So Now What

Now what's going to happen to the Cube community? Are we going to see a bunch of personal projects that never try to go beyond a personal toy, or a bunch of personal projects that all try to gain widespread acceptance causing a gridlock?

I wouldn't worry so much about "mods" splitting the cube community, usually these things auto-organize in that the cool mods get the attention they deserve and most die out. Usually more cool comes out of it than not.

As for me there will be for sure another official cube release, it is just I have split the codebase for "cube 2" (I had to) so I need to get off my ass and add those most urgent fixes and features to the old cube codebase.

In general, don't look towards me to "lead" the cube community. I just create what I think is cool stuff, and leave the rest to whoever wants to use it. If the cube community is strong enough to be self supporting, then great, if it is not don't expect me to do things to attract people to it.

That sounds sweet! Writing the engine from scratch or something?

not from scratch, but enough to not make sense to share the codebase with cube (1).

cube 2 has an entirely new world structure (if cube was a 2-directional heighfield, then cube 2 is a 6-directional one ;), and that also almost completely changes the rendering, physics, occlusion, editing, map/loading saving etc. Everything else from cube is retained, e.g. already in my current early beta the cube monsters run around happily in the new world structure, and multiplayer works as before.

6 direction, so does that mean diagonals will be a basic feature of the engine, instead of a slight hack on the end?

Oh and are we looking at the possibility of room-over-room, or is that still a pipe dream?

Sounds good anyway :)

Sounds like jibberish to me, but nice jibberish ;)

Anyway, that SP episode. Anyone wanna join me in making one? I've been working on a new texture set we could use for it. I'm thinking around 10 maps based on the texture set, and lots of testing and quality assurance.

I'd almost definatly be intrested (though I'd need to warm up my mapping mucsles again)

This thread took me aback, I won\'t even try to reply to every issue.

Firstly, pushplay\'s first post has a collectivist quality with its criticism of personal projects. Why would you assume personal statements are bad? Why would you assume a collective effort is inherently better? I started mapping specifically to make a personal statement and creations. If I have also found something with that in addition, that\'s nice, but not required.

Now Cube .. it seems to me the biggest problem is lack of players. Sure, we play each others\' stuff, but almost everyone here is here because they want to create something. But for the community to be self-sustaining and *seem* successful, Cube must be at least somewhat known and discussed. Development is pivotal, but I don\'t think you\'re going to get enough developers to have that big of a presence, so there also needs to be players -- people who come here or wherever regularly to check for new stuff, etc.. I could be wrong, of all games Cube could attract a huge developer community because lots of people are interested in making games(possibly the majority of these \"developers\" would be more like casual mappers, but it would still make for lotsa stuff).

No one seems to be willing to pull Cube under their wing. All the established games with mapping tend to have their own communities. It would seem that mapping for Cube would open your maps to the greatest number of people, but there\'s no way to make (the right) people aware of it since it\'s not one of the popular games. Alternatively, general gaming communities are swamped with retail game interests of all kinds. For example, I see that even though PlanetQuake is hosting Underworldfan\'s reviews, it appears that Cube content was partially censored from a recent PQ front page update announcement for the site (I\'m assuming they were sent the same text as Func_Msgboard -- wow they saved 5 words or something, I\'m sure everything there\'s more important -- and note that one frontpage map release announcement probably gets more players than any addon Cube map has gotten). About the only other support is from Linux peoples.

I can understand Aard\'s reluctance to do anything to promote it. That\'s called pimping for a reason. It tends to suck and couldn\'t contrast more sharply with the pure joy of creating. But, some kind of additional break appears to be needed.

Piglet:\"the cube community needs something to shake it up, like a new release or a largish mod, or\"

I see no evidence that works.

As I have written, one does not necessarily make maps for the benefit of others. However, there is a point where the lack of interest just seems absurd.

***
As to the issue of these seperate efforts, there may be some assumption merging is difficult due to Death Illustrated. DI replaced ~all media so it makes no sense to not keep it seperate. But mods and projects with commonality are still advantageous to cohabitate (although someone still has to do it). There may be some precautions needed regarding filename conflict. I think Verbal was on the right track with \"Big Cube\" -- a single big bunch of all the good stuff -- although I doubt there\'s 25 MB of stuff everyone should want yet, and there\'s more to it than just making it available. It doesn\'t have to be just one bunch though.

As to Cube itself, still really like it (but people look for \"everything\" rather than the currently missing part of \"everything\"). Cube 2 -- still a floor and ceiling? That would be 3 Ds each.

I just want to prod people into thowing all their changes into one pot and seeing what happens. Because I'm not going to fire up a different exe just to play a map slightly differently.

You're too quick to cast me into such an Orwellian light. What did I ever do to you?

I am gonna refrain from geeting into details, its not my style, i will leave that to people like spentron and pushplay, who are better at it than me. :)

All i really want to add to all thats been said already is:

I think the Single player experience in Cube would benefit significantly from 2 things that have already been discuused by many here in depth already.

1. Faster monsters with better AI (not complicated AI just quicker reactions really)

2. More Weapon choice. At least 2, ideally 3 brand new weapons. This is important, IMHO.

Lastly, i want to say long live Cube! :)

I definitly agree with your 2nd point. Cubes weapons are designed for DM. I personally think cube is THE best deathmatch available now. Quake3? Ut2k3? pfft. But anyway, SP is a bit different. It would benefit from having a couple of weaker weapons, and maybe a superweapon of some kind. All the weapons in cube right now are all equally powerful when used correctly.

About getting an SP episode together, i think there's a lack of players because there really isn't that much to play right now, if it's the SP that makes you tick. That's part of it anyway. There's just about enough to attract developers, but someone who's just in it to play SP is gone after a few days.

Mappers who are interested in the episode: mail me (disturbed@tiscali.no)

#38: And another thing

by Skaus on 03/27/2003 10:00

Large parts of the community is speaking german, posting in german, and making their websites in german. The community is pretty small, and i think it's bad that it gets split up like this. If those pages were in english, the cube community would be a little biggeer methinks. We could use being more 'international' =P
