Dam Small Big Cube

by jcdpc on 05/02/2004 14:19, 49 messages, last message: 05/23/2004 04:17, 13622 views, last view: 05/05/2024 18:29

I left the "n" off so it a beaver home instead a curse word. Anyway DSBC (damn small big cube) is a project that D;plomat and I thought up. I'll collect the maps and maybe write an autorun script, but I need mappers to make absolutly sure that their site and every site they know of is on my list, because thats the list i'm collecting maps and stuff off of. The Cube part of big cube will likely be under 60mg ...
I'll do the Cube part of big cube (map collection, menu updates) as long as somelse can do the linux part. Also we need some little cds.

i get the error message, but it still works. just replace bigCube with cube. the bug cube you downloaded is a dead project. I'm currently working on a new one, but it wont be finished for some time.

you use windows? open up your cube folder and select everything and then right-click and copy. open up your big cube folder, right click and paste. replace everything except menu.cfg

As far as i know the DSBC project's goal is this:

You walk up to camputer with a completey formatted HD. you pop the disk in,install, restart, and then you have linux and everything cube-y on that machine. (and what else would you need on a computer? :) )

#42: Not quite...

I believe there's no install phase in mind (just using a liveCD), but instead it works like a console game - just turn the machine on with the disk in.

Still, it'd probably be a biatch to reconfigure your ISP settings everytime if you wanted to play online.

is an autoconfig for that possible?

In this scenario, you would most likely want to play on LAN - and this is autoconfigurable, as long as DHCP is used on that LAN (probability 99%) =)

i was going to use damn small linux as the basis of the linux part.

As Thalion already said, it'll probably be easier to use catalyst (read the docs, but actually i don't have time to put my hands at it :( )

It will probably be more efficient too because Gentoo is an opt-in rather than opt-out system, as using catalyst you can prepare a minimal text-based system with only the X server + Cube on it.

About the hardware autodetection, there's probably a way to include the same autodetection as Gentoo live CD's, it does a pretty good job for network cards.

Then we'll have to make some kind of autodetect script to load the DRM modules and modify the XF86Config corresponding to the card found by lspci | grep VGA. We could start by including the modules for nvidia, radeons, voodoos and intel(onboards i8xx) 3D cards (eventually Matrox'es, i don't know how they are with Cube?) to cover a max of hardware

i think i will be leaving dsbc to someone with gentoo then. i don't have the bandwidth to get it.

Alternatively, check out CRUX (http://crux.nu/). Tried it a few days ago - it was impressive =) Small, neat system, easy to install and configure (if you don't mind vi as your primary config tool, that is). Not sure about their LiveCD creation tools, though.
