How is Sauer with a GMA 950?

by Chaos on 07/31/2007 09:48, 37 messages, last message: 08/07/2007 08:55, 10945 views, last view: 05/04/2024 02:39

I'm looking into buying a laptop for college like every other stereotypical college student, and I love Sauerbraten.

So naturally I want to get something that can handle Sauer ideally at 1280x800, and won't look like crap.

I found a decent Core 2 Duo with GMA 950 integrated graphics and I wanted to know if anyone had experience with Sauer on it?

But you see, I don't hate Windows for no reason. I will not explicate, because such flamewars are not productive, but there are well founded reasons. Additionally, I really like *nix environments, so there is a positive as well as a negative. Can we talk about hating on people for bad spelling and punctuation instead?

You're right, Linux *had* a long way to go before we could use it for gaming, but that was a while ago.
Wait, you meant to say "has"? Ohhh... Well, why didn't you say so?
And by the way, why aren't you using your spelling checD'OH! *slaps self in forehead* I forgot you're not using Firefox.

"You're right, Linux *had* a long way to go before we could use it for gaming, but that was a while ago."

Imo it still does. For a casual gamer its fine, it runs the most popular games under Wine at decent speeds. But for people with high powered rigs who squeeze every last frame out of their system, running their favourite games under Wine and having to play on the lowest settings and enjoy strange quirks and performance problems is not fun.

When Linux has strong publisher support, then we'll talk about its eligibility as a gaming platform. On that note, I use a laptop with Ubuntu and MythTV with the MythGame extension to run all my console emulators on the TV screen with a controller, its great :)

I have a macbook with a GMA 950. Sauer doensn\'t start without providing the -f0 flag (no shaders). Simple maps run without problems (metl2,3,4), but aquaduct is unplayable, and the village rpg map crashed sauer (and took my Ubuntu Feisty system down with it).

Passa speaks the truth. Although it's great how id Software and Epic Games continue to port their software for our enjoyment, there are many more companies out there releasing popular titles with no support for the GNU/Linux operating system. Running games in Wine sometimes works, but you usually have to make a graphical or gameplay (or both) sacrifice.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl, which I've played a lot recently, is slow when using DiretX 9 mode. Although "Static lighting" is good enough for me to enjoy the game, many people just won't want to give up their pretty dynamic lighting in the game.

Oblivion needs HDR lighting off to play, although still looks nice without it, in my opinion.

SWAT 4 runs great as long as you have "Bloom" off and "Bump map detail" set to anything under High, but you can't make a full turn in the game due to this bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6971

This means, to turn all the way around to the right, you've got to push Esc and drag your mouse over to the left side, then push Esc to go back to playing and you can finally turn. This must be repeated whenever you want to face a new direction. The game is literally "playable", but it's just to annoying.

I've successfully misspelled "too" in the above post. GREAT SUCCESS!

Yeah, Passa is, mostly, right. I was just taking a stab at ATIFANBOY for his misspelling of the word "has".

Have you tried "Oldblivion"? It's a hack but made oblivion run a lot faster.

The other part I noted with Oblivion was that it wants a lot of RAM. Going from 1GB to 3GB made a big difference.

Why do you waste our time with your grammar? It boggles the mind just how bad it is. It's almost deliberately bad, I have trouble believing that you aren't trying to sound like a Neanderthal.

ATIRULE: What did you expect? it's ATI!

I am using a GeForce FX5200 with bloom and I get 30FPS, and I use Linux. With water reflections, shaders, everything on, and it runs fine.

In metl4, I get about 25-30FPS with most effects turned off, including music (I prefer to have my music scrobbled to last.fm), and I'm running a GMA 950 with 512MB RAM.

"30 fps thats LOw"

ATIRULE: I know, but until you provide some screenshots, with your card that has everything on, I have a hard time beliving that you get any more.

Also, you have the worst grasp of the English language I have ever heard.

Oh, and guess what? My card is older than yours, and my computer is way slower, so I suppost you have just been owned? No? Okay.
