Instagib?

by sonic20x6 on 08/30/2012 23:15, 65 messages, last message: 12/04/2012 17:11, 26577 views, last view: 05/17/2024 05:43

Why do all the populated servers in Sauerbraten have to be instagib? I don't mind instagib, it's just all I see in active servers are instagib servers. I'm sick of the gamemode. I miss being able to use my other weapons instead of the rifle! I miss actually having HEALTH which doesn't kill you in one shot. I get lucky to find some regen capture or ffa servers, then a person will come in and ask if it can be changed to instagib, in which I'm like "NO! There's like 5 other instagib servers out there, go to those."

What is with everyone and instagib? What happened to variety?

Limited range would be interesting. A timed explosion or once the rocket reaches a certain distance from the 'radio controller' it goes in a random direction.

Did you know many of the regularly full servers lock their gamemode to insta ctf, regen capture, etc (or even insta team venice)? I'd say the concept of letting the serverlist balance itself has turned out not to work so well.

And *please* do not judge the balance of rockets based on your experiences in regen capture. Regen capture is just an awful, horribly unbalanced gamemode, that imo, should be removed altogether, or majorly redesigned.

That\'s because insta is more simple than FFA.

Real Arena-Core is FFA,insta is Just For Fun.

It's not only regen capture. It's also tactics, effic, normal capture and virtually all modes that offer rockets.

My problem was that people here were using their impressions from regen capture as an argument to nerf rockets.

I have no problem with the balance of rockets in all those other modes. Rockets don't actually dominate them.

You're better off using all weapons in effic. I'd even say chaingun is stronger than rockets in effic.

Rockets don't dominate in classic capture like they do in regen either, as firstly, they aren't as abundantly available. Seeing half a dozen players sucking rocket ammo from a regen base simultaneously sound any familiar? That actually multiplies the base's ammo output by the amount of players camping it. Even for one player at once, a classic capture base yields less rockets per second. On top of that, classic capture doesn't encourage camping at bases, which removes all the kills caused by spamming rockets at other bases that you get so frustrated about half the time.

As for FFA modes, try relying your gameplay on rockets only and tell me how it turns out.

Awesome, thanks. I hardly leave the poor bastards chance to respawn. It just goes spawn dead spawn dead spawn dead. Was a very entertaining experiment, though actually not my taste. Usually I prefer direct contact + shotgun.

That's the domination in FFA for you, getting the guy with the armor and the ammo off the throne with a fresh respawn is harder than anywhere else, removing rockets wouldn't change that.

Relax, rockets already have been set a little slower as they did in SVN. So it's a bit easier to dodge them as they travel with less speed through the playgrounds.

Rocket speed has not been changed at all. Stop spreading misinformation.

Weapons are amazingly well balanced in Sauer. Of course not in every mode on every map with every kind of opponents, but overall! In a noob-regen match, rockets can be overpowered on some maps. In a pro-ffa 1on1, machinegun can be overpowered. In a mixed CTF match, rifle can be overpowered. Etc. etc. But overall, including all the modes and all the maps, it is perfect the way it is.

You just said what I thought :)

The weapons are fine the way the are.

But the factors that mostly imbalances the gameplay are:
* number of players.
* size of the map.
* time left (of current map)

FFA with 8 people playing in tiny maps (like douze, metl*) for 15 minutes is just f**ck. Nobody stands a match that long. Most players ragequit in ~2 minutes. LOL

The opposite is big maps + few people + 15 minutes = boring.

I wish that the server admins could set a considerable number of max players for each mode.

Something I really miss in Sauerbraten are plain old CTF matches. I play Sauerbraten since 2010 and I never have seen nor played a plain CTF match online!

Why don't you try to start some? Maybe you find some equally minded.

How do you miss it if you have never seen or played it?

Back in the good old days of ctf- and trooper edition, it was definitely getting played (but just not 24/7). It often gets more considered as a mode which benefits most on clanwars, completions or similar events (like PSL league). It's also a very tough mode for newcomers.

My humble opinion: don't make rockets slower or less powerful, "fast and painful" is the whole idea of rockets. Instead, just reduce splash damage area. We have grenade launcher for splashing anyway.

Also, it seems like a good idea to make people using grenade launcher and shotgun more.

You got a point there. Grenade launcher and shotgun have been useful weapons for a long time, as long as maps were relatively small and often narrow. Now with the focus shifting towards larger and way more open maps, the occasions in which nades and shotgun are actually useful get clearly diminished.

Grenades get launched further in SVN, so it's been changed to the situation already.

Shotgun could have less spread though, to make them work on afurther distance also.
