It's one thing to dream of such a thing, another thing to call development dead, though.

All that Frosty mentioned is completely possible, if that is the main goal of a project.

Never said it wasn't possible.

Like I've said before, I know this seems strange, but I think Sauer development needs to end. Eihrul is the only one that I know of working on it, and he's busy with Tesseract. Sauer has been hanging like a loose end since Trooper edition imo. The right thing happened with Cube 1: once development of Cube 2 started, Cube 1 soon wrapped up with a strong final release, then all focus was shifted to Cube 2. I think the same thing needs to happen here with Sauer and Tesseract. I can find reviews of Sauerbraten from back in the CTF edition era, and at that point, Sauer ruled open source fps games by a longshot until Nexuiz Classic came along. IMO, Cube's devs have not been really competitive in the open source game 'market', preferring to do something non-traditional and unique. What do you guys think?

end development once and for all so we no longer have to hold out a sliver of hope!

What I mean is, let Eihrul move on to focus on Tesseract, Instead of asking for Sauer updates. NO amount of Sauer updates will bring it into this 'era' of open source fps games. Cube was the best of its kind in 2005. Sauerbraten was at the top in 2008-9. Red Eclipse is making a really good attempt to modernize a Cube 2 game, but it will be limited so long as no one moves to Tesseract. Now I'm not trying to argue that we NEED to modernize, but I recommend we leave Sauer as-is and modernize with Tesseract. Just my 2+ cents

It seems you both missed the goals of Sauerbraten.

Just to get this straight: you define those last couple posts as "hope"? I don't wanna see you in your hopeless state then...... :P

#23: Tesseract

by Speculant on 10/25/2015 16:11

This is the first time I've heard of Tesseract, and all I have to say is WOW! I thought Sauerbraten was good (which it is), but Tesseract is so much better! I think that all active development and new feature integration should move to Tesseract with Sauerbraten development sticking with just compatibility updates and making sure the game runs on all modern hardware (which is basically how it is now with the SVN).

The point of Sauerbraten, as far as I know, is to be a fast-paced multiplayer FPS with online co-op map editing that supports a VERY WIDE range of hardware. Sauerbraten is so incredibly scalable, it will run on a Pentium 4 with integrated motherboard graphics all the way up to the latest 6th generation i7 with a 900-series NVIDIA GPU. That's only half the point though, not only will Sauerbraten RUN on both those machines, but it will LOOK GOOD on both machines. Players on such an incredible wide range of hardware can play the same game with each other online, competitively, and both be satisfied with the graphics and speed of the game. I believe that this is the true point of Sauerbraten, that it scales so well.

Tesseract is the next step up from Sauerbraten; where Sauerbraten was once the next step up from Cube for people with higher-end hardware, Tesseract has now filled that position as the next step up for people with higher-end hardware. Cube filled a needed role as a scalable, stable fast online FPS while Sauerbraten was being developed. Now, Sauerbraten is that scalable, stable fast online FPS while Tesseract is being developed. Maybe in the not-so-distant future, Tesseract will reach such a point of optimization and a new project will arise, pushing Tesseract to that position that Sauerbraten currently fills. Who knows.

Some people actually care about gameplay, so Tesseract is worthless to them.

I can never understand why Tesseract got rid of Sauer's gameplay xD The older versions which were compatible with Sauer were perfect. Or at least just keep the Sauer maps and fast movement. At least this makes Tesseract perfect for gameplay modders :)

Sauerbraten is already Sauerbraten. There is no point in having another Sauerbraten, as Sauerbraten is a better Sauerbraten than a not-quite-Sauerbraten. Is that tautological enough?

In answer to your question, yes. But I am wondering, would a Sauer-compatible Tesseract really be worse than Sauerbraten? I didn't mean to start a flamewar; just wondering.
