Sauerbraten and windows vista

by WILDBEAST on 03/12/2007 04:29, 67 messages, last message: 04/21/2007 19:03, 28600 views, last view: 05/18/2024 13:27

I've been running windows vista and sauerbraten runs at 14 frames per second, where it used to run at 70. I can play other 3d games (Nexuiz, Counterstrike) and only lose ~5 frames per second. Also, if any kind of explosion happens the game crashes. I don't know if there's someway to get it to work... but it's kind of a shame.

Mac OS X requires just as much RAM as Vista does otherwise it ends up thrashing about using swap, but atleast it won't decide to revoke your hardware drivers if it thinks you might be doing something suspicious.

That is hilarious, I have a free upgrade to Vista, and I run Sauerbraten on FULL detail at 25 fps on Thor, I only have 512mb Ram and I was told I need more. Wow I think I'll just stick with XP till there are games that require Vista. That's terrible though, loss of 5 fps? Wow. I know my bro tried to play on 12, and that was bad. Just wait Direct X 10 will be ported to work on XP, because true gamers are afraid of all of Vista's issues. Reminds me of when XP got released, there were all sorts of rumors about how they track your drivers, and require internet access, and can remotely reformat your harddrive. Just plain hilarious.

sorry, but no one here is afraid of Vista, it just sucks with games right now. A computer that sells with 512mb ram (me cries) probably only comes with a free upgrade to Home Basic. the person that posts this topic, most likely has Premium with the snazzy Aero stuff turned on. And microsoft has said that DirectX 10 will NOT be ported to XP. We can all just have fun with buying 200 dollars of Vista and 600 dollars of a new graphics card.

Everything bad said about Vista now was said about Windows XP back in 2002. There's absolutely nothing new about this.

I'd be tempted to say the same thing.. but..

XP might have integrated IE into the OS, but Vista is integrating DRM. DRM = bad, at least in the way its been implemented in Vista.

I don't know the full scope of it, but I've already heard about the non-signed driver stuff, and the number of legal copies of Vista being branded as illegal by the Genuine Advantage Checker.

And to top it all off, I installed Ubuntu. You know what? My wireless doesn't work properly all the time, but its just so awesome, fast and productive that I can't say no to booting into it.

I agree. Everyone thinks the new MS OS'es are always the root of all evil, and will ruin ganing and pc's in general....a couple years later those same people are all running said OS, becuase despite what most linux users will admit about it, MS is a gamers way to go....unless you're happy with a few freeware games, and maybe 5% of all commercial games that run on linux.

I hate the idea of Vista, but I hated the idea of Winxp too. I'll run winxp until I buy a game that needs Vista. I'll buy Vista just to be able to play new games. To feed your devil some more, I might even buy an MS game while I'm at it.

And the funny thing is, when i got openSUSE 10.2, Sauerbraten run at 24fps on 1280x1024 and on Windows XP it runs a 3-5 FPS at 1280x1024....

That isn't a fair comparison.

You can't directly compare the performance of games under Linux compared to Windows.

Linux for one has far less stable and developed drivers, while Windows by default runs a lot of crap that will slow down your game.

And if you've got such an extreme difference like that, then obviously theres something wrong with how you've setup your Windows install.

Uhh, Windows has had IE integrated into the OS since 98 and probably earlier (IIRC Windows 95 Plus!, an expansion pack of sorts to 95, added the "feature" in). As for DRM and WGA, that stuff's going to be sorted out in due time. I'm gonna wait on Vista until it gets to SP1, buying it right now would just be foolish.

Its called ClearType fonts under Windows, and extremely necessary to stop your eyes from popping out if you've got an LCD monitor.

Manual? Manual?! Windows has a manual?!!

Mine came with instructions on how to activate it.. and thats about it (probably because its an OEM product).

Anyway I'm about to take the plunge with Beryl, yippe.

1: it's not on by default because it makes slower computers shit themselves

2: windows has a manual. It's called microsoft.com, and it's VERY well documented. everything you would ever want to know about windows is on there (somewhere)

I'll be honest, when I booted back into Windows the other day it was like coming home after a long overseas trip.
