A new release! get it from:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=102911

The changelog:

# added Fanatic's new soundtrack! 15 2 minute tracks, played at random in sequence (they were meant to "connect"), an endlessly varying song! :)
# experimental gameplay feature: the health boost / megahealth now only gives you +10, except it is permanent to your maxhealth for this game, as opposed to just health.
# experimental forward push on jump. Let me know if this is cool..
# text particles can now be any size, and now show the player's name permanently in 3d as well as any chat
# made T default key for multiplayer chat again, Y is now default for texture edits.
# frags now persist across disconnects
# fixed hellpig bounding sphere
# added menu page scrolling
# "sleep" command now supports multiple timers
# "music" command can now execute commands when a song is done playing
# optimized material rendering by grouping into larger surfaces (toggled by "optmats" var)
# many tiny tweaks to the multiplayer gameplay
# "maxfps" var for limiting fps
# "showmat" var for rendering invisible materials and selecting materials in edit mode
# edited cubes default to fullbright until calclight/patchlight
# added coopedit support back in | no map uploading yet...
# rewrote physics to be closer to the original Cube physics

I will make seperate threads for each new release from now on. It'd be good to have discussion on specific releases in seperate threads.

Enjoy!

the pistol is a fast but underpowered railgun :) It is more powerful than the typical quake shotgun, as it is more precise, otherwise it has similar stats.

I personally find it satisfying to use, even though I know that if I engage someone with any other weapon he is at an advantage. And so he should be. It's a starter weapon.

Spawn camping... there may be some of that, but then again that is your reward for surviving instead of dying. Cube's biggest problem was that there was no incentive for surviving, and thus getting armours etc: the #1 strategy for getting max frags was to run at other players immediately. That does not make for and interesting game. Sauer is more balanced, tactically.

i like the pistol too but maybe rename it and remodel it to something else (like a super railgun or something)

a good 'pistol' would be achieved if you made the reload time like 0.2sec and then make it you cannot hold down and shoot, so it creates a more 'pistoly' feel. you would also have to lower the damage to about 10-13. I just think that the pistol model does not suit the 'pistol' gun in sauerbraten.

what is wrong with the current pistol? personally i dont like having to raise and press my finger 10 times a second..

by the way has anyone else found the new ranking system on aphid's server?

I didn't say the current pistol was bad I just said it wasn't really 'pistoly'. Maybe it should be renamed and remodelled and then there can be a real sorta pistol. Has anyone here ever played Counter-Strike: Source? Yer its a shit game but the Counter-Terrorist starting pistol is sorta what I meant.

Tactics...would be nice to be able to use them. So far from what I've played in sauerdm, it's the same old cube style gameplay going on....not that it's a bad thing of course :)

Also, I like the pistol, and I hope it doesn't change at all. In fact, I wouldn't mind having a way to only have the pistol in a game of dm, something like instagib, but with a weapon you have to get hit with a few times to die.

Well, imho, for real tactics in gameplay, you either need 2 small teams against each other(on a good map) or 1on1.. up from a certain number in dm, it´s a fragfest, in any game.
Still, in cube/sauerdm, tactics like making sure to get the amours and powerups, and even retreat vs fight will still raise your frag count.

I like the pistol too. It´s a good starting weapon. It will help to survive long enough until you grab one of the main weapons. I don´t see how it encourages spawn camping, since you have to be really good to camp with it.
It´s of course diffrent from the semi auto pistols in recent games.. but those are balanced via recoil, not via rof, principally.

I´d also welcome a pistol only mode. Would be fun :)

Yeah, the ranking thing is pretty sweet. Anyone know how he implemented it?

I am all about teamplay, I think its the way to play an fps. But the community was never large enough to sustain frequent teamplay matches, so I am trying to optimize the gameplay for 1v1 and small ffa. If the weapons etc are fun in those, then teamplay will rock automatically, when it happens.

Kurt... have you played a 1v1 in sauer lately? it is a LOT more tactical than cube, mainly due to the starting pistol. If you die, you can't just charge, you have to plan to take over control, against an enemy that can use his advantage to get more armour etc.

Pistol only mode.... I am open to that idea. The big fear I have is that it would only work well in 1v1. Instagib ffa is fair because its insta, if you have do ffa with multiple hits it becomes random who gets the kill I think.

Cannot argue that...sucks to die and lose the ammo collection. Some kind of "drop when you die" backpack (q1-ish I know) would push that feeling of loss even further :)

I suppose my methods of "tactics" are not what most would do...my first tactic is to move slow, watch every direction at once...but of course that doesn't work against some whacky person charging around the map with a full machinegun :) My methods of gameplay come from playing here, in the same room, with friends. We play truly tactical against each other...none of this charging all over the place methods. It's not easy to be sneaky in a game, but it's fun trying when everyone is on the same page as you are. This method of gameplay only really works well with instagib games of course.

Thanks for the feedback! The ranking system is a server-side hack that tracks the SV_DIED messages from the clients to tally scores, and the SV_TALK messages to provide the interface. Scores are written to disk on every map change.

i'd say make the player health 50, so it would take only 2 shots with a pistol to kill.. and you'd need some insanely large amount of ammo like 1000

also a fist, chaingun or rocket insta would be great too!

-------------

about aphid's ranking system, i find it slightly flawed. It divides your frags by your deaths, so if u dont die at all but frag a little (say 1 death and 6 kills), and there's a much better player who has 12 kills and 4 deaths, the n00b would be ranked higher than the better player (6/1 = 6, 12/4 = 3)

Good point about the ranking system, and it's been bugging me too. I'm considering switching to a system that more closely emulates how Cube and Sauerbraten do scoring.

Is there a thread for discussion of server-side mods? :)

if you are going to change the server, be sure to change the protocol version and everything else significantly, too, such that only clients of your mod can connect to it and not the official clients.

Changing server or client for the official game is considered cheating/sabotaging, irrespective of your intentions.

Damn. I hadn't thought of that. It certainly wasn't my intention to cheat or sabotage any of your work, but you have a very good point. The ranking system will have to go, then.

Would it be okay to distribute the modified binary then, for the client that would be able to connect to the game with ranking, or nay?

That would be useful, then a ranking system could stay, but users would have to get the modded client to play it.

I suppose a central repository of servers that aren't on the masterserver (presuming they'd be removed from the masterserver - that may not be, please inform) would be useful for that, and a single ID for playing modded servers perhaps.

I believe that's the case. If you mod the server, you should provide a modded client with a different protocol ID so as not to impersonate an "official" Sauerbraten game.

That really wouldn't suit me, which is why I'm just dropping the whole thing. I don't want to play in a "mod" sandbox--I'd rather provide a shared resource for the whole community.

Well, that's why I asked if it would still be on the main server list, that would alleviate it.

Heck, even better if there was as part of official sauerbraten a real official and 'mod client' (same thing but with a fixed protocol ID).

Then it would be more like a mod-beach.

Is the 1v1 going to be like the Rocket arena mod?

that was one of my favorite mods :)

Although you'd have to call it something other than mod to not confuse to completely external mods since it's more of a tweaking thing.
