, mode will be insta.

uhm sorry
not vote for mode 4
do /mode 4 before you vote or vote by menu.

reply to this message

#3996: Yep.

by Pxtl on 02/08/2005 17:14

Speaking of which, can someone explain to me why you don't vote for mode? I've played on numerous servers where players have switched the mode when suggesting their vote, but the vote failed, so the next random map progresses in the new game mode regardless of appropriateness. For example, Tactics is awesome fun on a map like Plagiat, but fscking awful on a big map like Matador - and I've seen cases where a vote for "tactics on plagiat" has failed and we've ended up getting stuck playing tactics on some non-tactics-y map. Its even worse with InstaFist.

I don´t know myself, it seems that the mode of the majority of players affects the nex map. Like if you start on an empty server and change to instagib, and 2 poeple will join from ffa, next mode will be ffa, even if noone voted at all.

reply to this message

#3998: Nope.

by Pxtl on 02/08/2005 18:46

One time I changed the game mode myself to the esoteric instafist mode on a crowded server just to see how it played with a lot of people. I doubt anyone else was set on that mode.

#4000: Cube FAQ

by D.plomat on 02/09/2005 02:46

First version available here:

http://www.chez.com/dplomat/cube/cube_faq.html

Or from the first link of my main Cube page.

Still some #TODOs but i think it can already have some use.

Any suggestions welcome, like new questions, specially about mapping (long-time mappers have ideas of things that should be added?), or if some spelling/sentences errors/bad constructions as my english isn't perfect.

asking to the community:

-Any RedHat/Mandrake user to write a quick install procedure for those distros.

-If someone still has the old mod "Raiden" (i might have it on one of my machines but not sure) for the sake of completeness.

@JCDPC: i was on holidays when Fragger was out, and now the link seems down, is there any other link? (if not, then i'd like to know the size of the download so i either give you an e-mail with enough space, or open an FTP account on my machine)

-and if i've missed one mod, then let me know ;)

#4002: Re: Can't start game in Fedora Core 3

by markdrew on 02/09/2005 03:07, refers to #3991

No joy.

$ killall esd ; killall artsd
esd: no process killed
artsd: no process killed
[cube]$ export MALLOC_CHECK_=0
[cube]$ ./cube_unix
init: sdl
...
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

I.e., same results. Also,

# ps -ef | grep -i esd
# ps -ef | grep -i artsd

yielded nothing of interest.

I tried to use fuser, but I'm not sure how to tell which device to check:

[~]# fuser /dev/sound
[~]# fuser /dev/audio
[~]# fuser /dev/adsp
< no output from any of these >

Is there an SDL log somewhere from which I can get more details about this error?

Thanks for all your help so far!

Mark

#4003: Cube crash after 1min

by Neeko on 02/09/2005 08:40

Hi there,
I can fire up cube fine. But then after about a minute or so it crashes - it maxes out the cpu 95-97%, the music track still plays fine. I can switch to console login and kill the games process (linux_client).
Some specs:
Celeron 2.4ghz, 768mb DDR 400, nVidia FX5200, Yoper linux (2.6.8 kernel, KDE 3.3).
Can anyone give me a clue here - I'd really like to play it longer than a minute at a time :)

Thanks
N

...then i don't see what can cause this, maybe some permissions problem, you should try to open an X session as root and then launch Cube as root to check this.

Unfortunately SDL isn't very verbose on this, maybe someone knows how to make it more verbose/generate a log?

Also you can try to unload the ALSA/OSS modules to have your box appear as if it hasn't a soundcard at all, to check if this issue is really sound-related.

If it is, i might give you a modified version of the binary with many printfs in the sound section to dig more, but that won't be for this week as i'll be very busy.

About a core dump, that won't probably help, as Aard(Cube developer) uses VC++, and it's another person (eihrul) that compiles the Linux version.

Another thing might be some library problem, you should try to compile Cube from source, and see if the source version works better/gives more details about the error, but that's very unlikely.
