Sauerbraten trailer video contest

So, I would like to hold a contest for a cool new Sauerbraten trailer video. The winner gets their video placed on the sauerbraten.org site for all to see. I am the final judge. The rules the videos must satisfy to win:

1) No content mods (bright skins, weapon mods, etc.). Must use all default Sauerbraten content.
2) Must use shaders with sane, good-looking default settings.
3) Must show both fun gameplay action shots, as well as some basic editing shots.
4) Avoid any extensive text or subtitling. Let the visuals speak for themselves and keep the pacing of the video quick. There shouldn't be a need to show more than the game's title and a link to the website. Don't bore the viewer.
5) Avoid any copyright-troubled music. Preferably use Sauer's in-game music, or Creative Commons licensed music.
6) Entries should be posted on youtube and linked here.

Seriously, our trailer video is in need of a major upgrade, and help producing this would be majorly appreciated and help Sauer's longevity and player population. So if you want to help out, have at it!

Looks good, beast. My (personal) suggestion:
- through out the rocket at the end
- add more editing
- don't show some maps twice, instead show other maps or more mass-ffa/effic scenes

Then, imho, you got a winner video!

Ty, Zorg! And thanks for the suggestion. The song is only 1 minute 23 seconds, so I didn't feel that I should add any more to it. Also, I wouldn't want a trailer to be that much more than 1:23 :p. Thanks for the suggestions, though!

And 720p is not really an option for me unless I lowered my gfx settings for higher fps at a higher res. (btw, I recorded most at 800x600)

Just for those making other videos, I just want to pass on my rules that I follow when making movies

1.) Never show misses with rifles
2.) Always show the frag, not only damage
3.) Try to match your frags/shots/flagscores/transitions with beats in music
4.) If the player shown uses a weapon other than rifle, try your hardest to not show any misses unless it doesn't have much significance in the frag

If you want to stick to that song (I assume the license is adequate) and thus to the 1:23 (both good ideas), then I'd still consider some improvements I mentioned above:

If you get rid of the rocket at the end (it doesn't look good anyways) you have some additional time for mapping. And if you don't show some maps twice or more often, you get some time for either mapping or mass effic/ffa or other maps. I'm telling you this because I'm pretty sure eihrul will want to see more mapping than in your latest version.

(You could also collaborate with someone on the mapping scenes as afaik you're not a mapper)
(If the time's not enough you could always add a few seconds without music but ingame sounds)
(Too bad about the resolution, hope 480p is enough)

5.) When flying in free spec/edit mode, don't fly through blocks; act as if blocks are impenetrable.

1:34 - Nice stadion, but the background of it is untextured :P.

You also fail pretty much on the shooting part; a lot of missers (wich isn't making it look better. Especially if you try to chop some air wich a chainsaw).

2:00 - Do people really need to see wich players were playing on that certain time?

I see a lot of texturing, geometry, lighting and detailing, but where's blendmapping :S?
It's one of the newer features and would be logical if that would be included.

It's a nice video when it comes to the editing part, but is lacking pretty much on the gameplay.

You could actually say your vid just lacks the opposite of beast's map :P.

The default Sauerbraten maps aren't convenient at all to show the charm of the Sauer editor.

I see no problem with untextured parts in the stadium since it's supposed to show editing.

Concerning the names I think they're just names that can be changed randomly at any time and do not really represent anyone.

I cannot shoot any better ^^

Everyone, feel free to use any part of my trailer for your own trailer if you like parts of it ^^

I overall liked the degree to which this video showed off the gameplay as the player would experience it.

The admonition against subtitling has nothing to do with the HUD. Showing the HUD is perfectly okay because it's part of the game. Rather I mean turning the trailer video into a book where people are somehow supposed to read what they should think about the game, rather than, well, just see it.

Though, overall, yeah, it might have looked a bit cleaner if the following commands were used to hide console spam:

confilter 0 // hides top console
miniconfilter 0 // hides chat console

True, there are some points wich won't fit into the profile of what eihrul is asking (like avoiding extensive text), but in one of the trailers, they found a solution of that, let it appear trough the trailer and fade it away.
What about to learn for that?

Unless the text is approved by me before use, it is likely from two faults: Engrish and silliness. I will reiterate, you should not have to tell the viewer "Best game evar", rather you should show why it is. All telling someone that does is make them skeptical and immediately assume a defensive viewing posture. They will compare it to every other "best game evar" and start trying to pick it apart.

That last QuakeLive trailer is a good example of everything that can possibly go wrong with telling-and-not-showing. By the time it finally actually shows the game, the viewer is already bored watching video-editing-effect-wankery and will likely just go look at something else. It literally takes 37 seconds before anything resembling game footage starts, and it just goes downhill after that. That's longer than my internet-trained attention span, sorry.

In the end making grandiose statements about random bullet-point features has about as much effect as random lists of bullet-point features... i.e. none. Biggest bang for buck is showing actual cool gameplay and edit-mode footage.

I liked the trailer, there's some pretty good footage in there. But i think some "higher" quality would work better. Perhaps you can't record at a higher resolution, but then again, it's the age of high definition! ^_^

I also did notice you do not use Anisotropic Filtering. What is it that no one never uses Anisotropic Filtering in this game. >_<
