Idea for the waterfalls

For make the waterfalls more realistic you can add smokes or spatters particles at the fall like this : http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/58/flottebm6.jpg

Please look at my map:

I don't consider it "extreme", but adding stuff to the waterfalls makes a big difference IMO.

I prefer a nice looking map that also plays well.

Very nice map! I as well prefer nice looking maps. the only reason i like sauerbraten is because because you can make very detailed maps, even if nobody really pays attention to the detail who plays it

While we're on water-related subjects, I'll bring up the waterrefract issue again. With waterrefract turned off the water is transparent, which is quite an advantage in multiplayer. For example, on river_c:
waterrefract 1 (default):

waterrefract 0:

Actually, some maps are made just for looks:
http://quadropolis.us/node/715

"This map was not intended to run fast or with high FPS. It was designed to look "pretty". As such, I didn't add any weapons or ammo, no health or pickups.

Think of it as a demo map to see what the engine can do and how well (or poorly) your system can run it."

You could also play in wirframe mode to see where everyone is. Its really sad people care so much about their scores and not about having fun.

Wireframe not in edit is disabled in the latest CVS.

Bah, wireframe in-game.. so what? Imo, it would be harder to play with wireframe, how could you navigate the map properly? You'd get some advantages, but more disadvantages.

Everyone can turn off waterrefract, if they want. You don't get an unfair advantage, it's just a matter of personal preference. Yeah I know, most people don't know about this. But you can compare it to other games special movement, that was not intended, but you can still use it to your advantage.

The advantage is so neglible its not worth worrying about. This is why all the guns leave trails in the air, its an anti-camp measure.

Good luck getting many kills camping down there in river_c anyway, you'd see an ogro pass over every few minutes for a fleeting second, not long enough to kill them (in capture mode you spawn with green armour so good luck getting a one hit kill with a sniper).

It may not make much of a difference on river_c, but what about maps like aqueducts with really deep sections of water? I went into thirdperson and set the third person distance higher and from above water the visibility of the ogro with refract on/off is very different (at bigger heights it gets much worse).

@hampus: except those who are playing without shaders, and I believe a lot of Sauerbraten players are still using old video cards where the shaders are either unsupported or too much of a performance hit

So what if I modified my client to start me off with a few extra health points, or maybe give me some extra speed? The advantage is so negligible it's not worth worrying about, right?

if you really wanted too you can turn it back on. The point is not thed wireframe but rather what people do to win. I can easily replace all orgo models with giant red squares so that i would know where everyone is. However i would never do this as it makes it look like shit.

How silly is it that people will purposly make the game look worse just so they can win. There isnt even a global point system like that of BF2, its just a game and its supposed to be fun.

Get out of the thread if you don't have anything useful to say. The link you gave isn't even me. I let the thread die because it became clear you were intent on attacking me personally rather than refuting my arguments, and now you bring your garbage into here. Wine is not even related to Sauerbraten so I'm unsure what you wish to prove. If I did that, what difference would it make here on the Cube Engine forum? I'm sure not dumb enough to at least use a proxy if I'm going to attempt mass vandalism of a wiki, and from my Wikipedia contributions you can see I haven't made any vandalism edits. If you have some problem with me, try e-mailing me instead of bringing such trash into a completely unrelated thread.

what the...? how anybody can post this garbage? oh my... could you *PLEASE* turn back and follow the subject of the topic?
I think this forum is not made for attacking anybody.

by BigLots on 07/12/2007 20:05

I think we should indeed get back on topic, poeple can do a lot of stuff to win, but it's a game for goodness sake the point is just to have fun. Most of the kids I know don't actually cheat in game-play, they just do stuff in edit mode for the heck to see what they can do to the source code. If "cheating is just used like that it's fine, it's the poeple who cheat to win who are pesky.

reply to this message

#31: Also.

by BigLots on 07/12/2007 20:11

On the whole subject of water reflection/refraction I just turn it off because my graphics card is old and I freeze up when it's on, just saying that what noerrorsfound said is true, many poeple are still running on older hardware. I know quite a bit of poeple who do the same as me.
