ATTENTION: LINUX USERS!

by eihrul on 10/28/2002 19:59, 49 messages, last message: 07/22/2006 20:43, 31140 views, last view: 05/05/2024 04:16, closed on 07/22/2006 20:46

There were some major reentrancy problems in the server browser on Linux, which can and did cause many lockups when trying to connect to servers in the list. I have created new client binaries that fix this problem; get them at:

http://tunes.org/~eihrul/cube_linux_clients_2002_10_28.tar.gz

ENet (the source code) was likewise updated to fix the problem, so if anyone is trying to compile Linux clients, you might want to get the updated code:

http://tunes.org/~eihrul/enet_2002_10_28.tar.gz

Debian unstable works fine if you compile the binary yourself.

Fatal signal: Floating Point Exception

This is a bug in SDL.

Managed to repro the thing, sometimes this apears when another program is already using the soundcard... You probably left enabled (by default) the sound-daemon of KDE or Gnome
You can check by (as root) doing a
# killall esd ; killall artsd
before starting Cube

Also, be sure to check that if xmms is running, the playback has to be STOPped, not just paused.

I get this error too. I dont use KDE or GNOME, and my onboard sound is not supported by linux. All required libraries have been installed. Any ideas?

#37: cube @ FreeBSD?

by Mellerti on 04/19/2004 10:28

I tried once again to connect to servers, this time freshly compiled on FreeBSD 5.2, same error:

"Illegal network message (type)"

-Single playing modes works perfectly

:-)

Any news / ideas?

If you want connect to the network, you must use the original cube binaries. A selfcompiled cube use another network protocoll...

(right?)

Yes, exactly.
If you want to run the FreeBSD server on 5.x, install compat4x package. I run it that way for our LAN.

#41: SDL Parachute Deploy

by i3839 on 04/26/2004 02:43

Cube crashes with the following message:

"Fatal signal: Floating Point Exception (SDL Parachute Deployed)"

When cube starts I also get:

"sound init failed (SDL_mixer): No available audio device"

I have only alsa configured, no OSS, perhaps SDL can't handle that?

Anyway, a workaround is to set the sound volumes in autoexec to 0, then cube works just fine.

I tried compiling cube myself, but I get the same error then. But it works when I replace the sound functins in sound.cpp with empty dummy functions. I have SDL 1.2.7.

Why is fmod not used? It's supposed to be better and cross-platform...

Why don't you enable ALSA OSS emulation?

#43: Re: SDL Parachute Deploy

by i3839 on 04/26/2004 17:55, refers to #42

Because I don't need it, and because I don't use sound much. SDL shouldn't crash when there is no OSS sound, is that too much to expect? I know this should be solved by SDL, and not Cube, but I just wanted to share what I found out, I'm not the only one who gets that parachute message.

Strange... on my old RH7.3 this didn't appeared if i had no sound device at all (ie modules not loaded) but only if i had the sound device blocked by another process...

I tried it on my other pc which has only OSS sound, and it crashed with the same error.

So, just for fun, I tried it with esd running, and that actually worked. The funny thing is that esd didn't work (no OSS on this pc), and it closes after trying some things out first. But if I start cube up just after I start up esd, before esd exits, cube actually just works. The amazing thing is that sound works too then.
