"Intels and Sauer" thread

by djGentoo on 06/25/2007 14:15, 24 messages, last message: 07/03/2007 18:53, 5057 views, last view: 05/01/2024 20:07

After being posted numerous times in the General thread and not receiving any attention, I've decided to post a separate thread. I know other people have been having trouble with running Sauerbraten on an Intel GMA950. Can anyone help us?

I have an Intel 82945G 64MB

2.80, 2.80GHZ Intel Pentium D 1 GIG ram

I have had problems with Sauerbraten in the past, but the Current CVS gives me no problems, except a very rare with water reflect/refractions on and calclighting.

I usually have the water off anyway so I get more FPS.

The only problem with Sauerbraten is that it is locked on 60FPS, and when I change my refreshrate to 75Hz, the maximum FPS is 75.

I have tried /maxfps 500 but nothing works.

So, Sauer is pretty much fine for me.

Turn off VSync in your display driver settings.

the HZ is how many times your screen redraws itself each second. If you've got an old/laptop LCD, most of them only go up to 75, so anything above 75 is faster than your monitor can display anyways.

I'd just leave VSYNC on and enjoy a tear free Sauer that displays as fast as your monitor allows.

Quin: Vsync is not in my driver settings :(

BTW: GeForce Go 6200 in my Sony Vaio is locked on 60fps too, but I think it is in the drivers to turn it off.

lemme check...

Yep, I turned it off with the GeForce go!

BTW, Is there a reason beyond "The GPU is to slow" that when turning bloom 40 on, I drop to 7 fps when I had 200 before turning it on? The other FX only bring me down 30-50fps, but bloom brings it to it's knees!

Bloom brings my 7800GT or my 8800GTS to their knees as well. But then again my whole computer is messed so I might not be the best benchmark..

Imo bloom only looks good at low values anyway (higher values blind me heh) and at the low values the performance/visual quality tradeoff is not worth it, at least for now with my specs. If there was no performance hit, I'd enable it but in the meantime I'd rather enjoy a silky smooth FPS.

The effects other than bloom don't lag me, just bloom

It's not just your computer, my 7800GT doesn't do real well with bloom either.

Well, it could be our computers :P

for those who have it working, is occlusion culling? i noticed if i look at a blank wall int he corner of metl3 into where the rest of the map would be my FPS drops like a brick o.o

Sauer's ocullsion culling is not as effective as Cube 1's.

You card has to support it too.

isnt occluding more important on older cards though?

Yep, but the older cards are so old they don't support occluding in the first place.

Occlusion culling is going to become irrelevant soon anyway. The average PC is becoming faster, especially in the GPU department, thanks to Vista and its DirectX powered Aero interface.

>Yep, but the older cards are so old they don't support occluding in the first place.

hardware occlusion queries (what sauer uses) are supported in ATI and NVIDIA cards since 2001 (ATI Radeon 7500/8500 NVIDIA GeForce 3), so i would say even old cards support them.

it's just intel that lags more than half a decade behind and just now added occlusion query support with the GMAX3k

so what?
on the contrary the data sets are growing faster than the CPU/GPU power. the desire is still to display as much geometry per frame as possible, so a technology that allows to discard of a large chunk of the scene that does not HAVE to be rendered will NEVER become "irrelevant".

ROFL

In reference to Sauerbraten, it will. I wasn't referring to other engines. I thought that was pretty obvious.

Laugh all you want, but at the end of the day its true. Base Vista machines now ship with standalone GPUs in most cases as opposed to crappy integrated solutions with XP machines. All the big name PC manufacturers are doing it, and its obviously going to mean more and more people will have proper GPUs rather than integrated graphics.

Not every thread on these damn forums needs to be turned into an OS war or just another generic flame war.

he has a point.

But, doesn't sauer not run properly on Vista in most cases? Are we bothered (yet)?

note: that last sentence was intended as "are we bothered to support vista(yet)" not "are we bothered about vista" entirely ...

why? even the crappy Intel GMA 950 we are talking about here passes the "Vista Premium Ready" certification.

sorry that wasn't my intention.

The thing with most programs is that you never want to have the minimum specs. With those specs the program will run but it will either look like crap or ran at like 1/2 a FPS.

Uh huh, but using Aero with all the glass etc enabled on a GMA 950 would not exactly be the best computing experience would it? Anyway, I'm not the managing director of Dell or something, so if you want to complain about them putting real GPUs in PCs with Vista, go complain to them.

"But, doesn't sauer not run properly on Vista in most cases?"

Install drivers. Whala, Sauerbraten runs, just like every other damn Windows operating system.
