Sauerbraten 2006-02-27 release

by Aardappel_ on 02/27/2006 10:31, 98 messages, last message: 08/26/2006 00:09, 73849 views, last view: 05/05/2024 21:49

A new release! get it from:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=102911

The changelog:

# added Fanatic's new soundtrack! 15 2 minute tracks, played at random in sequence (they were meant to "connect"), an endlessly varying song! :)
# experimental gameplay feature: the health boost / megahealth now only gives you +10, except it is permanent to your maxhealth for this game, as opposed to just health.
# experimental forward push on jump. Let me know if this is cool..
# text particles can now be any size, and now show the player's name permanently in 3d as well as any chat
# made T default key for multiplayer chat again, Y is now default for texture edits.
# frags now persist across disconnects
# fixed hellpig bounding sphere
# added menu page scrolling
# "sleep" command now supports multiple timers
# "music" command can now execute commands when a song is done playing
# optimized material rendering by grouping into larger surfaces (toggled by "optmats" var)
# many tiny tweaks to the multiplayer gameplay
# "maxfps" var for limiting fps
# "showmat" var for rendering invisible materials and selecting materials in edit mode
# edited cubes default to fullbright until calclight/patchlight
# added coopedit support back in | no map uploading yet...
# rewrote physics to be closer to the original Cube physics

I will make seperate threads for each new release from now on. It'd be good to have discussion on specific releases in seperate threads.

Enjoy!

Damn. I hadn't thought of that. It certainly wasn't my intention to cheat or sabotage any of your work, but you have a very good point. The ranking system will have to go, then.

Would it be okay to distribute the modified binary then, for the client that would be able to connect to the game with ranking, or nay?

That would be useful, then a ranking system could stay, but users would have to get the modded client to play it.

I suppose a central repository of servers that aren't on the masterserver (presuming they'd be removed from the masterserver - that may not be, please inform) would be useful for that, and a single ID for playing modded servers perhaps.

I believe that's the case. If you mod the server, you should provide a modded client with a different protocol ID so as not to impersonate an "official" Sauerbraten game.

That really wouldn't suit me, which is why I'm just dropping the whole thing. I don't want to play in a "mod" sandbox--I'd rather provide a shared resource for the whole community.

Well, that's why I asked if it would still be on the main server list, that would alleviate it.

Heck, even better if there was as part of official sauerbraten a real official and 'mod client' (same thing but with a fixed protocol ID).

Then it would be more like a mod-beach.

Is the 1v1 going to be like the Rocket arena mod?

that was one of my favorite mods :)

Although you'd have to call it something other than mod to not confuse to completely external mods since it's more of a tweaking thing.

I think that's an excellent idea.

If the server had a console like that of the quake 3 server, modifications like aphid's could be made without changing the source of the server. I might go look into how hard that'd be to accomplish, since it'd also allow the server operator more control.

bug reports should now go in these specific version threads?

there are several issues with coopedit mode.

changing from coopedit to a non-editing normal game, wont switch you out of editmode if you were editing.

also i think i was in local edit mode during a coopedit game, and then joined another server and was still in editing mode even tho everyone else on the map could only play.

on killfactory, the bottom Boost and green armour are both about impossible for me to get without using a gun-kickback-jump.

the steeper the angles of walls, the weirder your guy moves/warps around.

on AARD3,

there is a spot on the map where you can get hung up. completely frozen motionless.
go to the spot with the 2 chaingun
ammo boxes. avoid the nearby teleport.
travel around the outside level, where it opens up into open-air on your right over a low wall.
before getting too close to the rocket pack with the 2 health packs at the corner, hold LEFTSTRAFE and scrape the left wall while pushing forward also.

theres also a spot where you will go backwards while pressing forwards.
go into that little hall/alcove where the yellow armour is....now turn back towards the main part of the level.
look at the steps...there are 3 levels, joined by a middle step....get on the middle step....
turn MOSTLY to the right against the wall, but also so forward is pushing you slowly up the stairs, back towards the main/middle part of the arena.....
you will actually be moving BACKWARDS down the stair, as long as you are scraping that right wall.

aphid, the fact is that you can do what you want with your server and aard wont be able to stop you. I loved the ranking system, i just thought it could be made better than it is now.
I was shocked when i connected to your server and found all the rankings and "the oracle" was gone!

---quote-----------------------
Changing server or client for the official game is considered cheating/sabotaging, irrespective of your intentions.
--------------------------------

not to be rude aard, but if aphid wants to add a personal flare to his server then why not? if it doesnt make the game unfair and to the client everything still works as it should, then why not? anyway if someone believes it is wrong what aphid has done to the server code, then s/he can play on another server.

on the net, legality means shit? what planet are you from? just because it is easy to stay under the radar for most people doesn't mean you are free to do whatever, people have been jailed for what they did on the net.

I *could* sue aphid, you're just relying on the fact that I won't. And of course I won't. But that doesn't make it right nor legal.

And though his mod is fairly non-intrusive, it is the principle of it that people are modifying the way I want to see MY game, without my permission. You can only legally do this to your OWN game.

Um, that\'s not *strictly* true.

I mean the bit about Aphid doing something illegal, not about legality meaning nothing on the \'net (that be crazy talk!). Aphid has done nothing illegal, you may consider it wrong and sabotage (I personally wouldn\'t), but nothing illegal.

Well, I'm a developer, not a lawyer. :) I took the rankings mod down because I wanted to respect Aard's wishes in this matter.

If a bunch of us want to get together and use the source code (and only the code) to create a mod-able Sauerbraten (though we couldn't call it that, of course) I think there would be no objection. But Sauerbraten as it is, is the property of its developers, and I probably should have consulted them before going ahead with this.

In my opinion, part of the whole beauty of an open source license is that you don't need to personally ask permission to use, alter and redistribute something open-source you just abide by the license that lets you do those things.

However, I also believe that if you can, its far nicer to ask.

Stuff like this though "... the principle of it that people are modifying the way I want to see MY game, without my permission. You can only legally do this to your OWN game." is, and I mean no disrespect - quite the opposite, I have a lot of respect, but this is just plain wrong. ZLib specifically says anyone *can* do this with the sauerbraten sourcecode and binary - so long as they abide by the license.

it surprises me that you all argue about what is legal and what not, without even reading the licenses you talk about.

http://www.gzip.org/zlib/zlib_license.html

read clause 2. Aphid's mod is in clear violation of that rule.

Also, the ZLIB license ONLY covers the source, not the game and its media.

That's what I mean with MY game vs your OWN game. Aphid has created a sauerbraten server, not an AphidsAmazingFPS server.

Aard.. is it possible you could use Aphids server code in the official release of the game? I liked the ranking system and I thought it was a brilliant idea.

I have read it, thanks, but it's a pleasure to be insulted (I have a theory this is actually required of a OS project leader).

You really shouldn't accuse people of doing something illegal when you don't know if they have, (oddly, he could sue you for that). As far as I'm aware I haven't seen clause two broken. (and no masking a compatible server wouldn't count).

Ha, making a compatible server, not masking.
