Linux users excluded from tricking-fun?

by makkE on 05/07/2005 14:40, 50 messages, last message: 06/06/2005 01:04, 4711 views, last view: 05/04/2024 16:49

I have made a trickjump map for cube, including strafe and riflejumping (using the kickback to jump higher).

While having it tested by several people, we have noticed, that linux users have a far harder time in trickjumping than windows users.

In linux it was reported that riflejumping will only really work with 300+ frames, while on windows every jump is possible at way lower fps.

I have recorded two demos to demonstrate this. This jump on aard3 is the easiest riflejump you can do. While the windows demo was recorded at 60fps (vsynced @60hz) ,the linux demo was recorded at ca. 200fps.
So while in windows, the physics seem to rather independent from fps, it´s a whole diffrent thing on linux.
Also, in the linux demo, almost every 2nd rifleshot just dissapears ?!
It seems that either the linux and windows binary are diffrent when it comes to physics, or linux and windows do some things very diffrently when it comes to fps.
(note that 3rd button emulation was off. In linux, this feature makes the first mouse button react with some msecs delay, but this time it´s not to blame)

Now, I probably won´t release this trickjumping map, since linux users seem not to be able to enjoy it at all.

This behaviour has been reported on several diffrent distros/computer setups.

see for yourself:

It´s not that big an issue for actual gameplay (though it can be on several maps in 1on1 instagib) I really wonder why this happens. Days of building my map seem to be wasted, coz everyone should be able to play it, not just those on windows :(

i was testing in a 64x64 map with only enough geometry to test (blank room with a gap in the floor, or a ledge), so i was getting 400-500 FPS with a wqd of 60ish.

CC, I have not released it yet, but will do in a few days maybe (need to fix some issues like ceiling height for the high-fps users)

Oh by the way there´s a really good tricking map out there called kkjump2 by kreim, I got it on a pub. Features strafejumps only, but very tricky and some good ideas in it.

OK, where can i get that??? you guys are being very informative

Sorry I don´t know myself where to get it, I´ll mail it to you. As said, I only stumbled across it on a pub.

#39: rocketjump

by CC_Machine2 on 05/22/2005 21:08

OK, ive tried more rocketjumping using heightfields, and got these results (going upwards to a ledge):

19-19.5 cubes height: no suicides
19.5-20.25 cubes height: suicided
20.5 cubes height: no suicides
20.75-23.25 cubes height: suicided

I can seem to get past the 23.25 mark, whats the record for rocketjumping to a ledge?

it seems as if the higher you want to go the more often you need to suicide

question for whoever coded the rocket launcher: would you go the same distance/height using a rocketjump if you suicided compared to if you didn't?

that is from ground level between 2 parallel walls

#42: your map

by CC_Machine2 on 05/23/2005 21:29

thx, got it

P.S. im fascinated with the rocketjump, but cant get up to the 3rd ledge on 'basic rocketjumping'. ive sent you a demo of my failure

i dont know what im doing wrong, or maybe your map is too hard, i havent even tried the advanced rocketjumping

oh and why is everyone ignoring my mesage (#39)?

you need to try different jump/shoot timings. that really matters. shooting right before you jump as opposed to right after yields vastly different results.

as far as I know the really highest jumps result from firing and jumping at exactly the same time, and pitch down.
The third "basic jump" ain´t really easy, but with a little prctise you should get it every time.. there´s a real hard "straight up" one in the advanced course later ;)

as to #39, i seen it, thanks for the research, i will try out those figures in my next tricking-map stuff :D

#47: my figures

by CC_machine on 05/24/2005 19:14

dont forget my figures in #39 were between 2 close vertical walls, and i had to shoot a rocket when i was right close to the wall to get to the height (after i had taken off from my first rocket-jump)

#48: sauer..

by CC_machine on 06/03/2005 17:26

lol have you tried riflejumping in sauer?

reply to this message

#49: I tried rocketjumping...

by Flamie on 06/05/2005 21:01

on the default map on saur with the new client (released yesterday) under linux.

using quad, shields and jumping just after I fire the rocket I jumped.. high..

lets just say I was watching the entire map floating in the air at about 50% of my screen size :D

now, that's rocketjumping.

I even succesfully landed on one of the two pillars on my 15 seconds long fall back to the ground :)
