#32: Me?

by conor-kirk-cookie on 10/29/2006 06:32

I am getting an amd...

I want something that has some overclocking options, so if in the future i have money to spare on some awesome cooling... (and when it is outdated :D) <- Chin

so what mainboard for that amd? ;)

Eew AMD's gaming age is over. Intel Core Duo FTW.

Don't overclock a damn thing DO YOU HEAR ME?! It voids all your warranties and ruins your hardware. Trust me, I overclocked a GeForce 4 MX 420 a couple of years back (when they were worth heaps) to like 200% its original clock speed and it fried. Probably my stupidity though.

My current PC was only overclocked SLIGHTLY (cpu from 3.2 to 3.4) and now its cpu seems ruined (it idles at 60 or so degrees celcius now)

Intel Core Duo gg.

Is there an intel core duo that would cost about the same as the amd that I wanted?

Gee, imagine that.

You didn\'t cool it properly.

Conor, what you should really do is read a few hardware review sites. Read a few reviews from people who know what they\'re talking about and you\'ll probably find that the core 2 duos overclock really well for anyone who knows what they\'re doing.

Well yes, I wasn't really surprised that my GeForce 4 MX fried, but my CPU has a custom Thermaltake cooler in it, supposed to be used for overclocking. My CPU USED to idle at a decent temp.. but something is severely wrong with it now. I guess the 5** series of Intel Pentium Processors are not all that great for overclocking.

Anyway, Conor, Intel Core Duo's are very cool, great performance in games, overclock (like pushplay said) very nicely, and are generally well priced. Try for an Intel Core Duo E6400, 2GB RAM, that Gigabyte motherboard I mentioned OR the newer Quad Core Gigabyte motherboard, thats good for upgradability.

For the pressing issue of a GPU, stay away from ATI if you want something to play Sauerbraten. REMEMBER ATI aren't that good value to begin with, and their drivers suck. So get either a:

- GeForce 7600GT (Some games won't be @ the top notch of quality settings.)

- GeForce 7900GS (This is the equivalent of a 7800GTX, so very fast, and should run current market games perfectly.)

- GeForce 7950GT (This will last you for a very very long time.)

All of the cards will run Sauerbraten perfectly (shaders and all), but the difference between them lies with different games, such as FEAR or Battlefield 2142. A system complete with the 7950GT and all of the components (inc 19" LCD and whatnot) cost my friend about $1800 Australian Dollars. Thats about $1380 American Dollars, so very good value for something perfect for playing games.

Good luck :)

You said you have heaps of money, why not just get all top-of-the-line hardware? Also, AGP is archaic, so use PCI-Express.

A GeForce 7950GT is top-of-the-line. Its bleeding edge.. and he didn't mention that he was going to use AGP with a new system.

by eihrul on 10/30/2006 02:03

I still use a 6600, and nothing else. I develop the damned game with it, so I can assure you that card, if nothing else, will run Sauer very well. Newer games? Nah, but it will run Sauer will all eye candy on.

6600's (no offence or anything) were dated on release. I doubt Conor only wants to play Sauerbraten (although a 6600 will still lag with anti aliasing and a medium-large resolution such as 1280x1024, in terms of 50 FPS being lag, which it is.)

There isn't a point in him getting a system that can _just_ run Sauerbraten now, and anyway, Sauerbraten is being updated all the time, in the future a 6600 will probably not cut it any more.

You think 50 FPS is lag?

You must be very lucky :)

I consider 5 fps lag...

I have always used Sauer at 1680x1050 or 1600x1200 on my 6600 and get a nice 120 FPS in metl4. But whatever.

Huhwha? When I had a 6600GT mine used to drop to 30FPS on nmp8_d.

Conor; its more preference really. In some games you won't even notice, in others its unbearable. For example in Battlefield 2, 40FPS plays fine for me, but in Counter-Strike: Source its hard to play with. Playing instagib with a low FPS is extremely difficult in Sauerbraten though.

When playing FPS-games online you should have a minimum of 50 fps, lower fps start to give you disadvantages.

I`m currently playing with fps of 25 to 40 and it`s very hard to aim precisely; can`t wait for my new MacBookPro to ship later this week. =)

Passa, if you look it that way, every card is outdated when released. There´s a reason there´s always middle-class cards.

And I agree with eihrul, I see nothing wrong with a 6600gt for Sauer, I am very happy with it.

Of course it won´t run great with 8x aa and 16x aniso-filter. but cmon, who needs that anyways?! Honestly does that little quality increase really justify the performance drop? I have both on 0 and I don´t see any reason to turn that stuff on unless I want to make a super-shiny screenshot.

Maybe you should have just ran your 6600 on reasonable settings, passa? or did you overtweak it?

No AA or anything and it lagged a fair bit, but the thing is I highly doubt Conor JUST wants to play Sauerbraten :P

I have another PC with a 6600GT btw, and it runs Sauerbraten fine, must have just been my card.. I have a 7800GT now so meh, runs Sauerbraten with AA and aniso and I get 199FPS flat (with fpsmax @ 200 :P)

Anywho like I said, Conor (I'm sure) will want to play current and next gen games, and a 6600/GT will not cut it and nor is it good value anymore (a 7600GT is similarly priced).

IMHO anyway :D
Of course my argument is all based on the Australian computer market, afaik its a bit different in the USA and Europe.

#50: The error

by TheDoctor on 11/13/2006 10:10

Pardon me if I missed it...

Did anyone actually address the error?

My lx box is not running at the moment and I am trying to play sauer on my win32 laptop. I also get the ...05 fatal error before the system is able to load.

Is there a fix?

btw my laptop is a Dell D800 with nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 and an Intel Mobile proc.

Thnx
