#11647: Change the 'Find Server' Menu |

So (as people probably know) when you click multiplayer then click 'find servers' a list of servers come up. How could I get rid of these servers and stop them coming up.
I still want to keep the multiplayer ability to find servers though. I just want my game to have its own server list if you get what I mean.
I know what I just said is a bit confusing but I hope you get the gist.

Hi everybody.
i was wondering if it was possible to convert a demo file to another version.
The problem is that each time i dowload a demo from the PSL and i try to load it,a message appears in the console:
demo \" name of the demo \" requires an older (or newer) version of sauerbraten.
Also, i wish to see my demos with the new character (snoutX10k).
So ..can you help me please ?

you would need to use another (read: your own) masterserver.

this is not possible, the version is an indicator of the used protocol - since changes in it will make the demo-stream unusable for any other version of cube2/sauerbraten .. you will need to use the exact same version of the game the demo was recorded with.
Replacing the player model with whatever you want in that version is no problem though ... but you won't be getting the ragdoll effects or stuff like that from the older version ... again - of course.

Yes, so long as you have proper OpenGL drivers installed.

I'm making a Sauer masterserver in Python, and have it responding to "retrieve.do?item=list" and "register.do?action=add" fine, but I was wondering, how would you check to see if the IP given has a Sauer server running? Is it a Sauer-server-specific thing?

The master server for sauerbraten doesn't check if the the ip pinging it has a server running or not. You don't really need to because how often will people be pinging register.do?action=add ?
If you really wanted to, its possible to ping a server and it should give you information like description, players, map name... everything that you see in the server list.

I thought the masterserver pinged the registering servers because it'll tell you when your server does not respond to ping.
Oh well, if it doesn't, that that means I'm done :)

Clear and edit your "servers.cfg" and then simply don't update from the master server. Once upon a midnight dreary we did not have such things as master servers, and Cube stays true to its roots :P

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me why the Sauerbraten engine runs so fast and the C4 engine is so slow? From what I can see the C4 engine has lots more features, but it is so sluggish on my Vista machine and won't run on my XP machine. Sorry I've asked at GameDev, but have got no response.

I think you answered your own question: "the C4 engine has lots more features"

That's not an excuse though is it? C4 is supposed to be a game engine and yet its demos run slowly on a medium machine. I have played AAA games like Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2 on the same computer and they have lots of features, but are not that sluggish. Where as Cube 2 is lightening fast even on a machine that is much older than my current one.

Different priorities, I guess. I won't add features to the Cube 2 engine that won't run well for the majority of people who use it.

The use of "ping" is a bit misleading, indeed.
What the masterserver does do, is attempt to contact the machine on the given IP and sauerbraten infoport to verify it is running a server - if that fails the known error is given, else the IP is added to the list.
The adresses are also re-polled after an hour to keep the list size down and the addresses as up-to-date as possible.
The official masterserver (AFAIK) is a java servlet and it's precise workings remain somewhat of a mystery .. but the hungerburg perl script does what I've described and the black-box behaviour we see from the official masterserver doesn't contradict me either .. again AFAIK ;-)

That's a good philosophy to have. It has worked extremely well for Blizzard.

#11664: Performance Issues |

I know there are probably hundreds of threads like this, but lots of them have replies in jargon i dont understand.
Basically, my computer has a 2.66 ghz processor and 768 mb of RAM. I know this isnt the highest spec PC in the world, but surely it should run freeware like this easily, when i can run games like Dawn of War? But no, i get a horrendous 1 frame per second. This, as you know is unplayable. Does anyone have any idea as to a solution they could give, in layman's terms, or at least a step by step guide, because i dont see why im getting such poor performance.

You need to install OpenGL drivers for your video card. 1 FPS means, most likely, you are using Windows' default software renderer because you do not have OpenGL drivers installed.
