Speedmapping!

by Aardappel on 11/21/2002 17:39, 78 messages, last message: 01/20/2003 01:08, 48464 views, last view: 05/18/2024 20:59

I used to do a lot of speedmapping in the quake community which was a lot of fun. The aim: make a DM map (or sometimes SP) map, maybe with a certain theme, in 100 minutes.

Cube with its speedy editing and lack of compilation is perfect for speedmapping, and I don't know why we didn't do this before.

So lets find a time when most people can be on irc together for 100 minutes. if succesfull we plan on doing this weekly. Again, the idea is simple:

- show up on irc 10 minutes beforehand and tell the organizer you are ready to participate. If you participate you are expected to be familiar with the basics of the cube editing process.

- the organizer (me) comes up with a theme that has to be followed. This may include a certain style of geometry, layout, textures, gametype etc. Noone can check if you aren't simply modifying or reusing bits from maps that you already had, this relies on the honesty of the participants.

- after 100 minutes time is up, you MUST now dcc the organizer your map within 5 minutes or so. No excuses ("I need to texture this, place lights blah blah"), if your map is unfinished after 100 minutes then so be it. It is up to you to manage your time and make sure you have placed all needed entities and done playtesting if needed. You name your map "smXX_YYYY" where XX is the number of the speedmap contest (e.g. "01"), and YYYY your name (e.g. "aard"). The map may only require a .cgz/.cfg, no extra custom media.

- organizer collects maps and makes the pack available for download online.

- we all play them together (optional :)

There is no rating, this is not a contest, we're just trying to have fun. If your map is prettier than the others without cheating this just buys you bragging rights :)

Maybe later we'll do some coop editing speedmapping, but this will require more preparation.

I'd be happy to do SP next week. I did DM the first week because I wanted everyone to "warm up", as there's always people having trouble with the concept.

doing SP will mean you have to spend more time placing entities, and allow yourself for atleast 1 playtest. As I did this time, I will usually urge people to start focussing on entities at the 20/15 minutes to go mark... if you have time left you can always spend it on detailing.

If these speedmaps go well and people are getting "experienced" enough with it, I'd like to try speedcoopmapping :)

cool, it will be good to do some sp as thats what im more experienced with. Twould be fun to do coop speedmapping to, but it could be a logistical nightmare (maybe the timescale would have to be a little longer)

I'll see you all next time (oh and if anyone was wondering who the hell chicken64 was on mirc, it was me, hope i didn't confuse too many people :)

#46: SM02 quick review

by spentron@PP on 12/11/2002 23:19

You guys have created some excellent maps here in the time alloted.

Aard has finally graced us with a SP Cube map, so it's his best yet ;) . It's huge, solid though fairly easy.

Piglet came up with a nice twist and a also a solid map. Don't kill the last monster so you can finish properly (he forgot the extra monster stuck away somewhere).

SirLiveAlot shows us his best work yet outside of Death Illustrated. It's not huge but it's 100% quality. Love the escape theme and the big trees.

Pushplay's is the other huge one. The knight-baaul labyrinth is excessively long and gets a bit boring (hold down the fire button) but it does have a neat part in the resources dynamic (I entered the section next to dead) and the other three sections are excellent. It is also a solid challenge. The chunky terrain section at the end worked out great, good challenge packed with goblins that hide in the little hills.

Mine, well I guess it doesn't matter I left it unlighted in the face of these. The lighted, couple extra entities version is at http://spentron.web1000.com/cube/misc.html , top left corner if anyone wants it though. I may put it in my short mapping intro as an example of what can be done in about 12 minutes (the earlier 18 minute quote included stopping to send my entry to the speedmapping).

Umm spentron, im pretty sure that i included in the story that their are two ways to finish, one is to kill everything (note: this is not a bug) and the other is to collect the carrots, the idea is to use the one you can do fastest

In case your intrested \/

Currently my best time is about 60 secs (by collecting carrots)
By killing all monsters ive managed about 80 secs (simpler but slower)

Another good mapping section (though less well turned out, more people come next time
/me tries his best to look threatening, and ends up looking stupid)

Both the others maps seemed pretty good (probably better than mine :( ), shame my internet was playing up to much to play them (now hows that for ironic)

Cya next week
