SERVER ADMINS: STOP DISABLING MASTERMODE

We put this feature in the game for a reason. And it's annoying as hell to see half the servers disabling it.

Why? Because every time I go in and attempt to play, there's always somebody cheating, or somebody just teamkilling everyone, AND NOBODY CAN DO A DAMNED THING ABOUT IT.

I'm sorry, but this is pretty stupid. If you're worried about people abusing mastermode, THEN ENSURE YOUR USERS USE IT AS INTENDED: have a MOTD informing people to /setmaster 1 immediately if necessary. BUT DO NOT DISABLE MASTERMODE.

There are far more legitimate users than assholes, and mastermode is supposed to empower them to resolve stupid situations. So if responsible players would stop being lazy and start taking mastermode first, no problems.

If this continues to be an issue, I may just start blacklisting servers from our masterserver than continue to disable significant features like this. It's just beyond annoying now.

Unfortunately it seems the same problem has extended to ActionCube as well.

I thought we weren't allowed to mod the source and then host an offical server with it? (unless theres a MOTD feature I don't know about..)

I simply hate being kicked or locked out from my own server. Furthermore a MOTD wouldn't help at all against players abusing master mode.

It was me who was forced due to sauer's incredible lack of admin features to use such a babarian method.

I simply cant uderstand why sauer didnt manage implementing some proper admin functionalities though it has been under development for more than a year.
The mapvote-thingy sucks ass, as it is too diffucult and takes too much time.
Why do we need a master-mode? What about kick-votes, since master is completely useless when the cheaters u WANT to fight have master status?
RCON would give server admins much more power as they could unlock the server from outside when sb has seized it. Additionally rcon would make it possible to code further sauer-independent mods basing on an external script that simply read the logs and send commands via rcon (this has been realized for Enemy Territory years ago).

I got to agree on restricting master having disadvantages, but it was the only way that could be easily implemented to give admins more power and make them master in their own house again.

the mastermode IS the admin system. The whole philosophy behind sauer is that sauer is that servers can be run by players that are actually on there, not by whoever runs the server (who might never be available). By using the setmaster command, its usually the more informed player who gets to be master, which is good.

If you want full control over your own server, don't make it public. Public servers are for the whoever wants to play, not you.

In this case I'm really not giving a choice. I *WILL* start removing servers from the master server if this continues.

We have discussed this issue to death, and made it clear why we believe, over all objections, that it's best the way we intended it to work. But people are pretty much shitting on our work, so...

If u'd give sauer more administrative functions like rcon, a simplified vote-system, map-votes or anything else that would make an admin's life much easier disabling master-mode would not be neccessary.

Superdreadnought, other than shadow's amazingly simple solution, you've got to see the merits of Sauerbraten's unique server admin management system.

Look at other games on the net, and see what happens to under adminned servers.. you get cheaters. With the mastermode system, while it is occasionally abused, the majority of the time it is used by people who ordinarily wouldn't have admin powers to kick cheaters from servers.

I really think you're missing the point here. Disabling mastermode is worse, if you're not there then cheaters can't be stopped.

I think this whole 'OMG CHEATERSZ' talk has to stop. All games have cheaters. Considering Sauerbraten HAS NO CHEAT PROTECTION, I think its cheater to player ratio is pretty damn impressive.

Anyway I'm done ranting..

I agree to the developers here, but if there was the possibility to directly connect as master, the need to disable mastermode was gone.

/connect 80.214.15.15 <masterpassword>

I got kicked from my own server 2-3 times and have no other possibility than to unplug the thing. Happens not often, but from time to time.

I like the 'connect with master password' idea. Then you could just bind a key and hop on your server as admin..

another possibility would to prevent that localhost (127.0.0.1) could be kicked at all.

Almost every server I connect to tend to have at least one cheater (perhaps I'm particularly unlucky). It is frustrating as hell not to be able to kick that person.
