So Now What

Now what's going to happen to the Cube community? Are we going to see a bunch of personal projects that never try to go beyond a personal toy, or a bunch of personal projects that all try to gain widespread acceptance causing a gridlock?

why does it have to be either, if you are refering to franki 's project (and maybe even my own dabblings with the source code) with this statement then I must say I dont see how such projects will disrupt the mainstream cube community (if their is such a thing -- hmm i have no idea why i just said that)

I know that in my case being able to mess around with the source code is re-awakening my intrest in Cube and is presently drawing me back (yet again) into the cube community.

I see no reason that sideline projects should mean the death (or even the cutting back) of the core community. Though that said the community seems to be dying down slightly as of late and I think this might be at least partially due to a lack of change. As such foray's into offshoot projects 'should' be beneficial to cube as a whole, rekindiling a freshness that it has lacked recently.

Phew that was a lot longer than i planned, but it was a rather open ended question :)

Community dying? Hmm, then who were those I've been constantly fragging for the last few days? =)

Seriously enough, I really hope that Aard will consider taking small enchancements from community-made mods and incorporating them into 'official" Cube, despite of what the readme says. At least, it'd allow to release a new version - even if the only thing there that's new is that new trigger type. =)

There's not a whole lot that's happened to cube lately. I think it's about time for a new release soon. But hey, it looks like the interest for source modding has increased, so lots of cool stuff could pop up :)

exactly, the cube community needs something to shake it up, like a new release or a largish mod, or at the very least a pack or two of maps, then we should be able to restore its former glory

(Hmmm... I seem to be talking like some kind of religious leader, oh well)

It suddenly came to my mind that there weren't that many "megawads" (or whatever you call them) for Cube, and those that exist were made single-handedly. How about you mapper guys do something in cooperation? Some single-player 20-level episode, or something? That'd surely attract quite a lot of interest from (supposedly) dying community, eh? =)

sounds quite cool, the only problem with this style of mapping is that it can be difficult to keep difficulty, style etc. consistent (but then again thats difficult with a single mapper)

Cube doesn't have all that many weapons or monsters, so you've pretty much seen everything during the first couple of levels in an episode. So putting levels after eachother in a series is kinda pointless IMO. But it would be cool to have a pack of single levels, with some serious playtesting backing them, and maybe some new textures etc. There's not much more than 5 sp maps of good quality, and it's kinda boring playing those over and over again.

I'm not saying that these little mods will be the death of Cube proper, I'm saying that the little mods will be the death of each other. DI has it's own little following (mostly seperate from the Cube community actually), and I'm sure that Frank__i's mod will attract fans, but how many people are going to have time for mods that only play differently on a couple maps?

What I'm suggesting is that people get together, get a little cvs going, put all the mods into one game, and see what happens.

hmm i'm not sure if i'd quite agree with you Skaus, there is a fair amount of allowance for variety in such a simple engine, in fact it almost enforces originality. Now that i can compile the cube source i'm working on some features (like timers, extra script controls etc.) that should allow for more control and originality in mapping (mainly singleplayer) as to me it seems like one of the best areas for impovement.

pushplay: fair enough, sounds quite good, i'd certinally be happy to share my work (I intend to anyway) so it would be a sytem of intrest to me. However I currently dont have enough knowledge of how to setup cvs (or even for that matter how they work) so I personally couldn't set it up. Anyone else have the skills?
Oh and sorry I misinterpreted your post slightly.

Smart map architecture + some advanced features like scripting would do the thing, IMO.

CVS: http://www.cvshome.org/ is used to allow multiple people to work on the same source files, and minimize cockups. It's pretty intelligent in how it merges versions and only rarely requires a human to sort out which version stays. The interface is pathetic, but you can get a good frontend: http://www.wincvs.org/ .

You could either find someone to set up and host a cvs server for you, or beg sourceforge to be part of their totalitarian plans.
