low FPS with Sauerbraten

by undefined on 03/13/2006 19:19, 28 messages, last message: 08/04/2006 02:07, 6414 views, last view: 05/05/2024 18:55

I played Cube, but it is only game which always freezes after 5-10 minutes of playing. I got 40-60 fps on Radeon 9250. I tried Sauerbraten. I got only 10-30 fps. It could
be possible to decrease geometric and texture
details, visibility, mipmapping to increase framerate.

#12: Low fps with sauer and cube

by Acieeed@newpc on 07/22/2006 14:54

Hi to all

i have a new PC:
+ Petium D 940(3.2ghz each Core)
+ 1 gig of Ram
+ Ge Force 7300 GS
with WindowsXP home(32 bit)

I get only 60 fps on Sauer(with Shaders and without) Cube is the same Problem.

Any suggestions?

You have something called Vsync on. Disable it in your driver settings.

Vsync limits your FPS to the refresh rate you are running at, once you turn it off, you can get up to 200 fps by default, but this number is changeable by the command maxfps

I don't know what advantage you think you're getting by drawing faster than your monitor can refresh.

I find that Sauerbraten feels rather stiff with Vsync on, its like its not suited to it. Yea even though you can't SEE more than 60FPS it feels smoother.. for some weird reason..

I find the same thing Passa. I think although we can't see more than 60fps our brains pick up more than just the 60 frames we see. A bit like how we can only see 14 million colours but people like to use 16 million as helps fill in the gradient 'gaps' our brain picks up.

Tempting logic.
But - physically - your screen limits the amount of frames - so no way your subconcious could pick up what isn't displayed.
But since Sauerbraten has frame-dependent physics I guess you will get additional smoothness by cranking up your fps beyond screen refresh rates.

You´re wrong, meatrome. Of couse it will be more fluid the more frames you get. Just tearing will occur. However there are some sweet spots where it isn´t all that noticeable. (eg. double amount).
Movement taking place will be smoother, you´ll just be seeing 2, 3 or 4 frames at once in one refresh cycle.

I prefer vsync though, but I also play at 800x600, 100hz. Couldn´t stand 60hz.
100 frames is fine for me.
If you run lower than 100hz, it´s usually better not to cap frames, coz 60fps is still pretty choppy.

I didn't disagree with the smoothness argument but maybe I took a bit of liberty at interpreting what is >60 fps.

The "how many fps do you get"-thread lead me to believe we were talking 200+ fps here and you'll never get those drawn on any monitor now, will you!?!
Because the memory will already have been overwritten by the time the monitor catches up with the GPU.

But it's good you regularly tone down my rants on this forum ;)
Guess I get carried away sometimes ...

It took me a sec to figure out what this meant. You'll see several frames being sheared together, yes. On most games that's terribly annoying but I guess Cube is fast enough to justify it.

It depends on the exact relation of your frames to your refresh rate, it´s most noticeable when both are pretty close or if there´s lots of fluctuation, but there´s "sweet spots" where it actually works fine. The 199 cap works good for my 100hz for example, but if I cap at 150 it´s ugly..

this argument has been done 100 times before.

Instead of arguing with incomplete information (y'all are forgetting control lag, for example), go the simple route and simply try comparing 60 fps vs 200 fps. I feel the difference big time.

So is there a way to decrease geometric and texture details, visibility, mipmapping and stuff like that? I read the doc about configuration, but it seems to be outdated with the new version of sauerbraten and I wasn't able to fix my low fps. In the last sauerbraten version my fps where fine, but now it's unplayable. FPS of 10-30 is not good for a fast paced shooter like sauerbraten. My PC specs aren't that bad either, I have Tremulous and warsaw running without problems. :)

try -f1 (or -f) -b16 -z24

You can´t change mipmaps, geometric detail and texture detail.

Try running at 800x600.

The new maps use shaders very heavily...if they run slow for you, and the older maps run fast, this tells me you have a weak and/or old video card.

As makkE said, use the -f switch at the command line for starting sauer to disable the shaders. The new maps will still work, and look ok, you just won't see the bumpmapping and specularity effects.

...or buy a more powerfull video card
