I was just wondering if anyone can tell me why the Sauerbraten engine runs so fast and the C4 engine is so slow? From what I can see the C4 engine has lots more features, but it is so sluggish on my Vista machine and won't run on my XP machine. Sorry I've asked at GameDev, but have got no response.

I think you answered your own question: "the C4 engine has lots more features"

That's not an excuse though is it? C4 is supposed to be a game engine and yet its demos run slowly on a medium machine. I have played AAA games like Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2 on the same computer and they have lots of features, but are not that sluggish. Where as Cube 2 is lightening fast even on a machine that is much older than my current one.

Different priorities, I guess. I won't add features to the Cube 2 engine that won't run well for the majority of people who use it.

The use of "ping" is a bit misleading, indeed.
What the masterserver does do, is attempt to contact the machine on the given IP and sauerbraten infoport to verify it is running a server - if that fails the known error is given, else the IP is added to the list.
The adresses are also re-polled after an hour to keep the list size down and the addresses as up-to-date as possible.
The official masterserver (AFAIK) is a java servlet and it's precise workings remain somewhat of a mystery .. but the hungerburg perl script does what I've described and the black-box behaviour we see from the official masterserver doesn't contradict me either .. again AFAIK ;-)

That's a good philosophy to have. It has worked extremely well for Blizzard.

#11664: Performance Issues |

I know there are probably hundreds of threads like this, but lots of them have replies in jargon i dont understand.
Basically, my computer has a 2.66 ghz processor and 768 mb of RAM. I know this isnt the highest spec PC in the world, but surely it should run freeware like this easily, when i can run games like Dawn of War? But no, i get a horrendous 1 frame per second. This, as you know is unplayable. Does anyone have any idea as to a solution they could give, in layman's terms, or at least a step by step guide, because i dont see why im getting such poor performance.

You need to install OpenGL drivers for your video card. 1 FPS means, most likely, you are using Windows' default software renderer because you do not have OpenGL drivers installed.

Your config.cfg is messed up. No amount of reinstalling will fix that because it is never changed when you reinstall. I have no idea where it is located on a mac, but if you find it. Delete it and a new one that works will be generated for you.

When you say 'i've deleted' the game, it sounds like you aren't actually getting all of the files for your application. Mac is just like PC in that it stores personal files separately. Try looking in `username/Library/Application Support/sauerbraten
When 'deleting' applications on a Mac, it is wise to use a program such as AppDelete which will automatically find and remove ALL of the files associated with the app, including Application Support. Also, don't forget to repair permissions with disk utility once in a while if you are installing and deleting anything repeatedly.
I don't recommend using AppDelete for sauerbraten, because you want to keep those separate files, such as autoexec.cfg, if you plan to reinstall. If you get weird glitches, deleting config.cfg is most often the solution.

Ah - I just tried to give the same answer in that extra thread about this issue .. so much for double posting - but the upside is I finally found a concrete reference to the location of the personal home-dir on Mac - so far I only heard you're able to access it via the Launcher-App's menu somehow. Thanks mayhem!

After installing new drivers for my vido card (An Nvidia GeForce4 MX440), im getting grpahical issues. Many textures are missing, with just the skybox showing through. Im using OpenGL drivers (1.5), so i have no idea why this isnt working. Anyone have any idea how to fix it (in layman's terms)? Thanks in advance

I think so too. I honestly can't stand the grasswedge method... :s
I have however noticed that it performs alot better. Perhaps have both formats (the new and the old) in with a "grassformat 1/0" cvar?
