#12: specs

by conorkirk-where-is-my-cookie? on 10/19/2006 02:01

I already have, but here goes again

Dell XPS 200:

Pentium D 1.72 GHZ; 1.80 GHZ

Intel extreme graphics card 64mb

Anything else you need to know?

BTW: Windows xp professoional

also, it only happens when i try to update the masterserver or sometimes when i join a server.

It used to work with no problems on the same computer but now it doesn't :(

Maybe internet connection problems? I know Sauerbraten has always locked up for me when I try to update its server list.

Check your modem, open the necessary ports.. etc etc.

BTW That intergrated video card is definently the reason why you get lag.

Sauerbraten hangs on Mac OS X too if I choose to "update from masterserver" (at least on my OS X). I have to force-quit it then.

well, i have a picture of the empty chat messages

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/conorkirk/errorrrrr.jpg

also, my internet seems to be fine, as cube works, so do older versions of sauer, and every other 3d game i have, and the video card isn't a problem for other games (eg: Halo, doom 3, quake 4,)

This error is totally obscure.
Chances are your system is corrupt or just plain to weak to run the game properly.

Please check your console output,
the chat message should be printed there.
Since you see other text output there is no problem with the display functions.

Maybe the guy just said " " (=space character ?!?

The guy didn't just say " " because if i type a whole sentence into the chat box it comes up as blank on the screen (not in the chatbox, but where it says Yourname: )

The chat text is printed on the console.

Well, I would upgrade my video card, but i am lost trying to find a good half-hieght one that could show shaders and the new water and still get a god fps :D

This computer is a stock dell xps 200: and i looked up sauer's performance (minimum) and the only things a miss are the

Video card: 128 mb (thats why i asked about halfheight :)
I have 1 gig of ram

dual core: 2.79 GHZ and 2.80 GHZ (the processor speed almost hits the ultimate :D)

So, any ideas on that card?

Ehh not retail, its old now so not good value anymore. Try for a 7600GT, they're going pretty cheap. Or get a 6600GT on eBay, they are absolute bargains.

Anyway, a 6600GT will run Sauerbraten @ 1024x768 with a slightly sluggish FPS only in the RPG maps. In other words it is the lowest end card you can use to play highest detail in Sauerbraten perfectly without lag.

even the water?

6600GT

or would the 7600 be a better choice?

I have a great amount of money.

PCI??

Oh dear. There are no PCI video cards on the market powerful enough to handle Sauerbraten @ full shaders etc. Sorry but you've lucked out, do not past go, do not collect $200.

#26: turning it into...

by conorkirk-where-is-my-cookie? on 10/29/2006 02:38

Ok lets see, I really need a gaming computer so i am going to custom build one

is there anything wrong with: Processor:Athlon 64 3200+ (64-bit, 2.0GHz, 512KB L2 cache, 2000MHz HyperTransport bus, AM2
and 939)

GPU:

EVGA NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 256MB DDR AGP Graphics Card

after that: what mainboard should i get?

YUCK.
EEW.
That video card sucks hard.

And for gaming; get an Intel Core Duo E6400, 2GB DDR2 RAM, GeForce 7600GT.. youd get something like that for a bargain, and it would UTTERLY OWN THAT 5500FX. IT WAS OLD WHEN IT WAS RELEASED 3 YEARS AGO :(

Its slower than a Radeon 9600XT by far, and a 9600XT cannot run Sauerbraten on highest quality settings.

#28: would it...

by conorkirk-where-is-my-cookie? on 10/29/2006 02:51

Would it be that bad if i stuck with the same proc? I am trying to keep it as cheap as i can.

plus i like amd :)

so if i stuck with the proc and the GeForce 7600GT what mainboard should i get?

Get a descent gfx card first I´d say. The rest looks quite good to me. Then you can still decide if you want more.
Depends on what you want to play I guess. If it´s only sauer you want to run good, I´d say a 7600gt or would get you more frames than you could ask for ;)

I have a faily similar rig, with a 6600gt I get above 100 fps (100-180 or so) in all maps (krpg excluded) all the time on default, almost 199 flat if I tweak it to -a0 -f1 -b16 -z24 (without touching water variables).

On krpg the worst I get is about 50.
