Sauerbraten logo competition :)

I know we have some people with good graphic design skills on this board, and it would be nice to have a good logo for sauerbraten. It will be used in two places, on top of the web page, and on loading screens in the engine (I just added those :)

requirements are that it has a 4x1 WxH ratio, in engine we will probably use 512x128, but also supply higher res versions like 1024x256 or better for other uses. Format must be PNG, with transparancy, such that it will look good on a grey background (this webpage) or black (engine).

it should have the word "Sauerbraten" in it, and maybe "engine" (much smaller). Any additional graphics is entirely up to you.

Post results in this thread. Once we have some contenders you can all vote which you like the best, but I will make the final call :)

here is the inverted blue banner from the other post on black gray and white backgrounds. I prefer the light from top left ;) having shadows instead of highlights, it looks different too - http://www.myzel.net/hungerburg/sauerbraten/

Hungerburg, there´s something weird about those. The top planes seem wrong in relation to the light source.

Anyways I think benzina won imho. Any colour would be fine with me, though personally i´d prefer the green one.

Benzina´s nice and clean (something I can´t really do myself, my stuff is always dirty and grunged) :P

I think the lighting feels wrong because the top of the big cube has a gradiënt that fades from orange to black while the gradiënt inside the cut-out fades from black to orange...

yes, the light cube is more friendly - I like it too - I just wanted to make a mess here :)

First, congratulations for that simple and nice logo.

Second, I think the logo itself (the cube, not the sauerbraten word) at website should be smaller. I think it should be at same height of word sauerbraten. Currently I guess it is too big.

Third, I don't like too much that color. Maybe that light-orange fading to white does not fit well with this dark atmosphere of this site and of game.

Fourth, I guess benzina did that logo in some vectorial program. I guess he can give us one SVG version of it. So, anyone will be able to resize or even change colors easily.

Last, I was thinking one thing, before reading the last 60 messages on this topic: maybe for loading screen would be better to just have the plain logo with "loading" below, without "sauerbraten" name. Think about Quake: is its name spread everywhere? Or just its symbol/logo?

I apologize to any people who might have been interested in the results of this but I can't do it :/ On a side note, the idea evolved into a Christmas skybox.. again sorry if there's anyone who wanted to see it done but my time and energy tends to decrease rapidly these days. Anyway if Cube or Sauer need something like this at some point in the future mail me, chances are I'll give it a try.

Well Crazy for the simple i think that Cube is perfect. The way it is in the logo now, you would notice that cube anywhere even if it was alone. I think it causes the same effect as the quake symbol.

part of the problem here is that we seem to have tried to jumble the idea of logo, icon, and banner all into one image. the orange cube by itself might make a good logo and icon, thats a topic worthy of discussion. With the name it definitely makes a good banner. but we should really start at the bottom and work up, we need an icon that is immediately identifiable as sauerbraten, then add to that to make the banner and logo.
