I think this question answers itself.
In case it doesn't: Sauer comes with the source code so you can modify, experiment and learn with it, perhaps even write your own game. That's allowed and fine since that is what the source is for.
In theory you could make wallhacks, aimbots, invincibility and much more with it too, but I hope you can understand that most people hate it when someone fiddles with the source just to kick asses on some public servers. In the most cases people don't discuss much and simply give you a permanent ban.
But look at it it from their side: how would you like it when you frequently get killed like 2 seconds after respawn, regardless how quick, clever and skilled you are?
To sum it up: No, hacker clans usually stay secret because when they get public they usually get instantly a bad reputation and previously mentioned perma bans.
And no, "hacking" as in "modifications that give you an unfair advantage to increase your killing rate massively" are not allowed.

"1. Have a 'description' variable that can be set in <mapname>.cfg which is displayed below the preview image in the map selection guitab."
No, as far as I know, this has the potential of screwing all sorts of stuff up (mainly texture, but possibly others).
"2. Have a new file in /base/ for each map called <mapname>.txt which gets loaded when you mouseover the map name (just like the image) and displayed below the map preview image."
Best bet here, but I still don't really see a need if the screenshot is well placed.

Just out of sheer curiosity, Is the Aauerbraten map file type (.ogz) based on any other type e.g. the \\\".map\\\" from quake 2, Or is it completely original?

As both are completly incompatible with each other, it probably isn't from Quake2.
As far as I'm aware of, .ogz ame from the .cgz-format which Cube Engine 1 uses (and still can be imported into Sauerbraten).

Hello :)
While I play on this really nice game, I notice a very weird bug.
I am in Kubuntu 11.10.
Anyway, when I play on a server and then switch applications, I turn into a bot.
I've turned into 2 kinds of bots so far:
1. I turn into a bot-controlled player. I can still move and aim, but when I'm idle, the bot moves and aims for me.
2. I turn into a spambot that spams like **** when I'm alive.
I just wanted to point out this extremely weird bug, and I might find more bug-bots soon

1. Is there any text appearing in your screen which says "spectator"?
2. Have you really downloaded the official Sauerbraten, by clicking on the link just right of this website (or on sourceforge)?

1. No, there isn't. And, when I'm supposed to be speccing, I turn into an active player. O.O
2. Yes, I believe that I have indeed downloaded the official Sauerbraten. I downloaded it from Sourceforge.

If you want to make a video as Raz said, but you got no video recording program, you could have a look at this:
