take the height map and add a small amount of gaussian blur and then create a new normal using it and that should do it .

Thanks for the help so far guys.
I did what you said, and it looks much better:

However, there is a light right in front of it in that screenshot yet it looks as though the light is coming from the top or something.. any ideas why?

If you use the g-scrollwheel before pasting the cubes you can increase or decrease the scale of the geometry.

It may have something to do with the original regular(0) texture if it was created to look that way while flat, or it may have something to do with your specularity map(s).
If it's your specularity map, then you need to make sure that it's fairly dark, because anything close to white always reflects light, even if there's almost no light around.

Easy entity property editing:
editbind 1 [ domodifier 101 ]
editbind 2 [ domodifier 102 ]
editbind 3 [ domodifier 103 ]
editbind 4 [ domodifier 104 ]
delta_edit_101 = [ entproperty 0 $arg1 ]
delta_edit_102 = [ entproperty 1 $arg1 ]
delta_edit_103 = [ entproperty 2 $arg1 ]
delta_edit_104 = [ entproperty 3 $arg1 ]
I use this //every// day.

Yes, that's already a great helper.
It's also incorporated into QCSP -
my personal scripting behemoth -
along with ALT as speedup for this (+10 instead of +1) and as speedup for texture browsing (again +10/+1) ... but that was before we got the texture-browser-by-GUI-menu :-P
It's particulary designed to help mappers but has also got some merits if your a pure player.
Mappers - go check it out and give me feedback ... http://www.quadropolis.us/node/435

Maps are all save in the packages directory.
Step 1: Make a directory with your name or whatever inside of the Sauerbraten/packages directory
Step 2: When you want to save your map, open the console by hitting the tilde(~) key
Step 3: Type "savemap mydir/mymap", where mydir is the name of the directory you made and mymap is the name of the map.
So, if I make a map, and I call it somesauermap, and I have a directory in the packages directory called acord, I type the following line in the console:
savemap acord/somesauermap
And when I want to load it to work on it later, I go to the console and type:
map acord/somesauermap

Anybody, please anybody, come on:
help me...
How do I turn on my PC?
What's this thing making these funny clicky noises in front of me?
Can you please also wipe my ass?
Please use your tongue, hmm, that's good.
Thank you - that felt ever so nice.

Learn to use your system.
Somehow your packages directory is un-write-able for your user.
Become administrator/root and change this.
If you don't even tell us what you are using then you are being a HELP VAMPIRE.
http://slash7.com/pages
BTW:
you needn't have a subdirectory. it is just good style - that's all.
type:
/savemap mymap
then
/map mymap
and don't forget you need to have a packages/mymap.cfg if you want to do CFG stuff with your map.
HTH

Because I'm not a friend of any console-typing, I usualy just hit F5 to save my map. XD Why easy, when it can be complicated, right? ;)

you should not have to become root. you have to just make sure you are allowed to write to the cube directory and below that. ctrl-click the cube directory, select the properties/information entry from the context-menu and in the permissions tab give yourself all the rights.
