Just in case you have too much framerate...

Sauer has almost, kinda, sorta, maybe, possibly gone a tiny bit next-gen:

http://sauerbraten.org/screens/soft2.jpg
http://sauerbraten.org/screens/soft3.jpg
http://sauerbraten.org/screens/soft4.jpg
http://sauerbraten.org/screens/soft5.jpg

If you'll note: no more sharp edges on the shadows, and they no longer clip geometry.

We're just a few tens of million of dollars of budget away from being a poor man's UT3.

6600GT and 28fps. Now I know what you meant with "expensive". =D

But nice, very nice!

Actually, performance is much better now.

Running at 1920x1200 on my 6600GT, I get 50 FPS on complex still with shadowmapping on.

FPS numbers are much higher if you don't have a 27" widescreen monitor and need insane resolutions just to stop from seeing 1" wide pixels. ;)

This is the funny thing, because I only develop on a 6600GT, Sauer's performance always seems to stay good on geforce 6 level hardware. Wonder why. :)

Ahh, so this is Shappowmapping instead of stencil shadows, right?
In other words alpha-mapped textures now also cast a correct shadow?

They could if I wanted them to, yes, although the model rendering doesn't have code yet to handle rendering only the alpha channel of a model's skin.

Quick, somebody buy the man a 7600GT!

Or two. SLi optimization would be nice. :D

Is anyone else laughing to themselves about a real shadow coming from the bauul model? How old is the bauul now?

No real irony. Skilled artists who donate time to small open source projects are just rare. Usually they all want to work on their own projects, rather than work according to someone else's vision. Though, the same might be said about programmers...

Haha, good point. I wonder how sauer would look if you had a P III and an ATI Rage... =D =D

But damn those shadows... *faints, too*

I remember on my old computer, upgrading from an FX 5500 to a 6600 LE (which sucks more, fewer pipelines). It wasn't long after the shader stuff was implemented in sauer.

Using the default settings for the shaders, and at 1280x1024, my frame rates increased from roughly 8 to 80 respectively... I would think due to the better shader implementation in the 6000 series. I was a happy boy, that such a minor upgrade made such a major difference. I didn't have to run it with -f anymore.

You probably won't need extra framerate to run these shadows anymore... I supercharged them:

Note the framerate. Screenshot taken on a 6600 with everything on.

I will begin checkout of CVS soon :D

I will test on

GeForce Go6200 (Overclocked, it runs perfect)

1024x600

shaderdetail 3

Well, Am I the only one that has the sounds and music playing way to slow? (IE: incorrect sample rate?)

Oh, and here are the screenies.

I used 640x400 instead :P

Using different /shadowmapsize's increased/decreased framerate alot.
