Sauerbraten and windows vista

by WILDBEAST on 03/12/2007 04:29, 67 messages, last message: 04/21/2007 19:03, 28603 views, last view: 05/19/2024 00:00

I've been running windows vista and sauerbraten runs at 14 frames per second, where it used to run at 70. I can play other 3d games (Nexuiz, Counterstrike) and only lose ~5 frames per second. Also, if any kind of explosion happens the game crashes. I don't know if there's someway to get it to work... but it's kind of a shame.

#42: Who gives a f...uck?

by Rasputin [NOR] on 03/28/2007 20:08

Come on guys... who gives a f...fuck? I don't care if you live or die, I dont't care if you're t-shirts are all black, I don't care if you even survive the day, I don't care if you even exist.

All I want is to frag you in Sauer. F...uck all your problems. If you're a real c...unt, you will loose anyway - if you're good, you'll win =)

Manual? Manual?! Windows has a manual?!!

Mine came with instructions on how to activate it.. and thats about it (probably because its an OEM product).

Anyway I'm about to take the plunge with Beryl, yippe.

1: it's not on by default because it makes slower computers shit themselves

2: windows has a manual. It's called microsoft.com, and it's VERY well documented. everything you would ever want to know about windows is on there (somewhere)

I'll be honest, when I booted back into Windows the other day it was like coming home after a long overseas trip.

doesnt the vista aero 3d thingybob require 1gb of ram to be activated, else it just reverts to the non-3d interface?

well you need home premium.... i don't know i don't use vista personally (xp and linux ftw!!!) but you need a good graphics card for it and 1gb of ram is very good (i wouldn't even try using vista without 1gb)

(running Vista)
cmd.exe appears
sauerbraten engine appears at the bottom.
I click on it and I see a resolution change; I also hear repetitive metal music (good and good). However, I don't see anything that looks like Sauerbraten, just my usual windows.

Vista has no 3D-interface, what you see is a simple 2D-matrix. Only Compiz/Beryl, which run on Open-GL, support true 3D so far.

post 51: Did you install video card drivers, or are you trying to use the default Vista drivers that totally lack opengl support? ( hint-hint )

post 52: I could not care less if my damn desktop is running in hardware mode...I actually hate the idea. 2 or 3 years down the road when I finally do buy Vista, I'll be disabling all that crap. I don't care if I have enough pc power to run a 3d desktop, as the very idea is simply DUMB, and a waste of pc power, imho.

The desktop being pretty has no effect on anything, aside from eating resources. I get a kick out of people that post screenies of desktops " oooh look at my pretty desktop "...what a silly idea. All a desktop/gui should be is a simple way to get to work or games. I don't want to see pretty shadows under menus and icons.

The first "pretty desktops" I remember seeing, were screenies of linux gui's...is that ironic, or what? Oh, and no I'm not saying MS stole linux/osx ideas. Saying MS steals linux or osx features is like saying every 1st person shooter game stole from each other....silly talk.

Fuck... nice new core 2 duo rig with a video card that should chew right through Sauerbraten.

I'm forcing myself to use Vista on this system for a while because I have to get more familiar with it (soon I'll be getting calls to fix crap in it).

I am getting around 60 FPS, in every map even reducing shaderdetail. That absolutely bites the royal weenie. I get probably twice that on average on my old system (running Sauerbraten under Linux with the Nvidia drivers).

Here, in Vista, it feels like trying to piss kidney stones through a priapism.

Vista Ultimate Disappointment Edition.

Whatever they did that crippled OpenGL functionality earns them a special place right in the middle of my arse.

Sigh... I guess I'll have to repartition and set up a dual boot with Linux. I was going to wait.

I'd be happy if I were you - whenever someone with an OpenGL issue calls, you'll simply explain that it's not well supported on Vista and recommend XP. And since no one will go back to XP, they'll never call you again.. that will be your job from now on :)

you could also have vsync on...it will limit the fps to the refresh rate of your monitor, which might be set at 60-65hz. There's no point in increasing the fps anyway...over 50 the human eye can not detect any diff. 12 = animation, 25 = smooth animation, 36 = nice, 50+ = woohoo
