November release plans...

by eihrul on 10/30/2012 09:57, 134 messages, last message: 01/05/2013 09:49, 104655 views, last view: 04/28/2024 20:59

So, I'd like to get the party started so we can have a new release out the door by the end of November.

To that end:

Mappers - <emphasis!!!>FINISH YOUR MAPS AND PUT THEM ON QUADROPOLIS A.S.A.P. SO YOU CAN GET FEEDBACK AND FIX PROBLEMS.</emphasis!!!> I don't want to include broken or unfinished maps in the release. So if you have dreams of getting a map in the release, hurry it up.

Brave players - test the SVN stuff (requires compilation). Make sure nothing is horribly broken so that people don't have to experience horrible breakiness have the release.

As others already stated, ideas are welcome, as long as there is a decent planning behind it (which often isn't the case).

About the fact that other people than eihrul tell what will be usefull for sauerbraten and what not; we actually can't as we can read eihrul's mind. But next to that, we can understand his vision. And think about this: if eihrul would check out everyone's comment and even reply to it, he wouldn't have time to even add such ideas within sauerbraten.

@Zamwa: We're not talking about extensive mods, we're talking about sorting maps in alphabetical order and taking the code from assassin edition to show players on the radar.

@Suicizer: (a) is not important due to (b) and (c) where you agree with me. You got me wrong with (d). I was saying people might only use the player radar and play without the other cheats. You'll notice this even harder than a wallhack.

You said it yourself: Eihrul can judge for himself. He also knows the code is already there. Be it from the mod or be it from assassin edition. But let me ask you this, Suicizer: How would a teammate radar hurt YOU? After all it is you who is fighting it here. Eihrul already knows of the suggestion, I was simply giviing more reasons for a radar. And I wasn't ranting "game sucks, do this or I quit yada yada", so you have no reason to defend the developer. If you would like to have a radar in the game yourself, simply say "+1", if you don't care, say nothing, if you don't want it, say why. But you don't have to do the argueing for eihrul, except:

@Raz, Sui: I know you guys have been turned down with many of your suggestions in the past. Personally, I don't remember that any of you made a useful suggestion which would be good for the players. But it wouldn't have come to my mind to tell you your suggestions were useless. It really just feels like you're talking everything down because your own ideas didn't get included and that's why you don't want others' ideas included.

Now, it seems like there are 2 morons (Honzik and me, no offense) on the one side and 2 other morons (Raz and Sui, no offense) on the other side. But in reality, 100% of the players either are indifferent about teammate radar (or alphabetical maps), are pro teammate radar or already have teammate radar.

@eihrul: No reason to read the above. It's ok. You're coding it, you are responsible, you must know what your vision is but you also know the reasons speaking for some tweaks. I'm opening a new bottle of wine and salute you!

Player radar will hurt Me very bad cause I like to camp alone and not be discovered!

I actually can't remember any idea which I suggested to eihrul, except collect-deathmatch.
Anyway, I doubt Raz and I would be turning ideas down becauseourswould have failed. It's just a matter of respect to eihrul not to ask for stuff to implement, unless he is asking the community.

So you are suggesting you can be so annoying your own teammates will try to kill you?

No, My teammates steal My hiding spots and shoot blindly at the enemy! I try to shoot the enemy in the back so they never know where the shot came from! :"3

Yeah, this is a common thing...
But in all seriousness, a team only radar wouldn't hurt the game in any way...and seeing as it takes nearly a year or more to get new releases, I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't (or shouldn't...not going to forget that sh*t happens IRL) take that long to program it into the game.

I always wanted to see little "X" marks near where my teammate had died so I would run over there and find who did it instead of getting TK'd because I ran over and someone else was already shooting and BLAMO...

Maybe start a feature request thread somewhere else, this thread is supposed to be about a pending release - a call to arms for mappers and bug finders...

I actually wonder, would sauerbraten run on windows 8? And if not, would thence release do so?

Built with Visual Studio on Win7 and played the Kopenhagen and Turbulence maps (instagib team with bots). All gfx cranked up. Works great, thank you!

I did it with the SVN code and it can easily be applied to the official release, contact me over email (cristi.vlasceanu@gmail.com) and I'll send you the code. I made it so that it shows players that are not at the same level height (within some margin) with you show in pink and light blue.

