true, but i could see how a 30 second window of opportunity would really help. we get a whole lot of correction posts. A moderator could simply be someone who isn't restricted by time limits, on anybody.

i suppose you and Gilt never make mistakes. riiiight 8)

and who suffers from posting mistakes?
all forum users.

now how do you propose to encourage people to think before they post?

nobody is working on that, cuz its pointless.

so we all suffer with extra unnecessary spam cuz you dont want editing functions.
GOOD SOLUTION.
it sure is EASY.

silentfox:
the time limit allows you to edit as soon as you post something. but not after an x amount of time.

My forum doesn't work like that then. You can edit your post as soon as you post if you see a mistake. I use the Invisionfree forum boards. And I'm quite good with using that system.

nah a forum like that (what are they called... phpBB or something?) is too cluttered and BIG. this one is neat and tidy. its also good that you can see the whole page of the thread as you type. but i rekon a post count of each user would be cool. of all the forums im a member of, this one i probably talk in da most. it would be good to be able to look at how much time ive spent typing x many posts.

only problem with a feature like that is people start competing and you get posts like 'lol' and 'yea thats cool' or other stuff like that just to increase their count.

editing posts is a cool feature. i generally write long posts and i cant be bothered to read it over before i send it. this is the internet! not mail where you walk to the post office and mail it. how hard is it to put in a feature like this anyway (thats not sarcasm)

here's a tip: read over stuff before you post. Wether it is on this forum, an email, or anything you do, it will get you further in life.

i guess...
although like i said this forum has a much 'cleaner' interface than one of them phpBB ones. the only feature that maybe should be considered then should be the ability for moderators to delete spam. like in the cube pda release thread, what is with that? same for that french thread.

we arent talking about me or any particular person.
here, right underneath where you make that silly comment,

Passa has this to say:
--------------------------------------
i generally write long posts and i cant be bothered to read it over before i send it. this is the internet! not mail where you walk to the post office and mail it.
--------------------------------------

for somebody smart enough to create an engine you toss out some pretty dumb comments frequently.
take your own advice and think before you speak.
if you had an editing feature it would have been handy for you right about now Aard.

cant wait to hear the "smart" comments from fanboys in reply to this.

I can only really code, for the rest of it I am pretty dumb. So dumb in fact, that I don't understand the point of your post at all.

I'm a pretty easy going kind of guy. I can easily ignore a reasonable amount of typos, grammar mistakes, spam or trolls. I think most people here are the same.

Regardless, it seems like what you really want is a preview button, not an editing feature.

Preview only makes sense if there's formatting, of which we have none.

If you're satisfied with having a 30 second window to make edits then obviously you proof-read your posts after you hit submit. Just do that but before you hit submit and it's all good.

> I can easily ignore a reasonable amount of typos, grammar mistakes, spam or trolls. I think most people here are the same.

I admit it, I'm easily baited. ;)

at minimum can we have spam deletion for moderators?

Me, I just go with the flow. I accept whatever forum system a site is using, without complaining. If I really can't navigate it, I just wouldn't go there. I have no problem using this one. I don't even mind the cookie login, because I can access my mail from anywhere in the galaxy.

I'm much the same at my sites. "It's this way, because I want it this way" :-)

For a forum, I personally use VBulletin, because I like the administration features.

I'd vote to have a kill account option. This would solve the problem with editing your mail address and stuff, but confirmation by mail should be required again. I think moderators should take action only when there's spam and off-topic posts (oh, I didn't say that did I? forget about off-topic), and when there's account abuse (a person posting as someone else), or if a user is unable to kill their account (server where mail should be delivered died or something). Most of that stuff hasn't happened so far, so I guess I'm overreacting a little.. Anyway, just some thoughts on the forum.

aard you were just re-iterating what gilt and sleepwalker were saying.

that we dont need an editing feature because people should just be careful to not make mistakes.

apparently failing to see my counterpoint, that people are not code that you can program. they WILL do/say stupid/inappropriate/misplaced things regardless of any advice from you or anyone else that they shouldnt.

is it even really helpful telling people they should be careful and only post necessary/on-topic/smart things?
thats like saying "you should be successful and happy in life".
pointless.

communicating effectively with other people can always be improved via refactoring.
often thru insights that a proofreading CANNOT give
(such as replying to someone only to see somebody else further down in the thread did a better job, or invalidated your guesses with proof, etc.).

if you wanna argue that it wont be beneficial enough to be worth coding, thats another matter entirely.

but to suggest that having some limited editing is not useful is just stupid.

just another sarcastic, insulting comment that tries to be humorous in a sitcom type of way.
at the expense of having any real insight/reason about the matter at hand.

