WordlWar2 Mod

OK, a friend and me are big fans of Day of Defeat (http://www.dayofdefeatmod.com/). But this game is death right now :/

Most servers are with bots.
And the last human palyers feel IMAO like LAG LAG LAG.

So why not creat a "new" dod/WW2-game with the sauerbraten engine?

I already started to play with the source. And I think I can do the programmer stuff. But my skills are zero in creating models sounds and textures. :(
And as far as I read in this forum the creators of the Sauerbraten content dont like it if we reuse there stuff...

So I like to ask who can help a bit with thinks like this?

We need

models: WW2 Guns like riffles, grenades, pistols and later some models for the players

sounds: for weapons

textures: something to creat city ruins


The first goal for this mod is very small:
- startpoints for allys and axis
- one or two weapons like riffle and grenade
- one map

I'm kind of embarreassed to say that the mp40 smg actually came to 381 tris
2 swords are about 224 tris and rifle/rifle caliber pistols are around 133

oh well...if thats still too many, I'll find a way to redo it for less

Those all sound quite good, and other people say you can go several times that high. I try and shoot for less than or equal to 400 when I'm working on hudguns.

except for the smg, I never intended these to be hudguns, and even then, the smg is kind of iffy, imho.

sounding good is one thing....but looking good (enough) is more important, eh?

Tentus, Ahab: It´s not 1998 anymore. 400 tris is Cube stats, not Sauer.
1000-1500 visible tris on a hudgun is no problem for any system that is reasonable to run Sauer on.
For Vweaps : Go as low as possible while having it look good, 200 is a reasonable limit there.

I suck at hands and probably waste lots on them.
I'll still use as few as possible no matter what anyways

if anyone wants my .blends, email me and I'll be happy to give them to the community
once I get around to texturing them and making them usable in cube2, I'll put them on quadropolis anyways

But no matter how you look at it, 400 tris can do a lot. Add in transparencies and spec maps etc, and a very good looking model can easily fit into 400.

I haven't made much change to my computer in the past three years, and it's kind of silly to need to upgrade just because "everyone else is doing it". The big appeal of Sauer and Cube to a great number of its players is that it's one of the few modern games that has low-poly art, and can still run on their system. The more tris we add to every gun, the more players we drop out of the picture.

I recall a thread that told of a graphics bottleneck concerning rendering monsters/mapmodels as opposed to AI...

I'd rather have 4 decent monsters moving around than one really good monster. So fewer tris are always better even if the engine/hardware can handle more. Its a tradeoff between detail and framerate.

we can probably afford a 2000 tri hudgun, though I don't see how you'd possibly be using more than 1000 without being unnecessarily wasteful.

The general art rule is simpler: the prettier something is, the more polys are allowed. Or better: we want to optimize our beauty to tri ratio :)

Just because a certain amount of polys is "possible" given current hardware doesn't mean you can be lazy and use the full amount at all times. We have a total budget across the game, and a wide variety of hardware platforms, better art (beauty per tri) helps everything.

I like the mp40, the other low poly weapons appear really blocky from that view. The knives and swords are pretty neat.

yeah..the guns are pretty blocky, but thats the result of hovering around 100 tris total. As I said, I was meaning to use them as weapons for orgos and it'd be obscene to give an orgo a weapon built with more tris than the orgo itself, eh?
I guess I'll just up my tri budget to 250.
I really do need to get off my lazy ass and texture them.
