#7790: forum bug

by >driAn<. on 03/21/2007 23:52

since a while there is a bug in this forum software: if you post a new message it won't be shown after the reload of the page. causes people to double post and/or feel 'censored'.

#7793: Sauerbraten Won\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t Run

by Freddy on 03/23/2007 02:32

I have Windows XP and Ubuntu Edgy Eft on my computer. Sauerbraten works great on XP, but won\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t run under Linux. It starts loading the resources, and then it always hangs up hard when loading qcomp3 from the lunaran package, forcing a restart. This is quite annoying. I don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t know if this has happened to anyone else, and I am very confused. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I reloaded four times before my last double post. Then the first one showed up immediately.

OK that last post it showed me after I posted it. Then it took it away when I reloaded the page. Even if I reload the forum index and go back into the thread, it's not there. Netscape if it matters.

#7796: Lower End Computers

by calimer on 03/23/2007 11:15

I was wondering is it possible to tweak the cube 2 engine to run on a 450mhz computer? I have some computers that I want/need to run it on but they are only 450mhz with 64 megs of ram. And the problem isn't as simple as "why don't you just go out about by a better computer", I'm stuck with them. I have been considering using the cube 1 engine instead for those computers but I like how cube 2 can edit sides in addition to floors and ceilings. I think I could dig up some extra ram, but it is processing power that is the problem. I'm not interested in running the game, just the engine and making custom maps. Take care and thank you for your time.

No, sorry, not a hope in hell, even the original Cube will chug on that sort of system.

Sorry again :(

I don't understand why you would say even the original cube would chug if these are the system requirements.

absolute minimum spec: p200 with tnt2/v3 (15-20 fps @640 depending on map)
reccommended spec: p500 with gf1/radeon or better (50-60 fps on most maps)

Seems like it would run okay, though I could be wrong. Why do you think that would chug? And as a note, I don\\\\\\\'t have easy access to them or else I would just be testing it instead of asking. Take care and thanks for your help.

"Chug" is a matter of opinion, too. I used to be happy with 15-25 fps, when I used to play quake1dm on a 486.

Now I would say, I want a minimum of 35-40 fps to be comfortable...many people say they need 60+ fps.

As for this forum software, I'm running the windows flavor of firefox. I allow it to update anytime it asks, and I've never had a double post on this forum. I've not had any cookie-retaining problems either, once I set the browser correctly.

ditto kurtis, no problems.

and reading pasa's post would suggest that he meant chug as suck

One of the fastest PCs I ever used was a proper P2 450 w/ SCSI HD and WinNT... I would estimate about 5 times faster than my current Athlon 2000+ system. Apps that would make my Cele333 chug would run on that system at full speed at 7% CPU. It wouldn't run Cube due to graphics hardware but I did enjoy the smoothness on Quake, even running in a window.... I routinely play with fps dipping down to 10 in SP which requires care not to over-correct. Multiplayer is a bigger handicap, although small DM maps are OK. Anyway, I wouldn't make assumptions about PCs unless you understand a lot more about what determines overall system performance than I do -- that means TRY IT and also don't go out and drop big money on a graphics card just for Cube because it could still suck.

I don't mind if FPS is lower as long as it's consistent. I play BF2142 at around 25-30 FPS and I feel fine with it. Whereas I play Sauer at 70-80 FPS (used to get a solid 80 FPS but now I only get 72, I'm mad) and I get pissed on maps like Thor or Skycastle where I lag down to 30 FPS because the ungodly amounts of water.

"and reading pasa's post would suggest that he meant chug as suck"

I meant chug as in "it'll lag so much you won't want to play". You'll find that at 640x480 it won't run fast enough on the more popular, taxing maps like douze.

And times are changing - I used to play Quake on my old laptop with around 10-15 FPS and I didn't really care. Now I find it hard to play a game if the FPS dips below 30, and if I'm trying to compete online it needs to be above 50.

Really - I don't see why people get offended so easily. calimer, you asked if you could tweak Sauerbraten to run on a 450mhz PC. No, you can't.

You could also try downloading the 30mb thing and seeing if you can live with the performance instead, rather than asking everyone else and then bitching when you don't get a good answer.

My original post is almost a page up and hasn't even been acknowledged. I refer you to post #7813, which is a plea for help in getting this game to run. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
