What about Redhat? I have a 12 year old brother whom I purhcased Redhat for about a year ago, and he has yet to complain about it not being "mature" or any such synonym. And this is the kid that hands me my arse in Cube and Sauer, and made several of the CL maps.

I find that making generalizations about Linux, particularly in this community, is kinda dangerous. There are tons of people here who use Linux for it's better performance and don't seem to run into problems, probably stemming from the fact that they read the readme (which, btw, is named as such not just for Linux... funy how "readme" seems to have lost its self-explainatory meaning.)

> linux is years behind windows

erm...
linux has had great features since it was " a twinkle in Linus' eye ". Features that are only just coming into the next version of windows. windows doesnt even include a proper firewall by default!
and your generalisations about linux is not really fair. Linux can cater for all computing tasks. Also, lets not forget about the other OSes, osx ( ;) passa), Solaris, now free, *BSD. ok, these may not have such a wide range of uses as linux but they are all strong OSes. Some ppl take the piss outta linux when they havent even tried it! there is a LOT of crap about linux and other oses out there on the web and from the mouths of certain ppl... dont take it all at face value.

Just to clarify what Boot Camp is (since I am using OS X and have it installed), it is a simple system set up by Apple to allow Windows to dual-boot with MacOS on Apple hardware. If I had a copy of Windows, I'd be using OS X and Windows on the same computer. I have already installed Ubuntu Linux, which I am very happy with, alongside OS X.

By the way, I'm now using an Intel iMac 17" with 1.83 GHz processor, 512 mb ram, and an ATI X1600 graphics card with 128mb vram. It's wonderful.

Anyone who doubts Linux' power should visit:

The internet was built so nerds could argue about oses, editors, and star trek. Any other use is just a happy accident.

and pr0n! a special kind of accident happened with that (was DARPA planning to turn all it's enemies into wankers?)

oh yeah, i should post on topic for once. :)
I use gmail's on-page chat (that is to say, I have a permanent "leave me alone" on gmail's chat feature).

When windows compleatly dies and I have to reinstall it I get so incredibly pissed off. Out of the box, the only use I can make out of windows is.... damn I cant even think of one. first thing I do is go and download firefox (and watch the download fail the first few times in IE) and then download all of the programs I use. I would say a good 95% of them are utilities and doodads originally written for *NIX. Three weeks later the cycle repeats.

Meanwhile I have Gentoo Linux installed on another few partitions of my hard drive. This has remained stable since the day I installed it 6 months ago and it all happed at no cost at all to me. All of the software installed in this OS is free and OpenSource except for a few games and limewire. When there are problems, they are usually caused by the user (and if the user has the slightest idea what the're doing, the'll know what they did or at least what is acting up so they can fix it.)

Linux itself is only the kernel of the operating system, you could have a Linux based Operating system in under 10 megabytes, and they have been fit onto bootable floppys with enough functionality to connect to the internet. Since it's opensource, it goes alot of places and is used for a lot of tasks you couldnt dream of using windows for.

My ranting isnt solving much so I'll just make one more quick point: UNIX ftw w00t :P

Okay, you're trying to stop a flamewar, yet you can't help but throw in a flame of your own. There's a word for that: hypocrite. Also, your flame is completely untrue, so I'm hoping you're just exaggurating.

Mhh.
I was already worried that I step on some
gentoo'lers feet :)
Just want to say that nobody is interested
in OS-Topics (at least not in an IM-thread).
The Gentoo-thing is just an example because
there are *really* many people out there who
think so ("Wow, Im uber-l33t"). Thats definitely
not untrue (> search different Forums).

Move that post to the "OS wars" thread and we can debate it; otherwise, yeah, it's off-topic. Thanks.
