PC specs (the "show off your PC" thread)

by CC_machine4 on 01/05/2006 00:06, 65 messages, last message: 03/09/2006 06:01, 28054 views, last view: 05/05/2024 09:47

i was just wondering what PC specs you guys use to play cube. Mine:

CPU: AMD sempron 3400+ @ 2.0 ghz (3.4ghz intel equivalent)
RAM: 1gig
GPU: 256mb nvidia 6600
HDD: 200gb
directX: 9.0c
performance: solid 60fps @ 1024x768 with ocull on
looking at whole of mm5remix : 21fps (read on to see what this means)

please include:
precessor, ram, graphics card (GPU), hard drive, fps/screenres combo you get in cube, your version of directX (or equivalent in other systems)

please DON'T include:
monitor, speakers/surround sound systems, power supply, PC case, keyboards, mice, any other games you have, games controllers, etc

note: to give a true comparison of performance i think looking at the whole of mm5remix map from a corner (move to the corner of the map) (ocull off - type /toggleocull or press f5) in sp mode, fullbright off @ 1024x768, minlod 250 and compare our framerates (should be interesting)

#46: oops burnt video card??

by Passa on 03/03/2006 09:27

uuh this is guna sound weird but my GeForce 6600GT caught on fire or something cos i smelt something burning and now my pc is fuked, hence i am confined to this piece of shit im using. it seems my fan fell of its axel and the card fried. its only 6 months old... Just a question what GPU should I replace it with? and is this 6600GT salvagable at all?

Let it cool and then try it only a couple minutes. I've seen CPUs shutdown and survive. But almost certainly it is not repairable.

Dual opteron 1.4 GHZ 64 bits

4gigs ram--- (2 banks of 2gigs dedicated to each processor)

Radeon 9800se 128meg "piece 'o shit, special edition"

2 "walmart 200$ special" 19 inch LCD displays

3 harddisks

4 OS'es (windows X64,Ubuntu,Kanotix, and Fedora core 4)

lame optical mouse
broken trackball

Wacom Graphire4, and intuos2 (why my textures look so nice)

the only reason I keep this computer is because Zbrush 2 works so well with it in 64 bit mode.
I still hold the world reacord in the Zbrush forums for the highest subdevided model (over 9 million polys)

it dont play games verry well, needs CPU upgrade verry bad!

motherboard can host 2 dualcore processors up to 2ghz... I might just save my time and money and get a new system with PCI express graphics and a decent processor...

I may save up and get this insted...

lol mate, why did you spend a small fortune on all that RAM and those 2 huge flatscreen's? you would have been better off getting less RAM and a smaller LCD/a CRT and a better processor and vid card, unless you have some apps that need tons of RAM and dual display..

#57: Zbrush

by stinky taco on 03/06/2006 18:23

Zbrush needs even more ram than I got...

The system is scaleable still, I can stick 2 2.2ghz dual core 64 bit chip in it.

then monitors are crappy $200 dollar ones :)

and I do use them, when I am modeling I use one screeen for the modeling application, and the other for refrence photos, and GIMP and Zbrush...

Blender also lets me scale the window across both monitors.

while playing games, I leave IRC running and webbrowser in other window too, along with my trusty winamp...

I rekon stinky taco, you don't need a new cpu, because the amount you will spend on two new ones will be rudiculous so its not worth it. Just get a new videocard, maybe a 7800GT or the new 7900GT ;)

#59: cpu

by stinky taco on 03/06/2006 21:07

the preocessors are what relly screw this system,

The 9800 is a direct x9 complient videocard.....

I just dont have the preocessor power to push most modern games, unless they allow Symetric Multiprocessing...

Call Of duty 2 runs verry well on this system, only because they use SMP...

Fear is ok too, they have 64 bit version, wich is not too bad...the only SMP they enable are from dual core chips tho...

Quake 4 totaly rocks,
they allow not only 64bit, but they allow SMP too... I can actialy play this one at 800x600

well anyways, processors are where this system really lacks...

The videocard is second...

I have a Nvidia6600GT sitting on my desk here, but in sauerbraten I get smeared textures, and no other 3d games works...
I even re-installed x64, it dont work too well..

I want PCI-E and I also want better HT support...

I may just buy a new system

hmm you may have to if your motherboard does not hav PCI-e. consider a 7800GT or a 6800GS if you get a new system. if you are worried about texture smearing, just use the last drivers in the 7 series forceware (i use 77.72).

Wow...some serious PC power listed here...makes my lowly system seem...well, lowly :)

I also have a 3.0 ghz P4 system, but I would rather talk about my AMD system, as it's more powerfull for gaming. I also have more fun overclocking my AMD.

Barton 2800+ cpu with 512kb L2, km400 mobo, 1.5gb DDR333, agp GF6800ultra 128mb, audigy gamer sound, 8mb cache 80gb 7200rpm seagate HD, and another HD the same size/speed in western digital flavor. Top it off with WinXP home edition, SP2. ( and for the record, yes I own a copy of pro too...just not on this pc )

This this runs every game I've tried so far at very nice framerates. There is nothing I drop below 1280x1024 to play, including Doom3, HL2, Q4, far cry, CoD2, BF2, etc. I run with 4xAA and 4xAF in all of my games, except far cry and doom3.

I do have it overclocked, and the way this thing OC's, EVERYTHING gets a boost, the PCI bus, AGP bus, memory, FSB, and clock speed can all be raised up by one setting in the BIOS...it's good fun :)

And from the list of truly badass PC's here, this thing is a POS in comparison to most!! What do you guys do with that much power? :)

noo i think u can get the extreme edition Pentium 4 either on normal clock 4.8 or you can get like 4.4 and overclock it easily to 4.8..

I know that my 3.2ghz pentium 4 is slowin down by new 7800GT card... but my system is super-unstable if I overclock to 3.6ghz or even as low as 3.4
