November release plans...

by eihrul on 10/30/2012 09:57, 134 messages, last message: 01/05/2013 09:49, 105171 views, last view: 05/14/2024 03:37

So, I'd like to get the party started so we can have a new release out the door by the end of November.

To that end:

Mappers - <emphasis!!!>FINISH YOUR MAPS AND PUT THEM ON QUADROPOLIS A.S.A.P. SO YOU CAN GET FEEDBACK AND FIX PROBLEMS.</emphasis!!!> I don't want to include broken or unfinished maps in the release. So if you have dreams of getting a map in the release, hurry it up.

Brave players - test the SVN stuff (requires compilation). Make sure nothing is horribly broken so that people don't have to experience horrible breakiness have the release.

From the screenshots I can tell you spent much time on the map and there are some areas which look gorgeous (others... not so much). I suppose though that (a) the map is way too big and (b) it is not homogeneous. I'd suggest to make a map with reasonable size next time which has a fitting overall look and feel, or theme, respectively. Your mapping skills seem to be good enough for release quality maps, you just need to make one :)

Hansbert:

Thanks for the feedback - I completely agree! Map's pretty cramped in places as I didn't start with a large enough map. In hindsight, I probably should have picked one concept (say, a powerplant, or the state capitol) and built a map focused just on that ;-)

Was all set to put the link up, but worried about hitting a "Resource Limit" if everyone downloaded the file simultaneously (host has a zero-tolerance policy, *any* TOS violation = ban). Emailed my admin, when I hear back I'll post, couple days at most ;-)

Thanks for your patience, and to everyone who viewed the screenshots.

The MUSEman.

You can upload it to a free file hoster like mediafire, putlocker and the like. No reason to worry about bandwidth usage then.

Hi! I agree with Hansbert about the map not being homogenous and too big.
Besides that, I only see more or less cubic architecture filled with mapmodels, mapmodels and mapmodels.
Where are the items? Bases? Flags? Just because you said, it's supposed to be multiplayer.

GeForce 512MB? I wonder if my intel card can handle that...
Screenshots are nice, really nice, I like them!
Please upload map somewhere people can download it ASAP. Can't wait for it already! Love enormous-sized maps, too bad Red abandoned his NYC map project and left without a trace.

That was reply to #34, sorry for double post.
Also, an idea about the upcoming release: map repository. Idea is that you can install a map with something like that:
~$ sauermaps install <map_name>
(and list, and read description, and view screenshots, etc.)
So there won't be a need to make sauerbraten package weigh a lot.

In b4 eihrul does not want such thing

#50: "Actiontown!" MP map now available.

Here's the description:

...and the download link:

http://unsolicited.elementfx.com/cube2/atown_mpV1.zip

Right now I've selected CC-(BY-NC-ND)3.0 license - can always "loosen" it later.

Enjoy! (and, feedback appreciated ;-)

I've got out of memory and sauerbraten got killed... so sad.
Gonna try out the map at the another machine in a while!
But let me say about packaging: ZIP archive must be ready to be unzipped right in ~/.sauerbraten/ directory.
So, you make the following structure:
+ <archive.zip>
|- map_readme.txt
`-+ packages/
|-+ base/
| |- map.ogz
| |- map.cfg
| `- map.jpeg
|-+ textures/
| `...
|-+ models/
| `...
`...
Also, remove all those __MACOSX* and .DS_Store files — they are not really needed for the map.
Anyway, the screenshots are nice, can't wait to try out the map!

@aiueo:

Thanks for the helpful comments :-)

Sorry about that - now I know! (Leaving the Mac files in was my fault, though, only use Win a couple times a year ;-)

Will re-package and upload new zip tomorrow.

(no, not really... I've had CEOs flame me in person, no biggie)

But, thanks for being honest :-)

Instead of hijacking this topic, make your own on quadropolis please.

Sauerbraten has been able to read zips for a while now - check out the documentation. Helps to avoid the mess of multiple uncompressed crud mixed together.

E-e-eh? Really!? That's great!
I was unable to find anything on loading maps from ZIPs in game tutorial for the latest release, though.

addzip and removezip, fine thing. Simply put the zip into the Sauerbraten root directory, put addzip NAME (without ending) into the autoexec, et voila - the files are added 1:1 into your game as if you had unpacked it.

When you don't want to use the download anymore, simply removezip NAME it and delete the zipfile. No need to pick every file by hand as you had by manual unpacking.
