low FPS with Sauerbraten

by undefined on 03/13/2006 19:19, 28 messages, last message: 08/04/2006 02:07, 6434 views, last view: 05/18/2024 09:49

I played Cube, but it is only game which always freezes after 5-10 minutes of playing. I got 40-60 fps on Radeon 9250. I tried Sauerbraten. I got only 10-30 fps. It could
be possible to decrease geometric and texture
details, visibility, mipmapping to increase framerate.

#1: thats odd

by Passa on 03/20/2006 07:42

My sister has a:

Sempron 2600+
512MB Ram
Radeon 9250
Windows XP Pro

and her pc gets 70 - 80 FPS all the time on Cube. This is at 1024x768 resolution.

Maybe try new drivers?

Though phong shading is a nice gimmik, I can hardly see any model that benefits from it (apart from the fact that all models need to be smoothed correctly now).

I´d rather like to see some simple gourad shading and/or specularity maps for models. Maybe being able to turn phong on as an option (if there´s really something that is porcellain, glass, chrome or other shiny stuff)
My framerate dropped by 50% in dm maps btw :(
5-10 frames in k_rpg1 and jungle (vegetation seems to kick in hard)

All in all it´s great to see some shading, but that phong thing is very drastic imho, generates a lot more shadow.

I´ll smooth the current guns (I have the ms3d versions of pistol, fist, shotgun, RL and rifle.) and the pickups and my mapmodels.

Note: if the shaders are too much of a performance hit, they can be disabled with the -f command-line option.

Shaders are also configurable via data/stdshader.cfg.

Good to know :D
I´ve looked into that cfg.. looks like I have to overcome my codephobia by now.

Oddly enough, my framerates have increased across the board with this release. The only reason I can see for this is something I read that said that ATI cards >=r300 are actually doing T&L via vertex programs generated by the drivers. Unless, of course, there is some performance improvement that is not obvious from the release notes...

I have lost heaps of performance in the new release.

My 7800GT gets to as low as 60FPS.

I think the phong lighting is cool, but maybe a bit too shiny.

Freezing could be caused by security bug.
I have uninstalled cube. I have higher fps in all games after enabling HyperZ.

by Acieeed@newpc on 07/22/2006 14:54

Hi to all

i have a new PC:
+ Petium D 940(3.2ghz each Core)
+ 1 gig of Ram
+ Ge Force 7300 GS
with WindowsXP home(32 bit)

I get only 60 fps on Sauer(with Shaders and without) Cube is the same Problem.

Any suggestions?

You have something called Vsync on. Disable it in your driver settings.

Vsync limits your FPS to the refresh rate you are running at, once you turn it off, you can get up to 200 fps by default, but this number is changeable by the command maxfps

I don't know what advantage you think you're getting by drawing faster than your monitor can refresh.

I find that Sauerbraten feels rather stiff with Vsync on, its like its not suited to it. Yea even though you can't SEE more than 60FPS it feels smoother.. for some weird reason..

I find the same thing Passa. I think although we can't see more than 60fps our brains pick up more than just the 60 frames we see. A bit like how we can only see 14 million colours but people like to use 16 million as helps fill in the gradient 'gaps' our brain picks up.

Tempting logic.
But - physically - your screen limits the amount of frames - so no way your subconcious could pick up what isn't displayed.
But since Sauerbraten has frame-dependent physics I guess you will get additional smoothness by cranking up your fps beyond screen refresh rates.

You´re wrong, meatrome. Of couse it will be more fluid the more frames you get. Just tearing will occur. However there are some sweet spots where it isn´t all that noticeable. (eg. double amount).
Movement taking place will be smoother, you´ll just be seeing 2, 3 or 4 frames at once in one refresh cycle.

I prefer vsync though, but I also play at 800x600, 100hz. Couldn´t stand 60hz.
100 frames is fine for me.
If you run lower than 100hz, it´s usually better not to cap frames, coz 60fps is still pretty choppy.
