Alright, here's a little experiment that should prove Aard's point:

"the rifle is certainly more useful in some situations than the chaingun... if someone is moving quickly between occluders at distance, you will only really get one shot in. The rifle is more useful there."

There's a lot of bullets, but you will find the rifle much more useful. The map is BIG, so I kept the details to a minimum, and the lights look like crap, but you can't do much better with a map this size.

All feedback is welcome, and who knows, it might actualy be fun with 10+ players, though I did not have to chance to test it with that many players so far.

hello
Sorry for my imperfect English
I am French novice player... I find cube is genial but I seek explanations in French for playing better there....

Gautier, you are not our first French player. We actually have many, now that I think about it. Search the forum and you will find many French-language discussions.

Maybe it's time to start thinking about internationalising Cube? There are so many German and French players.

Internationalizing: i've started using gettext on my own Cube. I don't know if Aard would want to internationalize Cube itself, as that adds some more code (however i found gettext is the tool that adds the least amount of code for internationalization), and i don't know how gettext behaves when used with VC++.

However, IMO internationalizing Cube isn't something very important, as the amount of text is somewhat minimal. The most important things to translate are the documentations.

Hmm.. I don't know.. I've seen some excellent free software out there with very basic documentation, guidelines and online tutorials only. Also there are some other difficulties, for example the most useful feature of the documentation is console refence, to me at least. Even if you translate that the user will still have to type the commands in English.. which isn't so bad but the more I think about it the less motivated I become.

A brief introduction (with length that will not frighten the guy who reads it), or the so called survival kit (maybe not so, but I saw that expression in the Blender docs and liked it:) may be useful. If Aard wants to make something like that I'll translate it into my language.

about console commands: in my testing of gettext, i didn't translated the commands, as this would break scripts compatibility.

About the menus, it's trivial to make a localized version.

About strings coded into Cube itself, there aren't very much to translate, i think that while the menus and documentations should be translated, it isn't very useful to translate "x fragged y", "x joined team y", "map x uploaded to server, type getmap...", i'm doing it more to learn gettext than for a real need.

I have zero interest in internationalization. I have never understood the concept. Frankly, if you are french or german, and you can't cope with a few english words and HAVE to have everything in your native language, you should be ashamed of yourself. If your foreign language skills are so pathetic, it might be a good time to start working on it rather than running away all the time.

#49: Indeed, english is the international language

by D.plomat on 12/19/2004 14:25

I think people that asks for this are:
-people with pride for their dialect (french often have, i think some german too)
-kids that can't read english... they'd better do their english homeworks than play ;)
-very lazy people that refrain from RTFMing if the docs are in a foreign language, at least if the docs gets translated we could avoid them asking FAQs in a badly written english.

Eventually if many ppl ask for it and i've some time to kill i might translate some docs, but most often they're asking for the software itself, and then it's more a 'cosmetic' option than a feature.

Just make a few lists of alaises people can drop into their autoexecs. Seriously, what would the moderately serious player need, just a few commands.

For example, spanish commands:
alias "map" mapa
alias "weapon" arma
alias "mode" modo
alias "skill" habilidad
alias "password" contraseƱa
alias "saycommand" digaorden
alias "sendmap" mandemapa
alias "getmap" obtengamapa

Or something along those lines. I dunno, I'm used to the commands at this point, and have no need to bind special commands. But for the average gamer the whole expirience will go smoother if you can have the basics in your own language. Russian software has taught me that all too well.

ja, I realize that, but but as is the page is hard to see- only my family computer, not my personal computer, is online, and it's at 800x600 resolution, so very little of the page is viewable. I was trying to do him a favor, in the likelyhood of him being on a low-end computer.

Not that I have anything against the layout, it just doesn't allow for too much to be viewed at once.
