Halo-like maps?

by tman_elite on 12/01/2007 06:21, 104 messages, last message: 09/03/2022 15:41, 60725 views, last view: 05/05/2024 13:11

I was just wondering, wouldn't it be cool if some people made some maps similar to those from Halo 2 and Halo 3? For example, I think a level like Valhalla from Halo 3 would be really cool. Also a map like Lockout from Halo 2 would be sweet. There's a whole bunch of Halo maps that would make great Sauer maps.

I'd try to do it, but I would fail miserably. I suck at mapping stuff...

I want someone to re-make the Pacman maps for Sauer as 3D spaces. Or port every know Doom map over. Or Super Mario Bros. 2, now wouldn't it be cool to have a Princess Peach playermodel?. ;]

Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with taking inspiration wherever it may be found, but, as Picasso said, "Bad artists copy, good artists steal."

It seems to me that you can be inspired by the Halo maps if they move you, hate them and parody them if they don't, but you should "steal" the substance of the original, regardless, and try to create something even better.

If you've finished Halo 3 on Legendary you'd know the story has definitely not ended ;)

tentus you bring up a good point there, Halo maps just wouldn't work in Sauerbraten, plain and simple. The pacing of both games is incredibly different (as well as core gameplay). You'd need to make serious modifications for some of the maps to work.

I don't really think this is true. In sauer, you run fast. In halo, you run slow. In halo you hop on a mongoose, ghost, banshee, warthog, etc. Suddenly you are fast again...

Which is ironic, because with all that augmentation & powered armor, they should be able to move quite quickly.

Well actually all that power-armor would probably slow you down... Anyway that's not the point. All I'm saying is that the maps should be fine because you run faster than in halo, but in halo there are other ways of getting around (vehicles, teleporters or mancannons, etc.)

Actually, the whole point of it is to make you faster and stronger, so if it slowed you down, they'd have dropped the project.

Remember, it's powered, and the "Spartans" are bio-augmented to be able to take the faster, more powerful movements/response times. It being slower would be absurd, which is something that always has bugged me about the Halo games.

From a logical standpoint the slowness is pretty bizarre, but it makes sense in the context of the gameplay. Halo rewards hit-and-run tact over super reflexes- cover protects your sluggish ass, and allows you to regenerate your health.

Games like Sauer, on the other hand, reward the supersonic-rambo style where whoever has the fastest triggerfinger is king, until he gets killed. There's nothing inherently wrong with either of them (although halo's weapons are ill-suited to the playstyle- the shotgun is really just worthless).

So what you're saying is that Sauer players are essentially always in a vehicle...

ROFL. That puts the weekly vehicle-feature request take on an entirely new and humorous light. That just made my night, thank you.

Upgraded armour going slow?

I know a game where armour makes you go fast!

#98: Vehicle mod...

by IllvilJa on 02/28/2008 18:26

Actually, it would make sense to create a mod/total conversion of Sauerbraten, where players instead of running around on two (or whatever the number) of legs actually ARE vehicles.

The sauerbraten engine does have some rudimentary physics built in already and if one makes enough compromises with vehicular realism, the changes to the Sauerbraten engine required to support these vehicles would be minimal (if any at all).

Urban Assault (released 1998) contained nothing but vehicles, and the ingame physics were a joke compared to those found in games like Battlefield 2 or Team Fortress 2 but never the less, the game were a blast. So, Sauerbraten should have very little problems being the basis for a really fun vehicle game. Two teams with turretless tanks and AA vehicles together with some choppers would be enough.

So the requests for vehicles in Sauerbraten is not that absurd. Actually, the fact that the requests pop constantly is an indication of SOMETHING constructive out there knocking on the door.

So so much for the joke. But it was a good one, except I prefer tracked vehicles rather than legged. :-)

(Sorry for being offtopic...)

I think if sauerbraten ever were to have vehicles, they wouldn't be like the little halo ones (mogoose, ghost) but they would be tanks that actually slow you down, but give you increased health and firepower.

Anyway, that doesn't really matter.

team fortress2 is a joke.
I really dont see any vehicles coming into Sauer unless someone spends.... a while working on it.

You prefer tracks to legs? Huh, I always enjoyed mount/vehicles that have a bit of rocking in them, the really big mechs and such that thump around. Gives you a feeling on empowerment when each step shakes the ground, in my opinion. But I guess that's a taste thing.

To get back on topic, I think I'm going to try to make a Valhalla-based map. It will suck, I assure you, but hey, practice makes perfect. And Valhalla is pretty basic, just two identical bases with some hills in between.
