PC specs (the "show off your PC" thread)

by CC_machine4 on 01/05/2006 00:06, 65 messages, last message: 03/09/2006 06:01, 28091 views, last view: 05/19/2024 00:57

i was just wondering what PC specs you guys use to play cube. Mine:

CPU: AMD sempron 3400+ @ 2.0 ghz (3.4ghz intel equivalent)
RAM: 1gig
GPU: 256mb nvidia 6600
HDD: 200gb
directX: 9.0c
performance: solid 60fps @ 1024x768 with ocull on
looking at whole of mm5remix : 21fps (read on to see what this means)

please include:
precessor, ram, graphics card (GPU), hard drive, fps/screenres combo you get in cube, your version of directX (or equivalent in other systems)

please DON'T include:
monitor, speakers/surround sound systems, power supply, PC case, keyboards, mice, any other games you have, games controllers, etc

note: to give a true comparison of performance i think looking at the whole of mm5remix map from a corner (move to the corner of the map) (ocull off - type /toggleocull or press f5) in sp mode, fullbright off @ 1024x768, minlod 250 and compare our framerates (should be interesting)

Will this do? It is a school computer:

Intel P 4 1,5 GHz
256 MB ram
Geforce 2 MX/MX 400
37 GB HDD

Hope so, i really don't have the energy using my mac, but will this do also?

PowerBook G4 1,5 GHZ
15,2" Widescreen
1,256 GB RAM
80 GB HDD

THNX People. hope youll answer in not so soon

you mean 1256mb ram.
what video card does the powerbook have? that will determine if it can run it.

those school pcs are fine just be warned though:
the school computer no doubt gives you a limited user account. if it uses windows xp, you will have no driver probs BUT windows firewall will block the game from working on lan or the internet. you cant unblock it (i had the same problem when i tested my mod at school)

if it uses an older windows the drivers may not be installed (as winXP has built in gf2 drivers). its a bummer they dont have SiS drivers cos in my computer class my computer is one of the few they forgot to install drivers for the SiS intergrated graphics.

actually, anyone know any tips so i can install the drivers on a limited account? cube starts but runs slowly (software opengl) and sauerbraten just has an error.

i cant get cube to run at all, they got fed up with ppl trying to play games they disabled *.bat files. It says:

"The system cannot open 'cube.bat'. WARNING!! Your attempt to play games has now been logged."

grr stupid school, most games now come as a downloadable *.exe... any chance we'll get cube as a *.exe? without a bat file?

Read the actual .bat file. It doesn't do anything more than run the .exe with supplied arguments.

ATI Radeon 9600
3200+ AMD Athlon Processor
512 MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM Memory
200 GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA Drive
Processor Speed 2.20GHz, 512KB cache, 400MHz Front Side Bus

And that is my crappy computer specs. Thank you.

STOP MENTIONING ATHLON CLOCK SPEEDS! nah srsly they are completely irrelevent. just mention the thing like 3200+ or people are gonna start comparing ur pc to a 2.2ghz rather than a 3.2ghz pentium 4.

make a shotcut to cube.exe then add the arguments:
-w1024 -h768 and wow it works!

i seriously doubt that would work. shortcuts just start a program or batch for you, they don't run it inside some special shell or anything. So the school (if it's been done intelligently) will still stop you.

Does the new version of games-Knoppix have the 2005 cube? the 3.7-0.2 version has cube 2004 on it... wait, is that the newest version? my memory is failing me... But that's how I show off cube at school, by bringing it on a bootable disk.

It'll work, just remember to set the "start in:" field to the folder where the bat file is.

thats bloody awesome mate!
dont mean to dissapoint thou but the 4gb ram makes ur system slower.

the more ram u have the more it has 2 address. 2gb is the sweet spot i reckon.

btw, what is a good brand of the 7800GT 2 get that is overclockable? im thinkin about upgrading my 6600GT...

Passa, do you mean under just 64bit or 32bit aswell?

Are you just talking about the pointers it has to move around under 64bit mode?

Certainly, I heard that say the same kind of thing about the transition from 16 to 32.

Anyway, the main reason I got so much ram is because I'm a CS student studying AI. When doing machine learning, you need 1GB as the minimum heap size for your jvm. : )

Oh, not sure about the 7800GT.

I got an XFX cause it said it was overclocked out of the box. Not sure what it's like as a brand since I've always had MSI's before. I did get a free copy of Far Cry with it, though.

The neat thing about graphics cards is that they're so easy to upgrade. I'll probably get a new one in two or three years.

if u use 64bit it works better with more ram. 32bit is sluggish with 4gb ram. 2gb is the best cos u can play all games highest texture detail with no probs. in quake 4 i cant get it on ultra but the family pc in our house (exactly the same except it has 1gb extra ram) can run it at ultra no probs.

but at the moment 4gb is overkill. sorry!

btw bout the XFX vcard etc, im just cautious because my and my friend both bought similar systems (almost identical, its just mines quieter) and we both got xpertvision geforce 6600GTs. even though we ordered the EXACT same ones... he got a green one and i got a red one. im like 'im sure theres no diff'. well turns out my idle temp is 60 on 500mhz core clock. his on normal core clock of 500 as well only reaches like 49. i cant overclock mine above 525 and he got his to 725 yesterday. its just not fair. his cooling is obviously better. so now ive decided that the 7800GT im gettin has to be a double slot width... ill see if XFX cards are sold in australia...
