Help creating a new mod/standalone game...

by jen01 on 01/26/2005 03:04, 36 messages, last message: 06/26/2005 07:36, 8353 views, last view: 05/03/2024 08:38

Does any one want to create a mod for cube...
I know I would if I had the;
Talent, expertise, time, resources, knowledge, patience, skills, help, money, computer power, applications, artistic flare, ideas, concepts, support, political immunity, linguistic skills, charm, potential to actually achieve something, prospect, reliability, organization, and finally not doing my final year of schooling, meaning the difference weather I get into university ( do a games programming course ) or not ( ow crap )
I propose that we as whole (the cube community that has some type of game making skill) come up with a definitive idea that is cube...
An idea for a game that is so original so fare out there, that it will redefine the FPS. It will know no boundaries; it will become a Consept itself.

Yes cube is a great game at the moment, with the multiplayer scene. But the single player aspect is really just to test the multiplayer maps...
I propose that every body and anybody create a single player version of cube that would be just as good, better, than the multi player.
Less is more...
Nothing graphical, just good old fashioned game play and story line. Its all about the ideas and simplicity of this game that would make it great.
Just think about it…

Yep, but unfortunately URLs of contents hosted on nasty free webhosts often change :(

So the central mods hosting with rsync mirrors looks promising.

DriAn pointed out that my webpage is down... i've put it on 3 different "mirrors"... a year and some month later there is only one out of two that is still valid. Lol, that makes an average of about 60% URL breaking per year for those free webhosts, i knew they're crap so i took 3 different, but at least i'd hoped that one year later there would still be 2 alive out of 3. And the one that survived was the second of my mirrors list... dawm, i've bet on the wrong one ;)

Bored of reuploading and reuploading and reuploading again, bought a domain, will buy some wepspace... at least in some month i'll enjoy the serenity of a nice single easy to type/remember URL that doesn't break.

About unstable Cube, it'd somewhat like BigCube for the 2002 version. Seems like a good idea, as the amount of new Cube stuff since 2002 has increased a lot so it'd be a good time to make a new Big/unstableCube

From my experience, no one is going to host, take care, etc., of something you made. Not for long I mean. And I'm still here after all, there's no point to bother about Orb at this point - that's what I'm saying.

(omg, I think I performed more crimes against the language :o now that's a DEAD sentence)

Well, looks like there is no other alternative to professionnal hosting when it comes to web-hosting of large downloads. For maps and small file sizes there's no problem, like spentron hosting some guests maps, or other proposing to host a forum + map upload site, as that isn't too much bandwidth-hungry.

About hosting mods/maps with additionnal content, i think that we need things more distributed and dl-resume-friendly, like jigdo, P2P, rsync...
I'll remove my mldonkey-shared directories of mp3 and DivX to have only one shared directory and put inside all the Cube mods i have, and see if that can help a bit.

On an ideal situation where most Cube ppl'd use their donkeys/mules/bittorrent mostly for sharing Cube stuff we could even provide mirror downloads links as ed2k links or torrent files.

If the only things that still needs to be available via HTTP are html pages, small jpegs and maps without included music probably many people will volunteer to give a bit of their webspace for that.

Forgive me again for talking about Orb only, I don't care about the other mods. Straight to the point - I don't think that a torrent download is needed for the game itself as the site currently hardly reaches half of its quota (3gb/month). I agree this might change in the future, but I think it will more likely "sleep" for an year until the next release. Of course Orb is free software, you can do what you want, I'm just telling the statistics.

On the other hand, I want to make animation. Even avi-compressed, with some parts of it missing, and whatever tricks I might come up with to reduce file size it's going to be big. Torrents are the most optimal solution to this I think. We'll see :)

Sorry, I think I lied, now that I think of it it's probably much much less, even less than 0.5gb. I can't give the exact number because it's been three months and the numbers are reset at the beginning of the month. Again, sorry I lied but the statistics for January must have been 0.15 and somehow I thought of it as 1.5. Upon revision I think there's no way that I've made 1.5gb traffic with this small thingy, which doesn't hold any feminine beauty.

So, an Orb torrent is not needed now.

pxtl and i created a site just for hosting mods, maps and more, you just have to create a user, but inorder to submit a mod you have to ask one of us

http://cube.snieb.com

the site is still a little buggy. we appologize for any inconvince.

Video like Red vs. Blue?! Hell yeah! Too bad Cube doesn't support different skins/models for different players...

Perhaps this would be a good thing to figure out- I remember Rick asking about seperate models for his Bots, so he may have a stake in this, I'd love to have it available in CL, and every other newcomer to Cube asks for this. Perhaps it would be worthwhile for all the interested parties to pool their ideas and time and just code them. Bear in mind that all the monster sprites, excluding the hellpig, can be used for multiplayer, b/c that's how they were intended to be used.

how do u edit models in/for cube?

reply to this message

#30: Re: Model Editing

by tentus on 02/13/2005 19:18, refers to #29

Most of us use milkshape, q2modeller, or blender. There is a plugin for 3dMax, if you're rich, and there's probably a few others but those pretty well cover it. Search the forum for anyone of those names.

Remember when editing that lots of Cube users have lowend machines, so we shoot for low poly models. Not that it's forbidden to make detailed models, but something simple or cleverly done will be more universally accepted.
