Sauerbraten 2006-02-27 release

The changelog:

# added Fanatic's new soundtrack! 15 2 minute tracks, played at random in sequence (they were meant to "connect"), an endlessly varying song! :)
# experimental gameplay feature: the health boost / megahealth now only gives you +10, except it is permanent to your maxhealth for this game, as opposed to just health.
# experimental forward push on jump. Let me know if this is cool..
# text particles can now be any size, and now show the player's name permanently in 3d as well as any chat
# made T default key for multiplayer chat again, Y is now default for texture edits.
# frags now persist across disconnects
# fixed hellpig bounding sphere
# added menu page scrolling
# "sleep" command now supports multiple timers
# "music" command can now execute commands when a song is done playing
# optimized material rendering by grouping into larger surfaces (toggled by "optmats" var)
# many tiny tweaks to the multiplayer gameplay
# "maxfps" var for limiting fps
# "showmat" var for rendering invisible materials and selecting materials in edit mode
# edited cubes default to fullbright until calclight/patchlight
# added coopedit support back in | no map uploading yet...
# rewrote physics to be closer to the original Cube physics

I will make seperate threads for each new release from now on. It'd be good to have discussion on specific releases in seperate threads.

its great but 50MB!!! this is guna make it hard for dialuppers to keep up. maybe you should start releasing patches as well as the whole thing.

ok ive actually gone deeper into the new features:

the bad:
i dont like how close the gun is. i liked the old fov change system where the hudgun changed size too.

the physics are an improvement but not fast enough, in cube you move faster.

the good (and the awesome!):
physics= BIG IMPROVEMENT

fanatic, you are a genius, i love the music, all the tracks are original and sound different and all good. i found it difficult to changemap at the fear of the song stopping!

COOPEDIT!!!!

i love the health growth ;)
is it capped at anything?

and anything else i forgot!



geez your too quick aard, i was still discovering the new features in the MP edition then you go and improve it tenfold before im done!

i see sauerbraten finally as stable as cube and much more 'full feeling' (mainly due to the addition of the AWESOME SOUNDTRACK!!!!)

btw from now on aard like i said, you should release the full zip and also a patch zip to patch the previous version with the neccecary files.

Hehe great!

Physics feel very good.
Jumping feels fine too.
Btw ever since it´s introduction I loved the strong kickbacks, very useful, please keep it :D

Fanatic, I like these tunes much better than the cube ones :) Fatter sound and more melodic.

I think the health bonus is a good idea, but I´d prefer if the player would not spawn with it. He should start with 100, but be able get health up to his new max when picking stuff up. Would give the mapper control to balance that with locating spawns and health accordingly)
Must of course be tested, but imho it´ll add a lot , making heathboost much more valuable now.

The only thing I still miss is being able to set z-buffer bits. Performance is so much better in 16bpp here, but z-buffer must still be 24bit then, otherwise it´s ugly.
I hope that´s possible, would be great.

It's funny, passa, because in Sauer you actually move a tiny fraction faster than in Cube. I think it's just a scale issue: some of the Sauer maps have much more open spaces, so it can appear like you're not covering the space quick enough, even though you're moving fast as ever.

Cube movement speed = 22.

Sauer's movement speed is 100, with 4x larger world scale. So 100/4 = 25.

I didn´t even notice the guns being closer.
Not bad at all.
Making their position independent of fov is and extremely useful thing, that way the modeller doesn´t have to worry about making the gun look ok even at 120.. in some cases might even save polies/texture space.

hello all
i'm currently working on the mac version of the 2006-02-27 release but i can't get multiplayer to work. the serverlist shows dozens of servers but none of them respond and i can't connect to any of them....is this a multiplatform-bug or does it work fine on linux/windows? any ideas?

There is a major bug with entdrop where it doesn't work if set to 1. A work around is to just use entdrop 2 and manually place your mapents. Maybe I can convince Aard to make a quick re-release to fix this.

good point.

but also because strafing and pressing up doesnt make you go faster anymore, it looks slower. Could you make the speed of movement the same as when you used to press up+strafe in cube?

50mb: too much changes between releases to make this practical. We don't have THAT frequent releases, I can't make this any easier on the modemers easy.

hudguns: this is going to stay. fixed fov is the right way to do it, and allows us to fine tune the art. Also I want to avoid gun taking up too much screen real estate.

speed: as eihrul said, we took out the strafe+forward bug. So you move faster, but holding both keys you move slightly slower. Instead I am experimenting with other ways to speed up the game without changing maxspeed, as increasing maxspeed just makes the game uncontrollable. Try on a larger, more open map, to make many jumps in sequence, and see how fast you go... you can build up quite some speed.

fanatics track is brilliant. It makes sauer feel very professional.

me being quick: I would like to make people aware that the majority of code in this release is eihrul's work... he has slaved hard particularly at the physics, so if you run into bugs, be gentle :)

the 1000 health limit is not meant to be hit... but yes I could cap it lower if it turns out to be a problem. Most maps have one boost, meaning that the max is 200 if the same person gets all of them.

The boost is a very strategical powerup.

Players spawn with it? What do you mean? Everyone starts at 100.

I'll keep the current kickback.

I doubt I will add a bit depth switch. We really live in a 32bit world since 5 years ago.

Sleepwalkr is aware of the master server issue and looking at it.

We are not doing a re-release for entdrop... we'll have another release not too long from now :)

If you want to play sauer MP, please come to #sauerbraten, that's the easiest way to match up at the moment.

but dont change the max heath limit. in sp modes the mapper can slowly increase your character's max heath so you can finish in a big battle against 200 monsters with 1000 heath!

i love the new healthboost system! but i miss the old one. an idea:

-make one healthboost have +50 like in cube, call it healthboost, give it the DCP bottle model

-make another with the current +10 perma, but call it permaboost entity or something, give it the needle model

I meant that if you got the boost and die, you´ll spawn with 110 health.
I had expected it to spawn with 100 but with the next health pickup the player would be able to reach his 110.

:(
I don´t live in a 32bit world (as far as gaming goes), and probably won´t until a few years, because I simply can´t afford a top-notch system.

And I can´t find any tuning app that lets me override those settings.
