Sauerbraten and windows vista

by WILDBEAST on 03/12/2007 04:29, 67 messages, last message: 04/21/2007 19:03, 28559 views, last view: 05/05/2024 19:39

I've been running windows vista and sauerbraten runs at 14 frames per second, where it used to run at 70. I can play other 3d games (Nexuiz, Counterstrike) and only lose ~5 frames per second. Also, if any kind of explosion happens the game crashes. I don't know if there's someway to get it to work... but it's kind of a shame.

doesnt the vista aero 3d thingybob require 1gb of ram to be activated, else it just reverts to the non-3d interface?

well you need home premium.... i don't know i don't use vista personally (xp and linux ftw!!!) but you need a good graphics card for it and 1gb of ram is very good (i wouldn't even try using vista without 1gb)

(running Vista)
cmd.exe appears
sauerbraten engine appears at the bottom.
I click on it and I see a resolution change; I also hear repetitive metal music (good and good). However, I don't see anything that looks like Sauerbraten, just my usual windows.

Vista has no 3D-interface, what you see is a simple 2D-matrix. Only Compiz/Beryl, which run on Open-GL, support true 3D so far.

post 51: Did you install video card drivers, or are you trying to use the default Vista drivers that totally lack opengl support? ( hint-hint )

post 52: I could not care less if my damn desktop is running in hardware mode...I actually hate the idea. 2 or 3 years down the road when I finally do buy Vista, I'll be disabling all that crap. I don't care if I have enough pc power to run a 3d desktop, as the very idea is simply DUMB, and a waste of pc power, imho.

The desktop being pretty has no effect on anything, aside from eating resources. I get a kick out of people that post screenies of desktops " oooh look at my pretty desktop "...what a silly idea. All a desktop/gui should be is a simple way to get to work or games. I don't want to see pretty shadows under menus and icons.

The first "pretty desktops" I remember seeing, were screenies of linux gui's...is that ironic, or what? Oh, and no I'm not saying MS stole linux/osx ideas. Saying MS steals linux or osx features is like saying every 1st person shooter game stole from each other....silly talk.

Fuck... nice new core 2 duo rig with a video card that should chew right through Sauerbraten.

I'm forcing myself to use Vista on this system for a while because I have to get more familiar with it (soon I'll be getting calls to fix crap in it).

I am getting around 60 FPS, in every map even reducing shaderdetail. That absolutely bites the royal weenie. I get probably twice that on average on my old system (running Sauerbraten under Linux with the Nvidia drivers).

Here, in Vista, it feels like trying to piss kidney stones through a priapism.

Vista Ultimate Disappointment Edition.

Whatever they did that crippled OpenGL functionality earns them a special place right in the middle of my arse.

Sigh... I guess I'll have to repartition and set up a dual boot with Linux. I was going to wait.

I'd be happy if I were you - whenever someone with an OpenGL issue calls, you'll simply explain that it's not well supported on Vista and recommend XP. And since no one will go back to XP, they'll never call you again.. that will be your job from now on :)

you could also have vsync on...it will limit the fps to the refresh rate of your monitor, which might be set at 60-65hz. There's no point in increasing the fps anyway...over 50 the human eye can not detect any diff. 12 = animation, 25 = smooth animation, 36 = nice, 50+ = woohoo

The motion was smooth, but slower, and FPS does indeed matter when everyone else is jumping around and able to aim and shoot. That's what I thought too until I started playing games online. I was getting creamed in games like call of duty 2 at 50 fps even though I perceived my motion as smooth and fast. (I had to reduce graphics settings on my old system) It's more than what my eye perceives.

Especially when you're used to playing sauer with 100 to 150 fps.

Thanks mitto, it was somehow defaulting to using vsync. I thought of that too last night but didn't see a setting anywhere in the configs so ruled it out. Fooled me, because I saw 69 and 70 fps in a few places briefly so I figured that wasn't it.

However, after what you said, I forced vsync to disabled (it was application controlled) in the nvidia control panel and now I'm getting 199 fps (the default maxfps limit of 200)

The Acer LCD display's vertical refresh rate is fixed to 60 Hz when used on the DVI port. 75 if I use analog, but digital is better if for no other reason than it automatically adjusts perfectly. The concept of "vsync" is the only reason refresh rate matters on a LCD and none of my other games default to on. There's no flicker.

I have a new Viewsonic on order with 2 ms reaction times (well... not really 2 ms for all pixel changes, it's measured from white to black and white to grey) which should be better than my existing 8 ms acer for gaming.

Damn, I was enjoying blaming Vista for this (I do so dislike it) but I'm glad to have this solved :-)

Hmm, I made a reply here earlier today and it seems to have disappeared. I basically said:

Mitto_mors, thank you. It was vertical sync. I didn't realize that Sauerbraten defaulted to using that if enabled by the driver. (didn't see any settings for it in the config... I did think of it last night but it was displaying 69 and 70 fps in a few spots and it didn't seem like vsync)

Anyway, it was "application controlled" and I changed it to force vsync to off in the nvidia control panel and now I'm getting 199 fps (the default maxfps value of 200)

Oh well, I guess I can't blame Vista for this one. While I don't care for Vista, my gaming is pretty good. So far, call of duty 2, quake4 and now sauerbraten all work admirably.

I thought framerate didn't matter either at one time, as long as motion was smooth. However, I learned that FPS was important in multiplayer games. Regardless of what my eyes perceive, fps is important for aiming quickly and shooting.

mitto_mors, TV looks fine at 25FPS because it has motion blur. Open Sauerbraten, set maxfps to 25, and tell me if you're competitive online.

you're welcome for the help grogan :) anytime. I get about 55-60fps and i usually am number 1-3 in a room of 8-16 people online lol.

It's a lot more important to have good connection to the server you're playing on. This is pvp rule number 1. Fps may be important too, I don't play Sauer and other fps games online.. and perhaps that's why I don't see how more than 25 fps will make a difference :)

by MeatROme on 04/21/2007 14:41, refers to #66

physics are frame dependant, more frames, smoother physics ... it can get so bad some jumps become impossible at low frame rates
