How is Sauer with a GMA 950?

by Chaos on 07/31/2007 09:48, 37 messages, last message: 08/07/2007 08:55, 10976 views, last view: 05/18/2024 06:12

I'm looking into buying a laptop for college like every other stereotypical college student, and I love Sauerbraten.

So naturally I want to get something that can handle Sauer ideally at 1280x800, and won't look like crap.

I found a decent Core 2 Duo with GMA 950 integrated graphics and I wanted to know if anyone had experience with Sauer on it?

800x600, with -f0 and -a0, it runs relatively well (~30 FPS @metl4). It slows to a crawl on levels like thor and skycastle (which have lots of water and object, respectively). I'm on a Core 1 Duo with 512MB RAM, 2GB swap, and Xubuntu Linux.

better performance on Win or Lin?

I had hoped to do straight Ubuntu, but I'll install Win 2K3 just for sauer if the GMA 950 has better windows drivers.

Don't buy a laptop with an intel graphics chip in it. Look for an nvidia geforce go.

Ubuntu isn't that fast as far as distros, but it's not the slowest either. I recommend Xubuntu, which is Ubuntu with XFCE. Much better for gaming. (Either that or get ELive, which is loads faster.)

I'd like too get one with a dedicated 7600GT (256MB), but it's nearly $200 out of my budget range.

The new 8600GT Go is lame. It does NOT beat my "old" X1600 when it comes to OpenGL. And who cares about DX10 anyway? ;-)

Thread-autor: The MacBook offers this same setup, I bet there are some in the Forum with that machine which can tell you what you get from it. GMA950 is fine until it comes down to gaming, but it IS possible...

I was talking about the 7600GT not the 8600GT.. and MacBook is REALLY too expensive or I would get one.

I've come to a decision... I think. My laptop will either sport a GMA X3100 or a GF 7600GT. It all depends on budget right now.

I'm hoping the X3100 is at least a step up from the 950.

If you go with a GMA, get a TON of RAM. I don't care how much swap/virtual you have, the more physical RAM, the better. I found this out the hard way.

Or just go with the geforce go, you'll be far happier you did.

#13: a comparison

by CCmachine[Lappy]cookie#3 on 08/02/2007 11:10

intel 950:
pros: -cheap,
-works,
-doesn't use much power

cons: -not very powerful,
-NO occluders (so huge maps will be VERY slow, even on mine @640x480 with -f0 i get ~7fps in linux)
-linux drivers SUCK! i did a quick comparison looking at the whole of metl3 in cube, windows i get 40fps, linux i get only 14 :( also shaders don't work under linux.

geforce go:
pros:
-powerful
-works just as well in windows and linux
-shaders and occluders will be fine, so you can run big maps just fine

cons -expensive
-power-hungry; even when not using a 3d app (i hear you can lose 30 minutes+ of battery time)
-will make your friends envious ;)

i personally would go for the geforce for the power of it, but if you cant afford it and want maximum battery life possible for working etc, go for the intel, and dont mind crappy performance in linux.
BTW: has anyone tried the x3100 intel gfx on linux yet? i hear it's much better than the 950 :D

So you think I should dual-boot XP for gaming?

Your spelling has a long way to go too.

But you see, I don't hate Windows for no reason. I will not explicate, because such flamewars are not productive, but there are well founded reasons. Additionally, I really like *nix environments, so there is a positive as well as a negative. Can we talk about hating on people for bad spelling and punctuation instead?

You're right, Linux *had* a long way to go before we could use it for gaming, but that was a while ago.
Wait, you meant to say "has"? Ohhh... Well, why didn't you say so?
And by the way, why aren't you using your spelling checD'OH! *slaps self in forehead* I forgot you're not using Firefox.
