SERVER ADMINS: STOP DISABLING MASTERMODE

by eihrul on 02/17/2007 19:19, 50 messages, last message: 03/19/2007 22:47, 12418 views, last view: 05/18/2024 21:50

We put this feature in the game for a reason. And it's annoying as hell to see half the servers disabling it.

Why? Because every time I go in and attempt to play, there's always somebody cheating, or somebody just teamkilling everyone, AND NOBODY CAN DO A DAMNED THING ABOUT IT.

I'm sorry, but this is pretty stupid. If you're worried about people abusing mastermode, THEN ENSURE YOUR USERS USE IT AS INTENDED: have a MOTD informing people to /setmaster 1 immediately if necessary. BUT DO NOT DISABLE MASTERMODE.

There are far more legitimate users than assholes, and mastermode is supposed to empower them to resolve stupid situations. So if responsible players would stop being lazy and start taking mastermode first, no problems.

In this case I'm really not giving a choice. I *WILL* start removing servers from the master server if this continues.

We have discussed this issue to death, and made it clear why we believe, over all objections, that it's best the way we intended it to work. But people are pretty much shitting on our work, so...

If u'd give sauer more administrative functions like rcon, a simplified vote-system, map-votes or anything else that would make an admin's life much easier disabling master-mode would not be neccessary.

Why not have both, master mode and a way for the server owner to log in to become the master?

Then what is the problem with being kicked out from your own server?

people are morons and don't RTFM.

Oh, and if you want to get some assholes off your server, I have the perfect method. Everyone ready? This is pretty earth shattering stuff here... RESTART THE GODDAMN SERVER!

Superdreadnought, other than shadow's amazingly simple solution, you've got to see the merits of Sauerbraten's unique server admin management system.

Look at other games on the net, and see what happens to under adminned servers.. you get cheaters. With the mastermode system, while it is occasionally abused, the majority of the time it is used by people who ordinarily wouldn't have admin powers to kick cheaters from servers.

I really think you're missing the point here. Disabling mastermode is worse, if you're not there then cheaters can't be stopped.

I think this whole 'OMG CHEATERSZ' talk has to stop. All games have cheaters. Considering Sauerbraten HAS NO CHEAT PROTECTION, I think its cheater to player ratio is pretty damn impressive.

Anyway I'm done ranting..

I agree to the developers here, but if there was the possibility to directly connect as master, the need to disable mastermode was gone.

/connect 80.214.15.15 <masterpassword>

I got kicked from my own server 2-3 times and have no other possibility than to unplug the thing. Happens not often, but from time to time.

I like the 'connect with master password' idea. Then you could just bind a key and hop on your server as admin..

another possibility would to prevent that localhost (127.0.0.1) could be kicked at all.

Almost every server I connect to tend to have at least one cheater (perhaps I'm particularly unlucky). It is frustrating as hell not to be able to kick that person.

consider ppl using dedicated servers.

i still cant understand y u r crying. whats the problem in just adding a kick-vote system or an rcon-functionality?
due to being democratic, votes cant - unlike the master-mode thingy - be abused by a single person and the opinion of the majority of the players on the server will be put into action.

You must put into account that there are also unnamed people who won't even know how to vote,So the vote will mostly fail.

I started another thread ("disabled mastermode. An Alternative Idea") where I proposed an improved voting system together with the idea of "kick"-voting. There are some also statements of the developers to this.
I just mention this here to avoid two seperate discussions about the same topic.

#24: Some still active

by MeatROme on 03/07/2007 01:30

I haven't really taken a census,
but two days ago I still encountered a server that didn't allow me to take master.

It's that MOD by SuperDreadnought ... which is a pain anyway ... due to the flooding of the console with those stupid banners that get repeated every N seconds.

A MOTD is a fine thing (my personal server sends one too) ... but please - only upon initial connect; maybe even upon each mapload as a reminder (if you really think it's necessary) ... but this flooding is really inappropriate.

It\\\'s the server admin\\\'s decision how often they send (and even if they wanna send it at all) the MOTD.

Sauer\\\'s problem is a lack of different text fileds. Have a look at Enemy Territory. It got 4 different text fields (one for chat at the bottom of the window, one at the left side for kill-/death-messages, and two banner-areas which are in the center and at the top if the screen) additionaly it got a real timer displaying the remaining map-time.
I don\\\'t wanna say I could do it better, but I\\\'m trying to improve sauer by giving some suggestions on functions which are working very well in other games.

I got machine gunned in Instagib and kicked from a Server for no reason. Yes, quite annoying.

it is certainly NOT the server admin's choice whether to flood my console with useless crap. If it was, the feature would be in vanilla sauer.

this would *not* improve the game at all. That game looks horrible and is pure bloat.