Having read over the thread, all I saw is it was you who started being insulting.
If you want serious responses, express yourself seriously too.
If you start insulting people, better be prepared to get a witty answer.

I find it perfectly right to read over one´s post before pressing the submit button.

If you don´t like it, that´s your personal opinion, but everyone else should be able to voice his opinion without being called dumb or whatever too. And you voiced your opinion without being flamed at before, so please grant this right to everyone else as well.

your reply is a classic example of the non-productive flames that are in every thread of this board.
you didn't bring up a single fresh perspective, just had to add your own flame. i have seen you do that all
over the board, altho you are certainly far from the only person.
just cuz you contribute some nice maps
to the games doesn't give you a right
to give everyone attitudes and feel like your in some high school clique or something.

you're so distracted by trying to come up with a "witty" flame response that you ignore, or fail to understand simple concepts stated in my messages.

-----------------------------------
Having read over the thread, all I saw is it was you who started being insulting.
-----------------------------------

i started?
by recommending an edit feature? its insulting to suggest
that the current forum system is not perfect as is?

let's have a little "reading comprehension" here.

-----------------------------------
If you want serious responses, express yourself seriously too.
-----------------------------------

you failed to see how serious my messages have been?

let's have a little "reading comprehension" here.

-----------------------------------
If you start insulting people, better be prepared to get a witty answer.
-----------------------------------

aard starts in with the "witty" answer that was just a regurgitation of gilt/sleepwalkers suggestion.
basically that if you encourage people to be careful that will solve whatever problems editing can solve.
he starts with "here's a tip:" and directs the whole message to me as if i have been spamming up the boards myself, just because i suggest things would be better if people can edit.
it is quite obviously a sarcastic message.

let's have a little "reading comprehension" here.

if you guys dont want suggestions on features DON'T ASK. don't make threads about suggestions if you can't take them seriously and without being insulted someone might actually HAVE some suggestions.
yes i know this thread is not an official suggestion thread, but there ARE some, and suggestions are almost always flamed if they get any response at all.

-----------------------------------
I find it perfectly right to read over one´s post before pressing the submit button.
-----------------------------------

are you following this thread man?!
the whole point here is that there is more to it than that, furthermore, you can't make anyone do it. Passa even added punctuation to my point by even SAYING that he won't even try.

let's have a little "reading comprehension" here.
maybe even just READ things in the FIRST place.

-----------------------------------
If you don´t like it, that´s your personal opinion, but everyone else should be able to voice his opinion without being called dumb or whatever too. And you voiced your opinion
-----------------------------------

that is what *I* am saying man!
it is obvious from the "witty" responses that people are suggesting
I am stupid or ignorant for proposing something that is obviously a good feature in every other forum community.

let's have a little "reading comprehension" here.

Yes, I am aware some of you like to think you are superior to other communities.

-----------------------------------too. And you voiced your opinion
without being flamed at before, so please grant this right to everyone else as well.
-----------------------------------

whether you agree that i have been flamed or not, it should be totally
obvious that i FEEL like i have been flamed.

let's have a little "reading comprehension" here.

i am flabberghasted at how little you seem to be able to comprehend in this discussion.

you can't really be that bad. there is no way.

i guess its just the clique mentality you are in. you are obligated to support your group no matter what they say and no matter what any opposition they receive has to say.

you know the group of supporters/contributors here would be MUCH MUCH larger if you guys didn't have such bad attitudes non-stop about almost every issue.

I am not sure what your problem is, and why you go insult people over such a small matter.

As makke said, if I feel I have explained myself clearly, and then people go call me stupid and other things, I tend not to take them seriously anymore and just joke about it. Or in this case, where the person just continues ranting on randomly, I will start ignoring them. Enjoy.