One interesting thing I noticed is that the minimap may show completely black for maps such as Thor that have a "roof" and the birds'eye view when the minimap texture is built is up on the outside. I have fixed that as well with some cheesy collision detection.

#34: Ignorant Map Pre-release Questions!

by The MUSEman on 11/10/2012 03:42

I've created a multiplayer map using Justice version that I'm happy with and want to release... but I have a few dumb questions first:
(1) As you're about to release a new version, are maps made with "Justice" now obsolete / suboptimum / unimpressive?
(2) How big is "too big" a map? Mine's 20.9MB + 3 MB custom textures + 50MB custom models. (It might be a bit too detailed ;-)
(3) Some minor areas of my map run 40fps on a GeForce 512MB card - too slow?
(3) Release license(s): What is typical policy on this? GPL? Creative Common? Other? I don't mind others making derivative works, as long as they really are.

Sorry for being a PITA - but, rather ask first than suffer flames later ;-)

Screenshots here for the curious, and these just scratch the surface: http://unsolicited.elementfx.com/cube2/galcubeataotg.html

If I get feedback, can put the level up on Quadropolis by Monday PM for you to try out.

Many thanks in advance!

The MUSEman

1) not really, but maps saved in the svn both are superior in wtr count and chances of having fewer lighting errors compared to justice.

2) That's a bit too big, i don't think he'd be willing to implement roughly 75MB of content just for one map.

3) minor areas? then shiver me timbers with an overview.

4) pretty much whatever licence you want, so long as you give sauerbraten the right to use it. personally i prefer CC-BY-SA.

You could upload the map to quadro, albeit as artistic since it's likely too big and heavy to be playable by many people. As a sidenote, you'd have to upload all of the files elsewhere due to limitations and link them instead. As as second sidenote, if you don't have an account, talk to me on IRC (irc.quakenet.org #sauerbraten) so i can get you one.

#36: License

by oibaf on 11/10/2012 11:07

It would be nice to have some content in CC-BY-SA 3.0+ or GPL, so that distribution can package it in their main archives (e.g. Debian is in non-free: http://packages.debian.org/source/sid/sauerbraten-data ).

Is there any other GPL/CC-BY-SA content, enough to make a separate package?

#37: Re: License

by eihrul on 11/10/2012 11:15, refers to #36

This is silly. Because Sauerbraten is not an engine, it is a game. If you're packaging it using other content for it than the actual Sauerbraten, you're not packaging Sauerbraten, you're packaging some other game. It's either Sauerbraten, or it is not. You won't be able to play on Sauer servers because of incompatible maps, etc. Again, silly, makes no sense.

#38: Re: License

by oibaf on 11/10/2012 13:23

There is already a free map packaged in Debian:
http://packages.debian.org/source/sid/sauerbraten-wake6

But it's not enough to make the sauerbraten engine usable, see here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=458800

(About the name, it could use a different one indeed, if that happens)

#39: Re: License

Yeah and having a silly non-release-quality map nobody else has does absolutely no good and somehow gives the impression you can just go around the entire Sauerbraten community do just do whatever you want in the name of that community. It sets a bad precedent.

I am not even sure I am sold on the idea that distro package repos are the right way for distributing large, version-sensitive games like Sauer or others. It doesn't make any sense, especially with the CD distribution model: what good is it that you have an outdated copy of the game? And Sauer depends on network connectivity anyway, so if you don't have good enough network connectivity to download from the non-free repo, it is unlikely you're going to be getting much out of Sauer anyway, aside from some bot matches.

Many thanks for the reply, and for the helpful comments :-)

(1) I spent a bit of time on the lights, so I hope they're adequate. As for wtr, I'm guessing there's a way to check it so I will (and then probably reach for aspirin ;-)
(2) Too big? Thought so... not a big deal ;-)
(3) Overview? After I review CC License I'll most likely upload it to my website (I've got at least 1GB available, more if I need it, says my server admin ;-)

BTW: Noticed about 40 hits on the screenshot gallery from many people - thanks for looking! But, no comments: Was it that bad / good / meh? Just curious.

Thanks again! The MUSEman
