guns that modify the map

by collinizer on 05/23/2007 00:52, 34 messages, last message: 06/12/2007 12:13, 8992 views, last view: 05/05/2024 06:31

I understand this does not fit in the pure DM paradigm that Sauerbraten aims for.

To have multiplayer editing and not use it during play seems like a bit of a waste.

Are there any mods out there which contain guns that can modify the map during play?

I'd love to help out if there are.

I know sauerbraten doesn't need too much of a physics engine but this sort of functionality could bennifit from it because it would create projectiles and chain reactions.

if anyone has already started, I'd prefer to help them instead of reinventing the wheel.

different guns could have different effects depending on the texture/material.

I've never done any modding before, but I have done a considerable ammount of cross platform C++ and openGL coding (in an attempt at my own engine).

there are other things we could do, a much simplified lighting system could still work.

Are you thinking about something like fracture?

there was a tribes mod where you could add mapmodels like blocks and sandbags with a gun. might be cool to build an insta-base of sandbags.

Are you thinking of gmod with this. It is basically just a playground for creating random stuff, it is alot more fun then it sounds.

Different guns can spawn differnt objects and some guns are tools that weld things together or script the object.

If you want somthing like gmod for sauerbraten your going to have to basically write and entire engine. Sauerbraten lacks a large amount of features that would be required for this to happen.

Uh.. no? I'm pretty sure the Sauerbraten engine is already far in advance of the Source engine in that field. One can do co-op map editing, one can not. You go and think about that one for a second..

On, sauerbraten? For some reason i think that would look really stupid.

It is funny on css when some fucker has a porn spray and some idiot walks up and stares at it. Ive gotten so many kills that way. Its even more fun to spray over the porn spary all the little fuckers are staring at. They get so mad and then try to kill you.

When I used to play CS, I had a spray tag of a crouching terrorist. Put it on the wall behind boxes and people try to shoot it all day long.

Of course, that was the old CS - not source. I don't play games as much as I used to.

Something like a trip wire with a visible red laser would be nice. Something like the one from one of the 007 games. Someone bettter a coding then me would need to make it though.

It's been done. Wasda did that in his EDM mod back in the day.

garry's mod is about building with entities, sauer is about building with the map. These can be brought together, (technically they already are), but sauer offers little in the feild of entities because nothing except players sync online (hence no doors or coop). Maybe if this were addressed, more complicated entities could be added, but just adding them for the sake of them being there would be pointless.

GMOD is not a map builder, it is just a play ground to make random shit.

Hammer is the map builder for css, and its really not that bad.

ok so i'm back with a new computer. My motherboard on my P4 finally died last week and I was out of commision until I got a new box. now i'm rippin with a amd64 and a 8600 gts.

anyhow. I got linux going again. next step is compiling sauer from source so I can start modding.

the first step in this mod should be creating a gun that erases whatever block it hits. that will be a good easy starting point.

OK, got the source compiled. I'm going to start poking around the source to get to know it a little better.

is there a flowchart to help explain the heirarchy at all?

the source browser is - http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/opengrok/ - I wonder, if that could be installed on the sourceforge page? (if the sf.net cvs wasnt already slow enough)
