Voice announcements in Sauerbraten suck

Hey guys, hey gals,

I just got the cvs repo and was surprised by 1) pre-compiled linux binaries and 2) wonderful (player view only afaik) weapon models.

The voices ("quad damage", "health boost in ten seconds", "fight" etc.) still suck badly though.

I'll try around and maybe come up with something better. This is what I have so far:

Comments/criticism welcome of course.

Right now I'm not even sure what "style" I should pursue. Enthusiastic? Serious? Cool? (no) Happy? (no) We'll see..

PS: I put the "suck" in the thread title to attract people with it. :)

I got a headset from Microsoft yesterday, and the first thing I did was get it to work with Linux (I only had to change the audio settings to use "USB Audio"), and then attempt some Sauerbraten voices to test out its microphone.

Audacity is great. :]

tentus_: the normal sounds are very good (and ogre-like =), you need to do something against the wind-in-mic at the end of some sentances/words.

It also should be more loud. maybe try and normalize it and see if it still will sound clean?

The robo-styled sounds not so good. (the score! echo is neat =) )

RealNitro: O_o f*** change your player for the purpose of listening to sounds.

jdfhsdconorhsfjd: (first few tracks) very good, not loud enough and the wind is disturbing though. I like the edited version, but the wind-in-mic *must* be avoided... experiment with some soft materials/cloth in front of mic i'd say.

I also can't download the encodable.com files. the first links worked though.

I don't like Health%20Boost.mp3 at all O_o

noerrorsfound-on-windows: too much noise and could use more 'melody'. But the voice sounds good.

PunDit_: healthboost2.mp3 is nice, but the word 'respawn' makes it too long. and I would like more of your stuff.

Sounds? Is there some background noise I'm not hearing? The voice is just me making a gravelly-sounding (something like that...) voice, lowering the pitch, and adding a slight echo. I've only got Audacity and I don't know how to do anything amazing with it.

I was just messing around, anyway. I wasn't submitting it for consideration as a replacement for Sauerbraten's, since there are a few people who can do better with an audio editor.

I haven't listened to the sounds so I don't know if there is air blowing past the mic.

If there is, though, consider placing a thin piece of paper or something between your mouth and the microphone. It'll prevent that issue and might make it seem a little more professional.
(Again, I haven't listened to the sounds, so I don't know what they sound like now... :P)
