#3365: Other editor's ...

by Michael on 10/07/2004 00:11

Hello,

I am trying to create maps for Cube but am finding it difficult .. I don't understand the documention - I require more examples. Anyways is there other editors that I could try to make more complex maps. I would like to have tunnels under briges and such things.

Thanks.

Michael.

Michael: There are no other editors for cube... Just the ingame one.

Since the cube engine is quite simple, you can´t doo too complex maps. You can do "Tunnels over bridges" if you use the bridge mapmodel.

just take your time learning how to edit it... Maybe look at the present maps and go to edit mode and play around...
Once you have understood how it works, it´s quite easy :)

On these sides you can find helpful tutorials that cover special things:

#3367: Server RC-script for Gentoo

by D.plomat on 10/08/2004 14:27

Actually it is very basic, it doesn't restart linux_server if a problem happens, nor does any kind of logging, it's just for the convenience of seeing "Starting Cube server" with other sevices at boot :)

i've just uploaded it to my Cube page at http://membres.lycos.fr/dplomat/cube/

You need to change the line at line 11 to set the path to linux_server, because i don't use 'emerge cube' to install it, i install Cube manually on another dir.

Remove the -mblah parameter to make the server reachable from the net.

Can probably be easily adapted to RedHat/Mandrake... if some have made one for RH/MDK i can host it on my page.

lol, obviously that was "services", unless it ends up with the red [Failed] instead of the nice green [ OK ] :)

# rc-update add cubeserver default

to have it started each time you start the machine.

...probably it won't start if put into the 'boot' level instead of 'default'

#3369: check it out...

some russian publisher made a "commercial" game based on cube, ripping off cube media & code without any credit. They never even contacted me:

They mixed in a few of the Polycount player models. I noticed the old Johnny the Homniscidal Maniac model in one of the screenshots. That's a legal, lisenced character (the artist behind Invader Zim) - this could piss off some bigger fish than you, Aard.

I understand Russian a little, according to this review the game is pretty bad; they are plain mocking at it, the quality of the models, etc. and finish roughly with something like "the two developers at Bilby Art Studio live 8 years in the past". The title of the game is something like "Snake Pit". Nothing is said about Cube anywhere. Generally in Russia and to some extent in Bulgaria (where I live) this is common practice especially with book covers but such things don't make it to the market or if they do you won't find them in hypermarkets or stores, but they do make it to street booths, internet media and the press.

Anyway that's not why I came to write here, I need a little help with the Cube source. I noticed that the newest version of Cube fixes a problem in which particles are not rendered correctly with water in the background. It will take me quite some time to figure out what was done to fix it, but I'll do it pretty fast if I get a kick in the right direction.. anyone?

#3376: the story continued...

by Aardappel_ on 10/09/2004 04:38

I have been able to "obtain" a copy of the game (hey, I guess I should not feel bad about pirating software that is a rip off of my own free game, should I?).

Looked through the maps in amazement. Most of them are butchered versions of existing maps, often made MUCH worse by whoever edited them. And I am not even talking about the textures yet, which seem to have gone through the procedure of: load in photoshop, drag a random slider, save.

Comes with some frontend (with CD copy protection, haha), and some intro low-fi video made in a 3d package where a guy shoots some bottles and dead bodies lie on the street... and it has some of my own textures in it!

If any of you want to have a look at it, I am not going to give links out on this board, but you can *cough* obtain it from me in irc... I made an archive that removes all the unnecessary crap to reduce the download size (from 271 megs iso to 19 meg rar).

Well I note that little has been done on any files in src in months excluding physics.cpp. This is pretty understandable because as of two weeks ago we didn't have stairs. I could report some physics bugs to Gilt (if he is interested) but otherwise I'd rather find someone else to work on. What doesn't work? Are models working? Guess I should try it. Is collaborative map editing over a network working? I think that's one of the coolest features of cube. About the only thing I've hacked so far is to make the game give up the mouse focus if you're on the menu (might hack this some more to make it so you can use the mouse to select menu options). Is there any particular area where I can make a positive contribution?

haha, looks like some companies have an incredible power to butcher a good free game into a bad commercial game.

looking at the screenshots, i wonder if any wannabee mod-maker could have done such an ugly thing... even ruining some fine and wise design in maps.

Funny is that, they even didn't changed the ammobox models, although replacements can be found easily. Also they kept the hellpig... would it be that they were blocked by the non-standard frames numbers in it? ...lol, maybe they didn't even compiled nothing and just renamed cube.exe into snakejack.exe?

The hellpig model docs say it's free for commercial use. I guess those guys thought they knew what they were doing. Maybe they're some kids, I don't know.

Yep, so legally it's ok if they left the readme's of the contents in place.

In fact i was more pointing out that the hellpig model doesn't seem to fit the coherence (if there is any) of the style of game, compared to other models they've put in. Unlike other models that can just be overwritten by new files, the hellpig requires a minimal bit of coding to be replaced, because it uses nonstandard animation frames numbers so it becames totally buggy if you just copy another .md2 model in its place.
